it is the actual (proper?) role of the state to take jurisdiction over justice, rather than allow feuds and revenge to be the standard of justice. That's one of the earliest functions states provided, and can be viewed as a service. The cost of feuds is high, so by imposing a monopoly on force or justice, it removes the cost of feudal / vengeance justice.

You and I are both in favor of a monopoly court making the final decision. Our disagreement is over how the court should make that decision: i.e. what the law should be.

My position is that the victim of a crime, who takes revenge on the criminal, should be able to plead justification - just as you would if you killed somebody in self-defense.
