This is a self inflicted wound

I totally agree with your assessment that this is not about persecution.Christians have attempted to defend the indefensible by claiming that the text in Genesis is a literal depiction of the creation of the universe. The text is an ancient poem that uses prophetic expressions that are found throughout the Prophetic record.Sun,Moon and Stars,Light, Day, Beasts,Birds of the air are all used by the prophets, Jesus and the Apostles. I have preached the gospel for over 30 years and have had to conclude that Genesis 1 as I portrayed it did not hold any water as a literal text. The Hebraic language does not support the word "creation" or Bara as making "something out of nothing." It means to fatten or to to enrich, to form.
That makes more sense since the second verse says that "The earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
Then the process of regeneration took place in verse 3, the first day of creation. The narrative then becomes one of restoration, not not a lack of material.
The question is what was being restored? How about Heaven and Earth. Earth,God's covenant people.
We brought this upon ourselves and cry foul when the world will not agree with our fairy tail of seven days.
