When I was this man's

When I was this man's daughter's age, I refused to participate in the pledge as well. It had nothing to do with my parents-they were democrats. I just knew I wasn't going to pledge allegiance to any flag. I never found it self-defeating, although I would get looks and stares from both kids and teachers, and I'm sure opinions and thoughts of me were developed which in turn affected who was willing to be my friend. Not doing something you don't believe in isn't useless. As long as his daughter is doing it of her own volition, I think it's great.
