Bob Marley was one of us!
Submitted by Cicero23 on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 21:44
Was cruising in the car, listening to this timeless classic when the lyrics hit me like a lightning bolt...
Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfill the book.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfill the book.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs -
All I ever had:
Redemption songs:
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.

Get up! Stand up!
That was the first thing on the local radio the morning me and my buddies hopped in the car to go and vote. About the only thing getting me pumped to vote for Chuck Baldwin, being as the ballot was sans Ron Paul.

(Amy) Allen considers herself a paleo-Libertarian and composed a theme song for the Ron Paul movement.
"I felt like I had to do something, and I didn't know what to do, so I wrote a song. When I met Ron Paul he said, 'You've done more for the revolution in a short period than years of me giving speeches. Bob Marley created political change through music. Music is very powerful; never forget that.' I thought - shit! - that's awesome. I was just frustrated with the overall trend to have the government take care of us from cradle to grave, the overall trend of us losing our civil liberties, and I had no choice in it to just write a song." http://www.nuvo.net/music/article/aimee-allen-takes-refuge-c...
I did like what Ron Paul told her about Bob Marley!

I could spend all day on this thread! :) Bob Marley was Ethiopian Orthodox (not denying his Rastafarianism). Selassie was a Christian. Do I really have to go into the historical wars between Ethiopia and the Vatican? Wake up and Live!!

Jah Rastafari, Hallie Selassie, King of Kings
Bob Marley considered himself a Jew, as Rastafiarians consider themselves the "lost tribe", the 12th tribe, the decendents of Mary, Tribe of David, which, "The Urantia", lists the blood lines to Haile Selassie, THE King of Kings JAHOVAH, confirming Jesus is Black, Africa is Zion, and the revolution is elimination white babylon.
Rastafarians study and refeer to passages of the Urantia and King James Bible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rastafari_movement
Of course white people LOVE exploiting black people and their movements for themselves. When I came to the revolution, Three Shoe Posse was the first RP song I ever heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naMtwqBzja0 I loved it, and I really thought we had the opportunity to become the first mixed race populist movement, truely a neo-populist movement. What happened the 3 shoe posse?
Rastafari is not apart
Rastafari is not apart of the jewish religion and Bob never claimed to be a jew. Rasta is a way of life. It takes into consideration allot of the old testament such as the nazarite vow and dietary recommendations. There are things that are taken from the Jews such as the lineage of Selassie I from King David. Selassie I was a devout Christian and head to the Etheopian Orthodox Church. I read over what you said and for the most part you have it right except for Babylon is not "white people" it is more the western church compared to the canon of the Etheopian Orthodox Church.

Tribe of Dan... not David.. Tribe of Dan

Rastas don't cut their hair, don't shave, vegetarian diet, based on OLD testement They are "Jews for Jesus"., simular as LDS
In whose political circle would Bob Marley be comfortable?
I think the answer is Fidel Castro, Evo Morales, Cesar Chavez, and Nelson Mandela. He opposed the idea of white colonial rule of blacks or indigenous people, which I think Libertarians would also oppose, but Libertarians would not replace this rule with a socialist regime as these "revolutionaries" would.
I think you fellows are reading into Marley's lyrics your own views on what a revolution should be and misunderstanding his own Pan African socialist views.
I think the only legitimate identity with Bob Marley and some of the people on this site is that they are stoners.
I never heard Bob Marley Endorse the Politicians you've named.
Nor did he verbalize a "socialist" political philosophy, as you claim for him. In reality, he consistently argued against trusting government for anything. Why are you projecting upon him? It's condescending. Is it because he was a "stoner"?
Understanding Bob Marley>
On the positive side, he did oppose colonialism and the related enslavement, something all freedom loving people would do.
He was a Rastafarian, a group whose followers declared that the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie was the living God. Selassie's 40-year rule in Ethiopia was characterized by nepotism, personal cowardice and tyranny, so that tells you something about Marley's political views right there.
In 1980 he played at the celebrations marking the end of white supremacist rule in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.. His song 'Zimbabwe', celebrating the new black-led nation, features on the album Survival. This release, which carries the flags of all Africa's countries on the sleeve, is a clear and call for African unity. And this is who Bob Marley was; a black separatist, Pan Africanist. What has happened in Africa when black rule has replaced white, European colonialism has been oppression. Look at Zimbabwe today and the slaughter no only of white "Rhodesians" but the slaughter of the black political opposition; and don't forget the hyperinflation of the currency. Look at South Africa which has become a socialist nation where the government owned and operated electric system is about to collapse from the incompetence of government management. And let us not forget one of Bob Marley's fellow Pan Africanist, Idi Amin, Chairman of the Organization of African Unity and tyrannical President of Uganda.
I think an honest assessment of Marley was that he was rebelling against white colonial rule, he wanted black separatism along the lines of Marcus Garvey who inspired Leonard Howell to found the Rastafarian group, he was a good song writer, he was very deeply into escape through ganga, and endorsed at least two tyrannical rulers of African nations.
To the extent that Marley opposed slavery, he might be considered to have values similar to Ron Paul, but I think Marley shows that he was more interested in overthrowing the existing power structure he saw as oppressive to blacks, than he was in instituting freedom. I think what he wanted was black rule of blacks and separate white rule of whites.
I have no problem with people being stoners as I believe in freedom, but I do have a problem with people who complain about being enslaved by one race only to endorse enslavement by those of their own race.
And Look at What Has Become of the USA!
Using your logic, should one infer that proponents of overthrowing colonial rule here in the USA were actually seeking what we have wound up with today? That would not be an accurate assumption - as it isn't in Marley's case. Bob Marley was a spiritual person first - a mystic. He was not a proponent of government, but he was a very vocal proponent of freedom. And I agree, he did not express an interest in "instituting freedom." Can freedom be "instituted"? Freedom is. From what you have said it appears that you have read about Bob Marley and Rastafarianism. However, it seems to me you have not done a lot of listening to Bob Marley himself. You think he is just "good"! Which is fine! But why would you opine so profusely and authoritatively - and condescendingly?
Henry
"I think what he wanted was black rule of blacks and separate white rule of whites."
Bob Marley endorsed splitting himself in half?
Good gracious I suppose "Jr. Gong" is really troubled by this ambition then.

