Really enjoyed the tour. The tour guide said that if you took every scrap of pure gold, that was ever mined/discovered, (in the history of the world) and melted it down, it would only make a 65' x 65' x 65' cube. Made me think that this stuff was rather precious!
You people still liking gold?

What mine were you at? Hidee
What mine were you at?
Hidee Gold Mine in Colorado has a gold/pyrite vein that they allow guests to chisels away at and take home samples.

Empire Mine in Grass Valley, CA
It was the most productive gold mine in CA. If you collected all of the gold this mine produced, it would fill a 7' x 7' x 7' cube. Amazing that such small amounts of gold was taken out of 400+ miles of shafts over nearly a century of digging. 80% of the gold is still down there. Hoover crushed the gold mines when he fixed the price of gold at $35/oz. They couldn't afford the workers after that.
I've visited many old mines and it amazes me,,
,,,how all this earth/rock was moved before the days of huge machinery.
Another thing that amazes me is, if unemployment is so high, why aren't more able bodied unemployed people combing the hills of the west searching for free wealth. Gold is about $950 per ounce, that means if only about 1/20th of an ounce is worth close to $50, couldn't an industrious person gather enough to buy some desperately needed essentials?
And there's always the possibility of finding a large $1,000 nugget.
Gold is real wealth !

Mines are Beautiful Things!
Which one were you at? Was it a large open pit mine or a placer or lode with tunnels and drifts? I also love taking tours and playing with all the wonderful toys. Hope you had lots of fun!
Empire Mine in Grass Valley, CA
Over 5.8 million ounces taken out of there. The main shaft goes down over 11,000 feet vertically, and there are over 400 miles of shafts coming off of it. Incredible stuff.
Used to live there.
Had heard the name but was not interested in gold or history back then, but that IS an amazing handful of stats. Thanks!

We used to live there, too
Moved from there about 3 years ago....visited the Empire Mine many times. Always interested in history, mining, The 49ers and seem to be following many of the footsteps of Mark Twain. It's a wonderful site..the Empre Mine. Where we are now, our property was a part of a placer claim and we do fine copper and turquoise remnants around...feel like doing some digging nowadays!

by 65 foot by 65 foot of it that is for sure. I am sure The Fed owns a big chunk of that. I think gold is a keeper!!!!

I love it!
Prefer silver though, since my family owns an operating mine. Come on corrections!
Are you hiring?
