This is a discusting display of technology in the hands of a
society lacking the spiritual maturity for proper use.. A dangerous combination indeed.
Will mankind ever mature enough to realize how easily these tools can be used to enslave them ?
How short sighted these scientists are. Materialists. Success driven stupidity.
I see here a hunger for the
I see here a hunger for the spirit. A desire to leave the constrains and limitations of our bodies behind. Unfortunately inserting ourselves into a virtual world via robotics, genetic software, etc will not accomplish that end. Only Christ conquered death, for the purpose of enabling us to realize what this talk is obviously reaching for.

...The Scientific Dictatorship...
...you are either with the Scientific Dictatorship that will arise from this, or you are extinct...
...according to this, we are now all subhuman, subordinate to this newly declaired Master race of superhumans this will produce...

global scientific trans-humanist agenda
Some of the videos, or portions of some videos, even this one, do appear to promote the global scientific trans-humanist agenda. For me I don't think that is a good thing.
Just like ZG, and ZGA, I think there is some GREAT info here, but it needs to be put into its proper context.
For everyone, read some Bertrand Russell, or Huxley. Check out the UNESCO charter. The sick stuff they have planned is here, and it looks to me like TED is an advocate. Make your own informed decision, but you better be informed first, rather than gutlessly defending positions some dumb movie or video advocated.
I put this as a reply to Rougeliberty, because I think this individual gets it. I hope you will too.

One thing I have read and heard about restring an economy after a bust is there needs to be a wave of innovation. Juan thinks that wave is in the biotech industry. I don't disagree with him in the slightest, especially after seeing his case for it. What I am worried about is after the bust of the biotech industry what is going to be the next wave of innovation to get us out of an economic disaster?
I think one of the major things that Juan misses here is discussing the root cause of economic cycles. If he would only take a look at the Federal Reserve and talk about money creation and monetary policy it would go a long way in his presentation. The fact that he completely omits it is disappointing. He doesn't leave his audience any smarter than when they came in, just more informed about the next bing innovation wave and opportunity for the Fed to create an environment to have malinvestments in ideas that shouldn't be invested in due to cheap money.
At any rate, Fed monetary policy and the effects it has on investment and innovation is a whole other topic. If you'd like a starting point I would suggest reading about the late 90's dot com boom and bust.
TED is great.
TED is great. I listened to three talks tonight. This was my favorite: http://www.ted.com/talks/...
Eye-opening, great information, and a vast amount of info...
compressed into 17 minutes. Plus, this guy knows how to deliver a talk.
Very interesting, especially the heart that began beating!
Ron Paul's Convention Speech
Frankly, I think that's a lie
They can't take a heart out of a person who just died and make it beat again. Human organs must be taken WHILE THE DONOR IS STILL ALIVE. It's the donation that kills him. The disciples of Frankenstein have concocted "brain death" to trick people into thinking that the dying are already dead when they take their organs. NOT SO!
Don't agree to be an organ donor or they'll kill you for 'em ... you're worth more to them as parts than you are as a whole human being.
Would these kinds of people lie about producing a "beating" heart. You bet they would.

However if you believe in evolution, it is possible that we as human beings are not finished evolving.
Or maybe we always evolve and change... I don't know...
IF YOU CAN REASON WITH NATURE YOU WIN
Our universe reacts to us. By way of critical thinking we manipulate variables in our universe that always respond. It is our critical thinking that allow us to choose which path we take, with or without good reason.
Nature can grow exponentially. You are saying that we are still apart of nature although our continued existence is in question due to our consumption and our inability to respond to nature. Forcing artificialities to mold our perception of reality is not our role in the universe.
I say this because the amount of life created by permaculture far exceeds what consolidated artificial systems can create.
and life is the key to nature.

