You said taxes paying for a fire dept are not redistribution since you're getting something for your tax dollars. But let's say that you never have a fire. Your tax dollars would then be paying to put out fires in other people's houses. In other words, you're not getting the benefit. I guess you could argue that you're getting "peace of mind" in the event you do have a fire. But then couldn't he have countered with "you also get 'peace of mind' that, if you ever become poor, you'll have a safety net".
