Content Voting FAQ

Hia,

We can now vote on forum topics and comments.

"But what does this do?" I hear you ask:

  • Group consensus has a better chance of being determined.
  • Community Self Moderation: Low voted comments will be minimized after a certain point.
  • Metrics for Ranking: I've added some new views to the sidebar so un-front-paged gems may shine for all to see on the front page, whose algorithms are currently:
    • Top Recent Topics shows the highest voted non-front-paged (non-off) topics posted in the last 3 hours, recalculating every 5 minutes.
    • Top Topics Today (and other timeframes) ranks all topics by vote, for a bigger picture of group preferences. This one will take some time to mature and be useful.
  • Less bumping, better content: Voting is a simple way to dis/approve something instead of populating replies with "bump" etc. I may be going out on a limb with this one, I know.

Try clicking on my below "bad comment" to see if min/maximizing works in your browser.

As usual, open to suggestions.

Something in particular: Scott (down below) doesn't want the voting to be anonymous. What do you say? Cast your votes.

correct. Like I said before

In principle, I'd like to re-implement that function, but DP is different now; it requires a different approach.

Joη's picture

currently not minimizing for anonymous users

that was a big reason for doing this. It should do that.

you were already added to the OP

Didn't See That Thanks Jon..

your thoughts on my main point of an enemy neocon type crew able to hide critical relevant information by the tactics of a bury brigade or do you have that covered?

Joη's picture

So, should replies to minimized comments be similarly shrunken?

can't decide.

Joη,

First, let me say that the changes you are making are really great and I really appreciate them. I know the amount of works it takes believe you me.

I want to offer some ideas to go in tangent with the new thumbs up/down feature.

  • Expand All Comments button/link between a post and its comments.
  • Add a user preference for "minimum thumbs down to collapse" that is editable on the My Account -> Edit screen and use it to display posts.
  • Add a user preference to allow users to answer the question this reply is to.
  • Add the ability to show (like a pop-up screen or something) the users that thumbed up/down posts/comments.

I know the demands for more and more keep coming in and that what I'm asking takes a lot of coding, but I just hope you'll consider these as well.

Thanks again Joη, you rock man!

(I'm getting to it!) I agree.

I actually had all these in my chrome extension from way back.

These all have occurred to me and are on a list. One thing at a time. They wouldn't've been worth making if everyone mass-rejected voting.

Something very problematic is how the site loads, and, while I can keep piling on stuff, I have to take into account how fast each end user's browser is and how much more the server can take. Not everyone uses Chrome, and it's still frighteningly slow on there.

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

I completely understand.

So I'll just say thank you sir!

Joη's picture

alright, I've done 1 & 2

with mostly javascript to minimize server load. It's not instant.

OP updated with instructions.

As for 3, anyone can currently edit their OP and put a comment link in specifying as much, which some do. There is a drupal module for this, but I don't really think it necessary.

As for 4, I'm not seeing too many yea's. Admins can see who's voting for what, and I'd like to defer judgment on this at the moment. I'm assuming this is to combat voting abuse.

Tough call

Often a stinker of a comment breeds great responses. If the comment is eventually voted down, there goes the responses. I don't know.

Nice

Clicking on a comment title also minimizes that comment.

Joη...

Would you set it up so it can be seen who thumbed up/down any given post/comment?

I know it can be done. I would like to know if you will.

I guess since I don't post under an anonymous screen name, then I don't have anything to hide so it's easier for me to talk.

Should it be a Owner, Admin, Mod function?

Secret ballot sort of thing.

I'm not inclined to

but would be swayed if many people thought this a good idea.

I don't know. That treads into making this too much about personalities, which I really do not care to deal with.

Works on Safari on the Mac.

Works on Safari on the Mac. Good addition, thanks.

Cant expand

your "bad comment" by clicking on it. I use opera.

Edit: never mind as soon as I posted this it began to work, but

will there be an expand button in the future instead of just a link?

Anyway great feature overall thanks jon for putting this together!

Joη's picture

was thinking no, you think there should be a button to do that?

I thought "who cares if we can scroll to the top of a comment? Why not just click on the heading to minimize/maximize?"

Now, I notice at the moment comment links don't scroll even if you paste them (due to the #! at end), I can fix that with a little javascript on a page load, but I may be adding too many "little things".

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

just a little [+] or [-] box would be great

Im always hesitant to click on a link i that I don't know where it takes me or what it does. Granted after satisfying that initial hesitant curiosity it's no longer a problem. One then knows it just expands the comment, but for people like me and perhaps newer members a more intuitive expand button like [+] or something may be a better way to go than just clicking the heading. I don't want the little things like this to bog you down though, it's just a suggestion, so if you like or get around to it that would be great. Thanks jon!

obviousness is a good argument

may do.

great job Joη

Joη there is already at least one person who goes on some threads and simply votes down EVERYTHING.
I think it's probably now at least two such people voting down the post + all comments on it!

This is a bad comment. Please vote it down as a demo.

Works on

Opera.

But, what happens if we vote it back up again?

then it is by default un-minimized
