This is obviously an artificial bubble.

These car companies are trying to keep the price of a car artificially high. They have too much supply but are unwilling to sell at a price the economy is willing to support. Perhaps the demand they had planned for was from an economy artificially puffed up by the lending action of the Fed. and when the bubble burst their production went on as business as usual.
