Yup, Denise. Really.

If someone is merciful only some of the time, but not at other times, then that person is not considered merciful. It's not what I would do if someone broke into my home and wanted to kill me and my family. What would Jesus have done in the same situation? Would He have killed them is the question? I say no. He would have been a hypocrite is He had.
Matthew 5:44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Your example is not correct. "The people that God destroyed" included babies in utero, newborns, and young children all of which were incapable of murder. You believe in the sins of the fathers visiting the sons. I do not.
Exodus 20:5
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
I believe that God is merciful, all of the time. Not just sometimes as we are. I believe that God does not hate, seek revenge, or put babies to death. I believe that God is good, all of the time. We are the ones that are good only some of the time, not God.
