they can see the address where the coins were original sent but after that it will be up to the student whether they make those private or not.
if the students want to make them private all they do is run the btc through a tumbler/mixing service like coinjoin or darkwallet and into a new anonymous address.
if they want to make them transparent they can label their original btc address like daily paul did. even then it will be hard to track because 99% of address they will be sending to won't be labeled. in the future more companies will be labeling their btc addresses for transparency which is a good thing.

if you use a tumbling service btc is as anonymous as cash but can't be stolen without a password or multiple passwords.
