Obama recalls Apollo 11 splashdown in Hawaii – while he lived in Indonesia
Submitted by StaxBrix on Fri, 07/24/2009 - 13:57
On this week’s 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, President Obama praised the pioneering American astronauts and recalled his own childhood memories in Hawaii of NASA capsules splashing down in the Pacific.
But Houston, we have a problem. The president actually lived in Indonesia in 1969.
Obama met with Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin in the Oval Office July 20 to commemorate the historic landing.
He praised the men for their “heroism, calm under pressure” and “grace.”
“I think that all of us recall the moment in which mankind finally was untethered from this planet and was able to explore the stars; the moment in which we had one of our own step on the moon and leave that imprint that is there to this day,” the president said.
During his speech with the Apollo 11 crew, Obama told the astronauts:
The country continues to draw inspiration from what you’ve done. I should note, just personally, I grew up in Hawaii, as many of you know, and I still recall sitting on my grandfather’s shoulders when those capsules would land in the middle of the Pacific and they’d get brought back and we’d go out and we’d pretend like they could see us as we were waving at folks coming home. And I remember waving American flags and my grandfather telling me that the Apollo mission was an example of how Americans can do anything they put their minds to.

Apollo 8 was far more daring and impressive
Obama: "in which mankind finally was untethered from this planet and was able to explore the stars...."
For those that have forgotten, it was the crew of Apollo 8 that took the real risks. They were the first to leave the earth's orbit, enter the moon's and return home safely. They arrived at the moon on Christmas Eve 1968 and during the last orbit of the moon they read from the book of Genesis.
And they did all of this without the additional lunar module for landing on the moon. If something went wrong with the command module they had no backup (which came in very handy with the Apollo 13 mission).
Lovell, Anders, Boorman. Totally amazing moment in time.
I echo your admiration for
I echo your admiration for Apollo 8. Anyone who missed it should consider watching Ron Howard's "In The Shadow Of The Moon".

Splashdown?
This one is incredibly funny! This is supposed to be the frogmen to rescue the Apollo men. Look at the fake “kite string” that is on top the the module. This is supposed to be the string that held the parachutes that brought the module to earth. I would think it would require heavy ropes for such a task. By the way, if this is same space module that brought the astronauts home then where is the area that they docked and climbed into the Lunar Module? Was it the same place? It had to be….but they also had to have the parachutes in the same place. So where are the parachutes in this photo? How was there room to get through the opening into the lunar module with the parachutes stored there? Also, look at the fake breathing respirators on their mouths so they wouldn’t spread “Moon germs” to the frog men. Okay, what about the “moon germs” that are inside the module? what about the “moon germs” on their body? Are those moon germs less threatening than what they might breathe out? Maybe since NASA can’t tell us how the Apollo men went to the bathroom for two weeks, We are thinking the frog men should have the gas masks on for any nasty stuff the Apollo men might have brought back! By the way, the “Apollo men” are on the rafts and have been for at least 10 minutes, what is the “frog man” still doing swimming in the ocean? Looking for the great white shark ? Or is he looking for a carp to eat tonight? Come on..AMERICA! Think about the B.S. these pictures are telling you!!

Obama and Apollo
There seems to be some confusion here. President Obama was commemorating Apollo 11, but he never mentioned watching Apollo 11 splashdown. Notice he says "those capsules", plural. Obama was living in Indonesia in 1969, but he was back in Hawaii in time to see Apollo 16, Apollo 17, and possibly Apollo 15 (I'm not sure when during 1971 he returned to Hawaii). Also, the "kite string" as you call it has nothing to do with Apollo's parachutes; that is related to the floatation collar attached by the Navy frogmen. Incidently, the picture you provide is of Apollo 14. Here is a diagram of Apollo's Earth Landing System:

