No offense
I have been ridiculed lately for deleting someone's post on a thread. Nothing personal, I assure you. We are all on the same side, working for the greater good. I have had posts deleted myself. It's OK, I do not take offense; nor do I mean to give any.
Ever play basketball and get an elbow in the eye? It's a foul. The game goes on. If it's deliberate, then the ref may throw the player out. In the end, it's only one game and there will be more to come. The eye will, I hope, heal.
I rarely look at the name of the poster, but read what the person has to say. If it contains profanity or a personal attack it gets spiked. Sometimes a worthy comment follows and that too gets swept off. And that is unfortunate because the follow-up comment, or rebuttal is often better than the heading comment. (Or whatever it is called).
I do not know the other moderators at all. Michael and I have been in touch, though not recently; and the same is true with Jane Aitken. (Haven't heard from Jane for a while). I do not know Kevin Tuma, but I think his artwork is wonderful. Other than that, I don't have a clue about the other mods.
It's entirely possible that two moderators are working on a thread at the same time. I don't know. Just a guess.
If you and I were to meet in a coffee shop we would get along just fine. We might not fully agree, but that's OK. Divergent points of view are constructive and often illuminating. We can agree to disagree. In the end, I hope we get on good terms so we can focus on the really important stuff.

From the Tao te Ching: What
From the Tao te Ching:
What is a good man but a bad man's teacher?
What is a bad man but a good man's job?
I prefer to take a different approach to comments that appear to be divisive or inflammatory. The last few days I have engaged in discussion with persons I once believed were posting things just to get me angry. It turns out they were not meaning to be "bad men," just provocative ones, and my choice to seriously debate them turned out to be one of the best things I have done here on the DP. True...yesterday I also succumbed to the temptation to call names, though they were not obscene, so I suppose I am not entirely Lao Tzu's "good man," either.
As I've stated elsewhere, I do respect your work as a moderator, and continue to stand by my assertion that I could never, ever be a mod on the DP. I know it isn't censorship, but even the moderation of free speech is something I would have difficulty with.
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

The R3volution requires action, not observation!!!!
as a moderator, can you try to keep some of the take action threads on the active topics list. This is becoming the daily news, not so much the daily paul anymore. Thanks.
I agree, but I don't know how to do that.
Drop Michael Nystrom a note about posts you think ought to get more, or less, attention.
What is bad is when I get
What is badis when I get spiked for no obvious reason other than someone doesn't agree with the facts & truth presented.
Good people do Good deeds
and are no respecter of person
That wouldn't be me.
Must be some other mod. I don't know who they are or what their tolerance level is.
I don't have time
to really ever go back and check whether one of my posts has been deleted or not, I post all over the web, I write all the time trying to spread the word, there's nothing I can do if someone deletes it for whatever reason but it won't slow me down.
"In the capitalist society there is a place and bread for all. Its ability to expand provides sustenance for every worker. Permanent unemployment is not a feature of free capitalism." - Mises - www.mises.org
No offense but..
Do you ever wonder if people even take you seriously, since you are not even an American?
Sure I am. Born in the USA, live in the USA, have a Blue Passport.
You may have been at one point but you ran off to some island or country thinking you'll be safe, and now you want to armchair quarterback the revolution, and this message board.
It's true I am far away from the mainland, but it's still a U.S. territory. I am no quarterback, just a referee.
I personally think you should live IN the United States, to be qualified to be a mod. You should have to live here with the rest of us, and share the same experiences we do.
I honestly think geography has nothing to do with thought or heart.
I'll give you one thing though, at least you have the guts to put your name on whatever you modified in the forum.
I do that now. It's only fair.

Jefferson, I disagree with your statement of having to be an
American to be a moderator here as our friends across the seas are just as patriotic or even MORE so. Colognepaulist and Freedom1776 are/were great moderators and kept things in good working order while most of us here in the states were sleeping. I wish they'd come back quite frankly.
What are you fightin' for?
Caught in the middle?
Freedom is only for those with the guts to defend it!
Divide and conquer...... good job Jefferson on falling right
into the trap of the elite. Oh yes.... let's limit the discussion of ideas and freedom to only those who live in our zone. Let's form a club.... let's keep ideas out from those who don't look like us....... just great.
The truth is the truth... it is universal. And personal attacks belittle the cause of truth, no matter where one resides.