that think they KNOW what happended millions of years ago. Always a little truth mixed with a lot of .
Do you KNOW that the earth revolves around the sun?
No, you don't KNOW that, but the evidence is pretty darn good. Nobody KNOWS what happened millions of years ago, but the evidence is pretty darn good.
Didn't Jesus teach you not to hate?
--------
Fossils Rock!
Actually, as far back as 1889 there was an experiment ...
.... which pretty much proved that the earth does not revolve around the sun (heliocentrism was in vogue at the time thanks to Galileo)... that, according to the experiment, the earth appeared to be stationary and that the other planets revolve around the sun and the whole thing revolves around the earth ... making the earth a pretty special place smack dab in the center of the universe. This is not an easily defensible position for atheists to be in soooo ....
Scientific experiments must be interpreted and the "great minds" simply interpreted the Michelson-Morely experiment to be a "big fat failure," because it not only didn't support their pet paradigm of the universe, it put it on a collision course with reality! Hark! Anything but that! Next, enter the evil genius and all around low life Einstein, who cooked up his theory of relativity according to which there is no discernible center of the universe thus saving the scientific glitterati of the time from having to grovel to the Catholic Church for defending geocentrism as it is plainly stated in the bible several times over.
This experiment was tried several times over the years and always produced the same results ... the earth is standing still. It doesn't spin or revolve. If it did spin (1000 miles an hour) everything at the equator (which would be spinning the fastest) would weight half what the same thing weighs in Nova Scotia due to the unshakable law of centrifugal force. Also, if the earth was hurdling through space at 67,000 mph, what protects our atmosphere from blowing away? Velcro or super glue?
If men truly believed that the earth was the center of the universe, who would fall for the pseudo scientific shtick that the earth is a tiny little insignificant planet on the edge of nowhere .... one of many ... blah, blah, blah ... which evolved from gasses ... where, happily and quite by accident, life happened to spring up from primordial mud. It's the bs story of the century, proved untrue in a thousand and one details if only people would do a little research. But, it sets men free from God and so they cherish their freedom to roast in hell for all eternity rather than have to bend the knee to God.
We've been lied to all our lives by men who want us to be their slaves. There is no evidence WHATSOEVER, that the earth revolves around the sun. What happened millions of years ago? NOTHING! Time had not yet been created by God. (It can be proven ... but you need to do your own research).
you're joking...
...right?
Not in the least!
I've done some mighty hefty extra-curricular research on this topic to get to my conclusions! How did you pick up your beliefs? Did some public school teacher plant them in your head or did you discover them on your own?
These ideas: evolution, a multi-billion year old universe that, according to "experts," created itself, global warming, overpopulation, holes in the ozone, peak oil and any number of other fairy tales are preached by the elites. The same elites have squashed thousands of innovations that might have improved life for all mankind. Why? Because they are gatekeepers who only allow what they can control to get through. Through the printing and doling out of money, they control almost all education and research. Why do you suppose they created the Department of Education which has a verifiable track record of dumbing down the government school inmates.
I'm at the point in my life that I going to say what I know to be true. You'd be wise not to take my word for it, and really wise if you do your own research. I challenge you to prove me wrong.
If you read material pro and con evolution, for instance, I think you'll come to agree that the pro stuff is breathless bull (where they repeat ad nauseam, that evolution is a proven fact, without providing a single fact) while the con is exceedingly solid science proving in hundreds of ways and in many scientific disciplines (geology, astronomy, biology, molecular biology, paleontology, etc), that the theory is holier than Swiss cheese. Today, most evolutionary scientists have been reduced to believing that space aliens "seeded" the earth ... while they won't admit it publicly, they have had to come to the conclusion that evolution is a very leaky boat.
Here's another suggestion. Google, "Demographic Winter," a fairly new video about the coming population implosion once the baby boomers die off. Don't believe you can view the whole video online yet. However, parts of it are there. Alongside it are sad tales about how Europe is dying.
My final advice, question EVERY mantra the mainstream spouts ... it's all lies and damn lies.

for people who know a few things to develop a false sense of knowledge. Hitler made some of the same logical blunders, thinking that paradise could be created by taking control of nature, by improving our genes. However, the system of which we are a part of is designed to the contrary. Paradise is only created when something within us (our hearts) change, but that is difficult so people want to short-circuit this system.
Anyway, a lot of interesting things he said in isolation, but the way he put them together was very foolish.
LOL... how arrogant.
There are too many variables and too much creation for us to "explain". God will never be explained away. God is eternal. He is outside of time because His movement creates the time... sound... energy... mass... and His glory creates the light.

