We had the same question,

as we are low income, but we bought land in Wyoming, and built as we could afford it. It was a sacrifice, as we had to live primitively for a while, but now we are comfortable, although live very conservatively, heating with wood, and cooking with wood, and have solar panels for some electricity. Our taxes on our gorgeous 37 plus acres and two homes are only 628 dollars a year. We actually manage on less than 20,000 a year income.