elviejo...let's look at this from both sides
i think we are all talking censorship here, you me, and jefferson...none of us want to see any kind of censorship in any form (except for the cussing and personal accusations that have no merit whatsoever, of course or, anything detrimental to the philosophy of Dr. Paul)...
in a heated debate arguments will become inflamed, we all know that because we are all passionate "A" type personalities...else, we would not be here...for the most part, i think this is correct for all of us
we can't attack jefferson for his "no offense" views on zenpiper...they are his beliefs and in a free society we all have our own frame of reference...some may agree and some may disagree, perhaps a rebuttal to his stand might have been sufficient...
i am really trying to incorporate this view into my own thoughts and posts, wish me luck as i will need it...thank you
O Captain, My Captain, rise up and hear the bells!
No censorship here
There have been topics about 'did we land on the moon?' that have no relationship to Ron Paul or the Constitution. They stay. Or at least, I don't spike them.
Just the dirty words and the personal attacks. That's it. I use George Carlin's seven words as a guideline. If you can't say it on TV, it shouldn't be said here. That seems fair.
It's really about being reasonably polite and respectful, even if you think the other poster is an idiot.
"Divide and conquer"
wasn't my intention. I just have little respect for those who choose to run, instead of fight. I also don't put much stock in what they say either.
I personally think he has a defeatist attitude, and expresses that frequently, as in the "uprising video".
I am ready to defend and die for the beliefs this country was founded upon. That was a hard decision to make. So I guess that makes me unqualified to have an opinion, about those that aren't?

The Virtue of Cowardice
Sometimes, cutting and running is the best option. The "war" will be extended and harrowing, and many battles will be easy and many more will be long and bloody. Each collection of logistical circumstances will dictate appropriate tactics. Many will fall, fail, and die, others will surrender, and not a few will recognize no advantage to suicide, so that they might fight again another day.

Believe me
I would sometimes love for the lazy, dumbed down, medicated, 6 hour a day TV watching, decadent, materialistic, willfully ignorant, boot licking, nuke the brown people types, to get what they deserve.
I have family here that can't just up and move, and I must be here to defend them.
I can't see cowardice as a virtue.
Someone shared a proverb here the other day. (prov 22:3)
"The prudent man sees the danger and takes refuge, while the simple keep going and suffer for it."
I would love to take refuge. I plan to, here in the states, if there is such a thing.
I do not plan to just run out at first sign of chaos, and start blasting. I will take refuge, and defend myself and family to the death if that's what it comes to. I will not cut and run to somewhere else. I just can't.

Running to where Prof?
The Constitution goes down, where else is there to Run..
Depends
I live in the Northern Marianas Islands, which are U.S. territories. We are the least important part of the U.S. The government is a mix of U.S. and local, so there is some autonomy. Only snag is that the locals are as corrupt as the Corleone family. They wantonly steal money from retirement funds, take money that is supposed to be used to repair roads, and appoint their relatives to high-paying jobs, regardless of qualifications.
We do have the DHS here, also the FBI but their presence is fairly low. So far.
No idea what will happen in the future. My #1 priority is to live safely and peacefully, preferably under the U.S. flag.
i'm with you, jefferson...
i don't want a war but if there must be one let it come now...i am more equipped than my children and infinately more passionate!
O Captain, My Captain, rise up and hear the bells!
I couldn't imagine
having to make that decision with children involved. I respect your bravery. If we don't stand against this monster, who will? The generations before us have certainly dropped the ball. Where does it end?
I have done almost everything in my power to stop this peacefully.
I have thrown tons of money ( not 25 or 50 bucks...thousands), driven hundreds of miles, canvassed, sponsored volunteers, organized volunteers, volunteered, run two local political campaigns, canvassed my ass off for Ron Paul, fliers, DVD's, protests, straw polls, guerrilla advertising, supported micro radio stations, phone work, fax work, and the list goes on, and on. this is on TOP of trying to maintain a living, and paying the bills.
I am not one who takes lightly those who just sit and pontificate on the internet. I am not saying that zenpiper does that, I am talking about some others. I think you know of a couple I am referring to.
I have had to make the decision to lay my life on the line if necessary. It is much easier without children. Would I like to go live in the Caribbean? SURE!!! I love the Cayman Islands. Would I feel better about it? IDK.
I am now looking at the right side of the page at a headline that says 'Revolution is the duty of the people'
Looks interesting.