TED is an elitist, globalist organization...and nothing more!
With all due respect Michael, I have been following TED for over 6 years and even signed up as a member. In the beginning, as I viewed their video seminars and read their blog, I was really intrigued by what seemed to me at the time to be visionary and positive information about our world and it's future. I learned about new and emerging technology from the leaders in their fields. I listened in on many talks about social change and emerging world cooperation regarding population, trade, pollution, global warming, world food supplies, diplomacy, etc. I watched both neo-cons and progressives (mostly the latter) prognosticate about their Utopian visions for the planet, in awe and wonder. These included speeches from people such as Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bono, Peter Gabriel, Bill Gates, Steven Jobs and even Billy Graham, among others. I was truly somewhat inspired at times, often wondering naively that maybe, with these seemingly "well-intentioned" people coming together with their pure designs and intentions, maybe the world could be a better place for all in the near future after all. Then...I woke up!
Three years ago, I began to learn more about the world we really live in and who really controls it. As we all know now, it is blatantly evident that a major separation truly does exist between real wealth and control and the servitude that exists to provide it. The true intentions of the corporate elite led by the Rockefeller's, Rothchilds, etc., etc., and their band of parasitic friends, government lackeys, and well-placed, like-minded drones at the CFR and, yes, even some in TED, have methodically and systematically stolen any real chance for Utopia for everyone! Sadly, yet realistically, their vision of Utopia doesn't include most people, especially those who don't share either their version of how it should work or their ruthless ambition to achieve it!
Most fall under the servitude category...and most always will!
Those who do not qualify for membership in the elite clubs, don't qualify for a reason...with intention, and never will! Most may even be expendable as some with the most extreme view would fervantly believe.
That brings me back to TED - this beautiful stew of Utopian idealism is just to good to be true! Although anyone can register on their site, Their annual conferences are only open to a very limited amount of attendees and the price for attendance is in the thousand of dollars. They also screen attendees for relevance and status so therefore, the average person, would never be granted the opportunity to attend. That leaves out just about anyone who just wants to be left alone to lead a quiet, unassuming life, in a quiet neighborhood, raising a nice family, working a steady job until retirement! In other words, the entire middle class, working class and most obviously, the poor! Thank God these people come together here to help steer and manage the direction that all of our less qualified and meager lives will be headed in.
http://conferences.ted.co...
They are interested primarily in movers and shakers or those who "qualify" for attendance. No worries though, we can still sit in live via the internet for a price. $995.00
http://www.ted.com/pages/...
If that is to steep, we can wait and watch the clips they post on the TED blog and learn their managed and guided vision for a world they believe we all should live in, all without any direct and meaningful feedback from those watching who might have a different view! TED is at it's heart, an extreme globalist organization...period!
Although I still look in from time to time to learn what the latest direction technology, science, communications, politics, and other sectors are headed in, I do it for understanding only...my level of trust, however, has sadly been contaminated and compromised in lieu of the myriad or earth-shaking events that have occurred both here and abroad recently!
My view now, for what it's worth, is this:
Beware of TED's bright light...it could be blinding!
"Whenever I despair, I remember that the way of truth and love has always won. There may be tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they may seem invincible, but in the end, they always fail. Think of it: always"
Gandhi
TED is a celebration of freedom
Interesting points.
Some people appear to misunderstand why I posted this video. It is not because I agree with everything in it, or because I think TED is great. It is because the content of the video is interesting and offers another perspective on the situation we face.
I'd much rather end war than learn to grow ears for soldiers who've had them shot off.
In response to your criticisms about TED, however, I would point out that the people gathered together at the conference are celebrating their freedom.
For example, you say,
Let me remind you that the basis of individual freedom and liberty is the right of individuals to:
1) Freely and voluntarily associate with others how they choose
2) Discriminate against others on any basis of their choosing, including (but not limited to) looks, brains, race, color, creed, and wealth
3) Make as much money as they possibly can.
So what they're doing isn't out of line with freedom. Yes they charge a bunch, but that's what the free market is about, isn't it?
Well, considering that you're free also, you can also just ignore TED. You don't have to watch or pay attention to their vision. You are free, too.

