How do I create a post?

By clicking on "Create Content" on the top right column, filling in the fields, and pressing save. If you have the fixed top blue bar enabled, there is also a ✚Post link on the far right that does the same.

How do I edit a post I created?

By going to the post's page and clicking the "Edit" tab above the title. If you find you can't, see here.

How do I add a comment to a post?

By clicking Add a Comment and filling in the fields, then pressing save.

What's the best way to link something?
Good question! In most cases, you can just paste the URL (beginning with "http://..." and the site will automatically turn it into a link.

There's also an explanation here of the HTML elements available to you, linked each time you create content. If you're someone who needs practice with this kind of thing, check out the w3schools' page & sandbox for the <a> tag.

But what is a link? You write an HTML link like this:

<a href="">link text</a>

and it becomes:

link text

If you're writing something in the Daily Paul linking to something else in the Daily Paul, you can use relative URLs, which don't need the protocol or domain (everything from http to the .com), since it's the same in both. So the href="URL"

can be reduced to

or, because the title-in-the-url is optional, even

or since this one has a special name,

and still work.

To link to a comment, the URL needs an extra identifier so the browser can scroll the correct comment to the top of your browser. That extra identifier is added to the end of the page URL and looks like:

Which can be found at the end of the URL linked in each comment title. Technically, this "comment-123456" is the ID attribute of an HTML element in the same location as the comment, that's how your browser knows the scroll target. All users may add IDs to their elements to allow this kind of scrolling. It would look like this:

<b id="identifierText">As I was saying</b>...

And I would use "#identifierText" at the end of the URL/href to link & scroll right to it.

How do I embed images, videos, etc?

Like links, images have an HTML syntax that's quite simple:

<img src="url" />

Where "url" is the address of the image online.
Note this:
is not the URL address of that image online, but a URL for a webpage with the image. Drag it into its own tab, or right-click and tell your browser to open the image in a new tab, you get this:
↑ That is the URL of the image. Note the URL ends in a common image format extension: "jpg". (or gif, png, bmp, etc)

If you don't know where to upload your media online so you can link it in your post, see here.

Any video widget that provides an iframe code should work, as well.

I'll just play it safe and always break the links in my posts so the site doesn't auto-link them.
No! Stop that! That's really annoying. This began because some people think some organizations—particularly ones that poll—think referral traffic (which is visible whenever you click on a link in site A to site B) from the Daily Paul is spam, when it clearly is not. If they're this petty, they're going to skew a poll no matter whose traffic puts RP in the lead, so there's no point in crippling your post just for a poll.

Particularly because then people who never make the "it's only for polls" connection start breaking their links for everything, and the annoyance spreads.

Lastly, it promotes site credibility when others see high traffic coming from here.

My post isn't appearing on the Top Recent Topics!
Then read the FAQ linked there to figure out why.

Why isn't my post appearing in the Active Forum Topics block on the right?
The AFT is sorted by most recent post, then descending by most recent comment. So in order for your post to appear there, you must _______.

How can I talk to the moderators?
There's a suggestion box.

I posted the same thing in forums X, Y, and Z, and why is it only in Z now?
Unlike other sites, we do not encourage cross-forum posting, as it divides conversation on the subject. If you want a vibrant conversation from the community, only post it in one place.

A page now says "403 Access Denied". What's up with that?
If the URL is just /numbers/title-with-dashes-instead-of-spaces, then the post has been unpublished, most likely accurately by our spam filter, perhaps erroneously by the spam filter, by a mod for some good reason, or because you're trying to edit your post once the video(s) have been embedded by a mod (which makes it read-only for non-mods for security reasons), or you're trying to edit a comment that has already been replied to, and is thus unchangeable.

If the URL is /user/numbers, then that user has been banned for not complying with the site guidelines.

Why does this post now say "Page Not Found"?
That post has been deleted, either by the author or a mod, most often because it was a duplicate post.

My comment isn't showing up. It's not particularly spammy, indecent, or inflammatory, so I'm bewildered. What can I do?
It was probably picked up by the spam filter. You may have aggravated it by posting the same link in several, different, unrelated threads. Please don't do that. If it's your pet project, that's what the signature line is for.

If you're certain there's absolutely no good reason for your post to be picked up as spam, you can provide the mods with a link to the missing comment to deal with it.

Probably not. Mods can't delete comments. Whatever they do leaves a trail for the admins to make sure nothing petty is going on. See above.

Now, if you said something exceptionally unbecoming of the gentlemanly manner sought at this site, or gave needless fodder to news media outlets wont to skew opinions, then yes, it may have been unpublished.

The comment section is too colorful/bland. What can I do about it?
Why, you can toggle the colorized comments option. It's colored based on author age and the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Purple's the oldest, red's the youngest, and all the colors of the rainbow are in between. As new users sign up over time, everyone else becomes closer to purple.

