Today's victims: Mike Thompson D-CA1, Dennis Cardoza D-CA18, Jim Costa D-CA20, and Joe Baca D-CA43. All 4 of these congressmen are Blue Dog Democrats. I figured we would focus on the Blue Dogs, as they might be the most likely holdouts to cosponsor.

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act. I appreciate hearing your views on this important issue.
In light of the extraordinary, unprecedented measures the Federal Reserve has been forced to take to prevent our economic downturn from worsening, my colleagues and I have become increasingly concerned about the need for additional oversight, transparency, and disclosure of the Fed's emergency programs. As a result, S.896, the "Helping Families Save Their Homes Act of 2009," which was recently signed into law, specifically included a provision allowing the Government Accountability Office to audit the Federal Reserve's emergency activities.
The House Committee on Financial Services is currently considering a number of other proposals, such as H.R. 1207, to further increase oversight and transparency of the Federal Reserve. H.R. 1207, introduced by Representative Ron Paul (R-TX), directs the Comptroller General to complete, before the end of 2010, an audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and of the Federal Reserve banks.
I have long advocated for increased government oversight and accountability. Please be assured that I will closely monitor the Federal Reserve's actions and will keep your views in mind as debate on this important issue continues in the 111th Congress.

federal reserve legislation
Cosponsoring a bill is easy and accomplishes nothing. If the bill i assigned to a committe whose chairman does not want to set it for a hearing, then it will not advance without regard to the number of co-sponsors. The only way the bill can come to the floor in those circumstances is for a majority of the members of the House to sign a discharge petition, which will take the bill out of the committee and force it directly onto the floor of the House. The chairman of any powerful committee like House Financial Services is ina position to make any member who signs such a discharge petition to regret it as long as he is in the Congress. Ron Paul knows this, which is why he has never sought to have the bill forced out of committee by this route. He just must continue to hope Barney Frank will set the bill for hearings. He has not yet said he will never do so.

I bet you most of these co-sponsors would not vote for the bill if it came to the floor. They have probably been guaranteed it will not come to the floor. They co-sponsor the bill to get us to stop blowing up their phone, email, fax, etc.

It is a safe position. Also, wouldn't 282 congressmembers that actually cared be able to put some pressure on the leadership? Most bills have fewer than 20 co-sponsors and still see the light of day or at least discuss it in committee.
