In my personal experience with people I know in my own life none of them wants to even hear about what's going on over there because it's "negative", which I can only assume to translate to "I prefer to ignore bad things and pretend the world is full of rainbows and gumdrops".
I understand the neocon sounding, Christians in name only, that you are talking about, but there are a lot of people out there that understand the real teachings of Jesus Christ (now I am reminded of when a month ago Sarah Palin said that water boarding is how America baptizes). I don't force my belief system on anyone, or try to convert people, if God wants to knock someone off their high horse, that's his prerogative. The only thing that will consistently get me fired up in a religious way is talking about abortion.
When someone comments that religious people don't seem to have a problem with genocide, that's an annoying comment. If I said that agnostics don't seem to care about genocide, that would probably be something you wouldn't agree with. As humans we divide ourselves into groups in so many different ways, but the only divisions that matter are good and evil, and that's it. You don't have to believe in Jesus to be carrying out his instructions just by what you feel in you heart, and many of those who praise his name are carrying out satan's work.
