While I am in total favor of separation of church and state (and a completely secular government) and don't like seeing people talking to any invisible man in the sky at government meetings, there is something to be said for the argument that the 1st Amendment only prohibits government from passing a law establishing a state religion and that it doesn't prevent something like prayer at council meeting.
I dislike prayer before a government meeting for the same reason I would dislike a traditional game of Pac-Man before the meeting. It's a waste of time and has nothing to do with the business of running a government.
