Actually, what you wrote was pretty good. But when you make a claim that he doesn't owe you anything and you are an American, it kind of leaves the impression that their assumption is acceptable, even though toward the end you really denied it. It would have been better to exclude the first part and just send them the last part, denying their ownership of the land.
