Many European Jews who emigrated to Israel early on

changed their names to something more Hebrew sounding. In fact, it was even required for some, such as members of the strike force of the Haganah. According to Miko Peled: "It was part of the national Zionist mission to bring about a new Hebrew identity." Keeping European Jewish names "characterized Jews in exile", which would not help give credence to the myth.
