Your last sentence says it all.

There is a difference between life in the womb as of the moment of conception and a full-fledged human being breathing on its own outside of the mother. There is *no question* whether the latter is due all of the rights we believe human beings are endowed with. There is a question, however, as to a just-formed fetus, why the country is divided.

Something quite miraculous happens from one stage to the other that makes a salient difference, at least in the eyes of half the country. *When* that occurs is not clear & something no one can say definitively. It must, therefore, be left to the individual to decide.

To me, a major irony is that the abortion movement is largely influenced by the Catholic church - which would like to outlaw abortion for all (legislate for all citizens based on its own moral beliefs) vs. being able to persuade even its own. Maybe there is more recent information, but it's my understanding that Catholics are more likely to have an abortion that Protestants.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
