Yes. A book doesn't have time constraints like films do.

Very often books turned into film are disappointing. This one is very satisfying and I think it's because the author was involved in the making of the film and even has a bit part as the Talmud teacher. That says to me Potok gave it his blessing (and he is a Rabbi, after all, so the blessing counts LOL).
