I don't really know what to say, except, don't try that again, please!
I have never dealt with long-term depression, so I don't really have any advice for that. But for short term depression, there are three rules I try to follow:

1) Get out of the house and go be with people. If you have no friends, go make some. Join a meetup. If you are shy and introverted, go sign up for an improv class. Nothing will cure introversion as quickly as improv.

2) Change something, anything, about your daily routine. Walk a different route, shop at a different store, wear different clothes. Any change is good.

3) Run. If nothing else helps, go outside and just run. Keep running. Run till you puke. Running changes something in your brain chemistry that gets rid of depression, at least temporarily.