Reply to Michael Nystrom and "The End of Work":
Seriously - unless you are a full-blow Keynesian or even Marxist then that doesn't make any sense!
If the free market is the most efficient allocator of all resources at any given time (which it is - see last 4000 years of documented history of non-interventionalist societies for reference), then wouldn't that actually be a dream come true?
If all jobs of the future are high-value jobs that require little man-power, then that labor will go somewhere. The amount of resources freed up by such a thing is staggering, and the implications for the vast increase in quality of life while experiencing a vast decrease in the COST of that quality (absent a central bank system and using a fully private money system) is actually pretty amazing.
We aren't going to look like India. India's government has made their economy decrepit for decades and may FINALLY be waking up to the untold damages of government actions past with the latest election. We will see - do I have high hopes, no, but it might just be a good place to invest after the deflationary carnage plays out.
Anyway, if you aren't familiar with them, I recommend reading some of Hayek's essays on how the free market allocates resources to exactly where they need based on profits (signals from people who have needs that what companies are doing is meeting them - profits mean keep it up and losses mean try something else or just don't!).
Cheers!

It's early September and I'm 80% cash and 20% long term Puts AGAINST the market. Gold is also going down. Want to know why?
http://www.investophoria....
I've thought about this for more than a second
I've read quite a bit of history and economics, and I'm not an ideologue - not Keynesian, Marxist nor Austrian. If God has blessed me with a brain, why would I (or anyone) choose to limit myself by simply mimicking the ideas of those who have lived before me and confining myself to their pre-made mold? What a pitiful waste of this miracle called life. It is enjoyable to read and consider the thoughts of other great thinkers, but I choose the freedom and independence to think my own thoughts.
There are two problems with Hayek's theories in the context of this video: 1) In the end, they're just theories. There is really no way to prove or disprove them. Theories always sound good on paper. Keynes's theories and Marx's theories sounded good to a lot of people at different times, but put into practice they didn't work out so great. So the Mises quote cuts both ways. Let me paraphrase: "Reality is precisely that which theories did not forsee."
For example, if a relatively small, wealthy subset of the population is perfectly content and has all of its needs met by automation, bioengineering & roboticization, what use would the rest of us be to them? Suppose technology advances to that stage, which is precisely what the video above is predicting. Not sometime in the distant future, but within our lifetimes. 2) This is the second problem with Hayek's theory – precisely the point of the original Mises quote: Progress.
What Enriquez is talking about in this video is progress. Specifically, progress as in the very evolution of the human species. I don't know if you watched the video or not, but that is what the reference to "the ultimate reboot" in the title means. We are on the brink of taking control of our own and other species evolution.
At about 16:00 in the presentation he starts talking about Darwin. What he says roughly is this:
"Evolution is a natural state in everything that is alive, including hominids. There have actually been 22 different species of hominids that have lived, wandered around on earth & gone extinct. It is common for hominids to evolve. There were five different species of homids alive at the same time, that overlapped: Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo floresiensis, Homo neanderthalensis and us - Homo sapiens.”
His point is that the common state of affairs on earth is to have overlapping versions of hominids -- not one, and his conclusion is that we will soon see the arrival of a new species of hominid, what he calls "Homo evolutis." That new species will be an intentional fork by certain members of our current species, leveraging the technologies that make up the bulk of the second half of his talk – robotics and bioengineering.
What are the implications of the arrival of a new species of hominid – Homo evolutis - on us? What do Hayek's theories have to say about that?
Nothing.
But his is what I have to say: When there were five different species of homids living on earth at the same time, do you think they lived together in peace? Probably not. They were all competing for the same resources, most probably, violently. And for whatever reason, we – meaning Homo sapiens – won. And we won the way we tend to do, by eliminating the competition.