nice points to consider...
kind of like having your cake and eat it, too...but that is a matter for his on conscious
i'm pretty positive he never identified himself after deleting several of my posts...no worries, though, i'm over it!
we'll see how it all pans out...i return to the daily paul every day because the sum is greater than its parts (and that includes me as well as the island hopping zenpiper)...
contrition on his part is a sign of good faith, i suppose, and i'll take that as a positive...so, no offense taken, zen...
O Captain, My Captain, rise up and hear the bells!
The whole world is ready for a rEVOLution and we have many
on Daily Paul that are living in other countries and cheering us on.
I appreciate the support and efforts of our neighbors. If we succeed----they are more apt to succeed.
I welcome their participation, and that Zenpiper has volunteered time to referee.
I am older and can overlook some bad language (have been known to say sh#* on occasion) but the word that begins with the sixth letter of the alphabet bothers me to hear it over and over--so I think a *deleted for offensive content* replacing the foul language or content would be a good option.
Sometimes we 'speak' with passion on here, and our fingers fly faster than our brains can respond!
You are right
I try to keep a low profile and only stick my head out of the sand when I need to.
With profanity, I can swear with the best of them. But not in here. I wouldn't go so far as to say this is a kind of church, but that you would probably not cuss in front of your pastor.
What I usually do, is just go in and delete the word, if I can. It's an easy fix. I also correct spelling, grammar, capitalization and other little errors. I do my best to make the poster look good.
Not everybody had a good education. I know this because I see "alot" all the time. I go in and change it to "a lot." Easy. I don't want anybody in our community to look like a dummy.
I've moderated a pretty big board
Pretty thankless.
things seem pretty darn fair, and relatively lax here.
As long as people aren't going after each other in a personal way, you guys otherwise let everything through.
Civil and informative.
BTW
thanks..
Thank you, zenpiper!
* Of all the mods here I find you to be the most willing to be transparent and reasonable. You seem to be very tolerant and also have a great sense of humor! I always enjoy your thoughtful posts and that you participate here not just as a moderator but as a member of this community.
I think the suggestion by photoshop below is a great idea and I have also suggested this in the past...but perhaps to the wrong ears!? Many times the bulk of a post is not offensive and the people that take time to research and compose a comment are thoughtful and provide good information. That is why when a whole post gets deleted without an explanation everyone gets offended not just the person that made the offensive remark! It sure would resolve a lot of mystery and anger if just the offending part was edited along with an explanation!

Good idea, but there is no consensus
If you read my reply to photoshopwiz, then I have begun doing it, but just a little.
I don't know about the others, but I have to be respectful of the post. If it's just s*** I can fix it. I use George Carlin's Seven Words You Can't Say On Television as a touchstone.
I used to work at NBC and they were really strict!
Thanks a lot for your kind words,
zp
I don´t think you have to explain everything..
There are posting rules and personally, if I disagreed, I would take it in email convo,,,

a suggestion
~
zen, just so others know what is going on, you can write over the offending remark ... and in it's place put:
deleted due to sexual content ~ Mod
(or profanity or gay bashing, anti-semitism, flaming, etc.)
That way, just the offensive content in a comment is removed, and any responses to the comments are preserved ... voila ... everyone knows exactly what happened.
I did that on my "Schiff, Celente and Me" post
A poster wanted to change the thread to a debate about the Codex. I left his first sentence alone, but deleted the rest. I added, "This post does not belong here. Start a new thread if you like. If you would like to comment about this threat, you are welcome to." Or something like that.
Anyhow, you have made a very fine suggestion. Not to me, but to other mods who are baffled about choosing deletion or a little trimming with a note.
Great idea. I am sending beer to your table.
Salut!
~
Thanks ... I'll have an O'Doul's ;-)
I guarantee, you won't get a complaint ~
~
like ...
HEY, someone needs to restore my sexually offensive remark!
LOL
being a
referee is a tough job...
People love to yell at them and give them hell.. but when they make a good call.. they rarely get the credit they deserve.
Being a mod here must be like being a referee in a rare game that is mixture of football/soccer/rugby/paintball/lazertag/WWF/Boxing/Karate /basketball/ and volleyball.....all mixed up in one big ass game!!
Imagine the stress level of that type of referee??? All they can do ...is their best....
....as you most likely do zen... keep it up!!
It's OK
First, thanks for the kind words.
In the absence of moderators here, there would be craziness, profanity, and a lot more attacks on others. I tip my hat to my colleagues, whoever they are. And to the DP regulars, who continue to inform, enlighten and inspire the rest of us. And of course to Micheal N. who started this universe of patriotic and Constitutional discourse.
