If you don't want to read the whole book, at least read pages 18-30 regarding the occupation, and then annexation of the Hispanic Southwest by Mexico. The migration of Mexicans, legal or otherwise, into the Southwest is part of this process, going on right before your eyes. The Mexican/American war of 1846 is not over yet; the final charge by the Mexicans is just a very slow one. They remember the Alamo too.