So here comes the interesting part. As the new species of hominids arise, maybe they too will see us as competition that is best eliminated. Maybe they'll see us as just as hopeless, useless eaters, the way we looked at the neanderthals. Given the circumstances, there is no reason to assume that the labor freed up by the technology of the superior species will necessarily go somewhere useful.
In the event of a species bifurcation, I'd say all bets are off.
Fascinating video and
Fascinating video and interesting discussion!
Regarding "the end of work", I have had somewhat similar thoughts recently. There have been vast technological advancements in the last 100 years. Advancements not just for the society's elites, but for everyone throughout society (at least in the US). Technology advancements are supposed to make life easier and more pleasant, but instead the trend is that people work longer hours for more years than previous generations did. It's as though the benefits of technological advancements--lower prices for the necessities of life--have been stolen though a worldwide monetary policy of "mild" inflation, and the benefits have been handed out at the discretion of governments and central banks.
As an example, the price of food in nominal terms should be lower today than 100 years ago. I argue this because that's what science and technology are supposed to do for us. It's given us higher crop yields requiring less labor and with better transportation and storage. All of these things should make prices drop in a competitive market (and I claim even in spite of the increased demand from a larger population). But no, the Fed has been targeting 2% annual inflation for years. So the price of food is many times higher than it was 100 years ago. Instead of lower prices which benefit everyone, the benefits of the technological advancements have been stolen by the Fed and the government and handed out to bankers and the politically connected. Government has used this stolen wealth to subsidize many fields that employ many people but benefit few. Too many young people take easy-to-get student loans and waste their most energetic years engaged in selfish pursuits becoming experts in areas in which no one will ever pay them for their work. The market will handsomely compensate people who's work benefits the many, and they should be able to retire at a young age if they choose. People engaged in less beneficial fields with lots of competition would get paid less in a free market and would need to work many more years to retire. It's no surprise that banking and investment careers are some of the most lucrative in our society, since the entire system seems to be designed for their benefit.
My point is that it makes me very angry to look at the world in this way. I have not read any Hayek yet, but it sounds like I need to.
Regarding the evolution of a new technologically-enhanced version of humans, I believe this would be different from naturally occurring evolution for two reasons. 1) To a large degree I believe these advances could be controlled or removed from people who abuse them. And 2) these advances wouldn't have emerged through survival of the fittest. There will be weaknesses in these technologies that could be exploited, and adaptation to new conditions would be contingent on deliberate human development work to continue to make them viable. Just as a planned society or economy is less effective than free and organically developing society/economy, the same would hold true for biological systems. I think these kinds of technological advancements won't be effective beyond enhancing organically developed capabilities (such as improved hearing or vision), and a "Homo Evolutis" species that attempts to go beyond this is destined to failure just like socialist utopias are destined to failure.

This is why we need national healthcare, pollution, GMO and the Federal Reserve.
This immortality rendering technology can't be used and enjoyed with such a large population and distributed resources.
We need to centralize the resources through the federal reserve and food supply control.
We need most of the squatters to go.
GMO, pollution, and controllable medical system will help us thin them out. We can do it like turning a dial through the medical system which treats the pollution effects as we need it to or decreases treatment as we need it to. We can keep a useful number until our more pleasant robotic partners can assist us and we will no longer need to trifle with the remainder.

Why This Won't Work & Is Undesirable
If you want to know why this by now rather elderly idea, which was floating around in the 20's of the last century, cannot work (i.e. contains internal contradictions that make it on its own terms impossible), and why you wouldn't want it to work if it could, pick up a thin little book of 3 lectures by C.S. Lewis entitled "The Abolition of Man." You may not like this book if you cannot tolerate developed linear argument as opposed to funny zingers.