Notice the parachutes are to the sides of the docking tunnel. Moon germs? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the frogmen wearing respirators, too? As far as going to the bathroom, you could find out everything about Apollo if you wanted to, but you don't. It's easier to believe that something is fake than to admit you just can't fathom how it was done.
Jefferson: read your post. You have been busy. Read this stuff.
The atmosphere in the space capsule was 100% oxygen. Is that correct?
Then read this.
Now what would happen if you breathed 100 percent oxygen? In guinea pigs exposed to 100 percent oxygen at normal air pressure for 48 hours, fluid accumulates in the lungs and the epithelial cells lining the alveoli. In addition, the pulmonary capillaries get damaged. A highly reactive form of the oxygen molecule, called the oxygen free radical, which destroys proteins and membranes in the epithelial cells, probably causes this damage. In humans breathing 100 percent oxygen at normal pressure, here's what happens:
* Fluid accumulates in the lungs.
* Gas flow across the alveoli slows down, meaning that the person has to breathe more to get enough oxygen.
* Chest pains occur during deep breathing.
* The total volume of exchangeable air in the lung decreases by 17 percent.
* Mucus plugs local areas of collapsed alveoli -- a condition called atelectasis. The oxygen trapped in the plugged alveoli gets absorbed into the blood, no gas is left to keep the plugged alveoli inflated, and they collapse. Mucus plugs are normal, but they are cleared by coughing. If alveoli become plugged while breathing air, the nitrogen trapped in the alveoli keeps them inflated.
The astronauts in the Gemini and Apollo programs breathed 100 percent oxygen at reduced pressure for up to two weeks with no problems. In contrast, when 100 percent oxygen is breathed under high pressure (more than four times that of atmospheric pressure), acute oxygen poisoning can occur with these symptoms:
* Nausea
* Dizziness
* Muscle twitches
* Blurred vision
* Seizures/convulsions
Also there is volume of oxygen issue.
How much oxygen does a person consume in a day?
"How much oxygen does a person consume in a day?."
The average adult at rest inhales and exhales something like 7 or 8 liters (about one-fourth of a cubic foot) of air per minute. That totals something like 11,000 liters of air (388 cubic feet) in a day.
The air that is inhaled is about 20-percent oxygen, and the air that is exhaled is about 15-percent oxygen, so about 5-percent of the volume of air is consumed in each breath and converted to carbon dioxide. Therefore, a human being uses about 550 liters of pure oxygen (19 cubic feet) per day.
A person who is exercising obviously uses a lot more oxygen than that. You could determine how much air is moving through your lungs by exhaling into a plastic bag of known volume at each breath and seeing how long it takes to fill the bag.
Three men with two of them breathing heavily. That is a lot of oxygen.

Hmmm.
I am going to confer with a Doctor friend of mine, that does hyperbaric oxygen treatments. I am pretty sure that it is NOT pure oxygen that they pump into those chambers to treat patients. I am sure i have seen large cannisters of different gasses that they mix in..

Scuba Instructor/EMT Checking in
No it is not pure 02 in the chamber it is normal air. In Hyperbaric chamber treatments patients are administered pure 02 treatments with periodic breaks to breath normal air (roughly 20.95% 02, 78.08% Nitrogen and a few minor traces of other inert gasses).

I lived in Hawaii at the time
I went to shcool with Obama and I read the transcript of what he said and for the first time ever I actually am siding with the messiah on this one. He probably meant to say Apollo 11 but he didn't.
All of the launches and recoverys were like an amalgamated memory blured together for me.
It is sad but litterally this is what would happen every 6 months living in Honolulu at that time for me...
Me: Dad, my show is not on TV.
My Dad: We are going to watch this Apollo Launch instead.
Me; I am going to go outside this is stupid.
6 days later...
Me: Do I have to go to Grandmas and watch the Hornet come in again with those guys on it waving as it passes .25 mile in front of her 10 floor balcony such that I can see them waving clearly with binoculars.
Dad: Yes
Me That sucks - I am going to her pool instead.
It was like we took it for granted - it happened every few months.

Is anything in his biography actually true?
