How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the War
by Lewis Grossberger
It’s possible you missed the news because no official announcement was made, but Afghanistan is now our number-one war.
But that’s not the real news: The larger war—Afpakiraq–is never going to end. I’m making that announcement myself, because someone has to. We are now a nation permanently at war, so you may as well get used to it.
(Yes, Orwell prophesied it and Eisenhower warned us that having a huge military-industrial complex would lead to bad things. Fat lot of good that did.)
So far, the longest US war in history is Vietnam, which went eight years and five months. Seven months from now, Afghanistan will pass it. Think it won’t? Anyone want to take Vietnam and the points? Or would you like good odds on it ending in 2015? How about 2030? My money’s on the odds-on favorite…Never.

I often wonder whether or not
reinstating the draft, with NO exceptions, might cause massive anti-war protests in the streets of DC, just like it did during the Vietnam War.
I certainly don't want to go to that extreme, however, I remember well the turmoil over all of it back then. And I was just a child. The images on the TV news made quite an impression on me. It wasn't pretty. And the draft ushered in the realization of the seriousness of it all. It finally did get the average American's attention, because the lives of their own children were finally in danger, being forced by the govt into confronting the enemy close up and in person, on the other side of the world. Possibly resulting in death, dismemberment and a host of mental illnesses. It hit home. Burning draft cards became very popular.
Volunteering for war is one thing, but being forced to go is quite another.
Actually... to expand on my prior comment....
They actually DID learn their lesson in Vietnam. No More Draft.... as it got too many people emotionally invested in the war. Better to have a "voluntary" army, so nobody feels threatened into thinking that the war could affect THEM.
Then..... No More NEWS coverage.... No More PICTURES.... that also killed them in Vietnam. This is why the news media isn't allowed on the battle lines and isn't allowed to send pictures of the coffins home. It is also why they got so irate at the paper the other day that ACTUALLY showed a dying soldier.
The way they are running this war nobody thinks a thing about it. They can keep going perpetually and nobody cares because to most people it isn't REAL.
They are just disgusting. And the lack of moral fortitude on the part of the American people makes me physically ill. A few people are starting to realize that the war is COSTING too much, in these hard economic times.... but VERY few think of it in terms of human life.

Yes, and they'll probably never run out of "volunteers",
Unfortunately. Especially when a "bottom class, climbing out of poverty" young person's only choice is not a good job, or college, but the recruiting office or the welfare office. Wonderful options our economy has provided.
Most will "choose" to go with the recruiter. My heart breaks for young people with no opportunities. I know many.
That's exactly why they don't do it......

FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Per
Great title...
This would be funny if it weren't so true.
