Predictable results. In theory, downvoting can be used constructvely, but we know that this is rarely the case. And because of that, people getting downvoted assume the worst. So it's no wonder their behaviour changes for the worst. Other sites have downvoting disabled for this reason.

But all in all, I think other people's efforts towards openmindedness (inluding Nystrom) have mitigated some of the damage. I notice that people on this site have developed a thicker skin against downvoting (which is a good thing) because of that and just openly state their opinion ignoring the downvotes. We need more of that! More discussion, no matter how controversial and ignore those dratted downvotes!