Everyone can toggle the "colorize comments" block option on or off at My Account > Edit, under Block Configuration. Or here.

How can I see the newest posts created by specific people of my choosing?
Why, that's what friends are for! Go to their user profiles, friend them, (there's a link toward the top of the page) and their newest content should appear in the Friend Content block on your user profile, next to your content.

Since I live under a rock and never use social media, how can I turn off the social network links?
You can turn off the Social Links block in your user account.

What browser should I use?
Technically you can use any browser to view the site, but one that conforms with web standards is a colossal plus.

Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari would do just fine. You are discouraged from using Internet Explorer (on any website, ever) for your own safety (and sanity).

Why can't I just link to the front page of another site when I want to link to a specific story?
Because that link will be useless within hours, as the second that site's front page changes, your post will make no sense.

Please post the link that goes to the story known as the permalink because it won't change, not the site's front page, as that link will be useless within hours.

For example, if you want to link to a specific story, this is what a useless front page link looks like:
This is a proper permalink:

You get usually get the permalink in your address bar to copy by clicking on the title of the article to load it as the primary content of the page.

How do I turn off those blinking chat boxes? I don't want to chat!
There's an optional chat block. More info on chat here.

Why can't I edit my post?
Once mods embed regular media, you cannot edit it, only they can.

I'm going to tell everyone to click on the ads of our political opponents!
Do not engage in or advocate click fraud. Google has been known to permanently terminate accounts if it detects this.

Why does my post say "unpublished"?
It was either a duplicate post, which is frowned upon, or more likely it has been caught by the spam filter, most likely erroneously. Leave a message in the mod box with a link to your unpublished post to republish it.

How do I become a blogger?
Blog posts are typically longer, more intellectual reads of original content from people who are published in some fashion, or write with notable professionalism.

Send an email to the site owner, giving your history of past publications, with links, your area of expertise, and possibly a "demo" blog piece linked on the DP. Add "Blog Writer Request" to the subject line.

Where can I suggest a new Helpful Tag?
See here.

How do I email another user?
If that user has their contact form activated (for example, yours is here), you may contact them directly by accessing their account's contact tab. Since mine is activated, you can see it on my account top right here.

I can't stand person X. How do I block his content from appearing on my sidebar & in the comments?
(This being the opposite feature of friend content) Add them to your block list. Click the "block user" link on the offending user's profile page. They will be added to your block list, and sidebar content & comments by them will be hidden.

How do I alert DPers in my state of important political goings on they need to attend?
By commenting in that state's sticky thread. You can find it atop the respective state page linked in the map, which should have in its title [Nebraska] State Sticky, [Ohio] State Sticky, etc.

If you don't see one, then you may create one and steward it appropriately if you change your username to your real name, notify the mods of the appropriately titled post to be a state sticky, and it is stickied. It would help to be responsive to comments on your new thread as is necessary.

This approach is modeled after the emergently successful metals thread, though a more succinct OP may help.

My "recent reception" score has recently risen/dropped. Why?

Your profile's recent reception score is an average of others' votes on your content (posts and comments) recently. If your score is very far from zero, doing nothing over time will return it to zero. Even doing regular things frequently may still return this number to zero, but since nobody's consistently amazing, don't worry about it; just be you. However, if this number is consistently negative, you might want to reconsider how you approach topics.

Neither should we sacrifice Liberty for Safety nor Integrity for Concessions. True Liberty can not exist in the absence of integrity. Liberty gained through compromise is but a temporary illusion.

I'll just play it safe and always break the links in my posts so the site doesn't auto-link them.
No! Stop that! That's really annoying. This began because some people think some organizations think referral traffic (which is visible whenever you click on a link in site A to site B) from the Daily Paul is spam, when it clearly is not.

It's not that we think it is spam, it's just as website operators ourselves (some of us) we know that the referrer IS tracked. Google Analytics produces a nice little graph for me that shows me where traffic originates and to which pages those clicks visit, how long they stay on the page and what (if any) other pages on my site they visit.

Seeing this, it's not hard to rationalize a person creating a script that would cross-reference the referrer's with votes on a poll, subsequently removing the votes of those persons to the poll -- thus diminishing Dr. Paul's credibility.

It's not that we think referral traffic is spam, we just don't want our poll votes invalidated because the visited website thinks that 'Paulites are spammers'.

We don't wear tin-hats. This is behavior that was witnessed in the last election cycle and is behavior that will surely be lived through again.

If they would do that

If they would do that, what makes you think they wouldn't do the same for any RP vote. Why only purge the votes originating fro DP?

Just as the guy from AZ made clear, it is any positive RP info he will block, it doesn't matter where it comes from.
