Quiltingsando's Chicken Coop. Man, those chickens are going to live in style!

Quiltingsando sent me this picture of the chicken coop she built in her garage, along with the liberty symbol that she designed.

Like I said, those chickens are going to live in style.

Thanks. I have those yippie
Thanks. I have those yippie dog neighbors too. You don't need a rooster to get eggs from the hens right?
You need a
rooster if you want baby chicks but NOT to have eggs. The only time the hens make noise is when laying eggs and wouldn't you get a little noisy laying an egg? LOL
We started in May...
We got 12 laying hens in May and have had nearly a dozen eggs a day ever since. I highly recommend www.backyardchickens.com to ask and answer your many questions. Raising chickens is fun.
And since somebody will probably think of it, I am not a troll trying to plug that web site. I am a DP fan who is as concerned about the future of our country and our food as the rest of you. ;)
Newbie question about chickens
Is it easier to raise hens in more residential areas because they don't crow like the roosters? I've been thinking for a while about building a coup. My only concern was the noise. The hens won't be cock-a-doodle dooing in the moring right?
hens don't cock-a-doodle-do
We thought we had ordered all female baby chicks from MyPetChicken.com but we ended up with one male and YES Henry (formerly Henrietta) cock-a-doodle-dos all over the place in the morning. We live in a residential area and my neighbors with the yippie dog are just going to have to live with it. However, we have decided to move the coop farther away from our bedroom window. :-)
My smile for the day!
Bump!
bump for birds*))
*))...Thank you for bringing a big smile to my face every time I see this pic.

quiltingsando... this is so
quiltingsando... this is so fun. i have only had one chicken, a rhode island red and that was years ago, we had to keep her in the laundry room until she got her feathers. she use to watch television in the den upstairs with my daughter, she gave us an egg a day and was always quite pleased with herself. she would follow my husband down the street always sticking close by. she was a real character. my neighbor and i plan to go into a nearby town and look into getting some chicks this weekend. i hope you have as much fun as we had in your new venture and by the looks of your new hen house, i am sure you will. best of luck...
quiltingsando, you are too funny!
The artificial flowers in the window box are blowing my mind!
Please look into raising buckeye chickens - they may be an interesting player in "The Great Chicken Coop" (the "p" is silent.)
If the day comes that they wish to kill or confiscate chickens, what will they do about endangered species, like the Buckeye? Plus, you sell the eggs for $3.50 EACH.
Big hugs!
Oh, I will
have to google that. They sound interesting. I got those flowers at the dollar store. LOL I wanted to add a bit of color. I think I will have to take them out because I am afraid the chickens will try and eat them. LOL
Plant marigolds in there.
Chickens love them, and they are great for their eggs. :)
I have 4 free range chickens in the backyard.
They are pets, and produce 3 eggs a day.
The kids love chasing them. They crap on my deck and it is difficult to get off. Besides that they just graze all day in the backyard and into the coop at night. One of them is funny and flies up the tree and sleeps there.
My kids named them; brown snow (brown leghorn), white snow(white leghorn), green snow(definitely ugly but lays green eggs), and yellow snow(the youngest who does not lay eggs yet). I told them what yellow snow actually is =) They got a good chuckle out of that one.

We went to the fair
last week and saw all kinds of chickens it was fun. I met a lady who owns some that are older than chicks so she knows if they are boys or girls. We need hens because roosters would get us roasted by the neighbors. LOL
If I can get that coop in the back yard I plan on getting some in a week or so, I hope. It might hold three or four chickens depending on the size I think.
Based on my experience as a
Based on my experience as a youngster some 50 years ago, I'd say you may be in for a lot of not fun. Chickens are stupid, nasty creatures (but tasty).
The family filling station was not keeping us in groceries, so we started a garden and a small chicken operation. We bought 50 sexed chicks for starters, which were supposed to be all hens. One rouge Y chromosome slipped through. My younger brother and I named the young rooster Henry. Henry became our pet, and when he reached crowing age, a dinner.
Soon after we got them, the chicks turned cannibal on each other. They started pecking each others' rear ends without mercy. Someone said it was probably some nutrient deficiency, but changing their feed didn't help. So we wound up with the continuing job of grabbing the little pests, who did not enjoy being grabbed, and smearing their back ends with smelly black tar-like goo.
My mom made shirts for me from the feed sacks. The cloth was actually intended for that purpose. But still, they were not exactly fashionable. I have photos of myself wearing feed sack shirts.
Have fun.

When my wife was a kid
Her family raised Bantam Hens..
In Los Angeles of all places..
They're smaller, and so are the eggs.
You have to be careful though..there are small versions of all breeds and some people call those Bantams..But there is also a variety unto itself..
You might also hear them called Bantees..The eggs are great!

Well, my husband
and I are looking to buy a dog kennel to put around it to keep predators away.
I could spray paint the fence would be nice. I live in a subdivision so I tried to keep it cute and hope the neighbors don't complain. I always wanted to live in the country and it looks like it will never happen, so I decided to bring the country to me. LOL LOL
quilting
we are using a dog fence kennel, be sure and bury chicken wire about a foot under ground all around the kennel, and across the top, to full proff it from critters.

linoleum inside. LOL I thought it would make it easier for clean up. I bought the window box at a garage sale for a $1.00.
Thank goodness. I've seen
Thank goodness.
I've seen commercial chicken coops being flogged on internet green sites that are running in the $250-500 per chicken range. (That's nuts if you're actually raising them for food - fresh eggs and/or meat - rather than as REALLY expensive pets.)
A buck for the window box at a garage sale plus a bit for the rest of the pieces and some labor is much more like it.

Oh, I tried to hold
it down and use stuff I had around the house. I went from the attic to the basement looking for things I could use. I did have to buy some lumber and things. I made the window from some Plexiglas. This would be a awesome project for people who have children. It was very rewarding for me because I wasn't sure I could do it. Now, up close it is not perfect but from here it looks good. LOL LOL
Perfect!

That is the
cutest thing I've ever seen. I really envy crafty people.
.
Very nice!
Chicken shacks have come a long way. The "poulet-chalet" on the link is priceless.
Here is a fantastic
web site that people post pictures of their coops. I got my ideas from there. If I can do this anyone can do this. I still have to get it into the
backyard somehow. LOL I may get some chickens in a couple weeks. I am so excited, if it doesn't work out, at least I tried.

the coop is awfully chic yet i'm wondering - why is it in the garage?

I don't want it to get wet. LOL
No, it was just easier, not so hot for me and all the tools were convenient. I would work on it for an hour or so and then go in the house to cool down and get some water. It seem to take me forever but I got her down. hee,hee
wheres my comment?
?
Like a little doll house
Lucky chickens, I'd better not show this to my chickens, or they will go on strike. :o) Great Job Quilting