I think most mixed race people see themselves as
one or the other. His identification with the downtrodden slaves of colonial oppression should tell you something about his own identity.
Are you at all considering a spiritual angle in your reasonings?
I identify with Bob Marley "spiritually".
Bob Marley fed over 3000 people A DAY in Jamaica.
He practiced what he preached, is that to be considered socialism or a self-made man who was thankful, gracious and willingly returned blessings? Isn't this the sort of character we espouse here? Bob Marley had a lot of "Ayn Rand moments" -- to "get his own" so that he might multiply his good fruit for the betterment of all men.
And perhaps you're correct that Marley would have "hung out" with Chavez or some other crackpot. However, "One Love" would be his message to all, not "One World". Perhaps you should take a listen to his children to see how Marley's message continues. I would recommend Stephen Marley - Mind Control for starters.
I don't know what to tell you about Selassie. I was shocked after much research to see him portrayed as a "despot" as all my prior research had found him to be "sought after" by his people. I guess it depends on who's telling the story. Consider Ethiopia's strongest opposition and ask yourself "what's going on here?"

Yes, and I would like to add that
Bob Marley did not seek out political figures to hang out with at all! That whole premise that he would hang out with so-and-so is pure projection and deception. He did not place his trust in politicians - he did not campaign for them Selassie, he considered God, the second coming, the Lord - not a politician. Marley and his music are spiritual subjects, yes. And what an awe-inspiring spirit.
My opinion
I do not agree about Marley considering Selassie "God" but a highly reverenced spiritual ruler with super-mystical qualities.
Reference the kids again.
Damian Marley - It Was Written (Stephen's part is haunting.)
Selassie does come with the lineage of King David through Mary, was stigmatic and many "spiritual" things happened "around him". Obviously Selassie was not the "Second Coming" as his bones were buried and remain in the grave.
According to one of the I-Three's, on Marley's deathbed, "Selassie" was not spoken but "Jesus":
VICTOR: One of the things I’ve heard over the years, and I do not know that it’s true, is that just before Bob Marley died in 1981, he came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
JUDY: That makes two of us. I’ve heard the same thing. His wife, Rita Marley, said to me when he was in so much excruciating pain that he said 'Jesus, take me.' He stretched out his hands and said 'Jesus, take me.' Now, I’m saying to myself, he could have said 'Selassie take me,' but he said 'Jesus, take me.'
VICTOR: What would you say to Rastafarians watching this program today, based on what you now know about Jesus Christ?
JUDY: Truth is a person: Jesus Christ. I have come to understand through listening to an interview with His Imperial Majesty – the interviewer asked His Majesty, 'Why do people all over the world say you are the returned Messiah?' His Imperial Majesty’s answer was, 'I am a mere man. I will be replaced by the oncoming generation, and a human being should not be emulated for a deity.' I have that cassette. I did not see anything about Haile Selassie in the Bible. I saw Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ lives. Tell the world that He is the conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Plenty of people can identify slavery.
But how many can suggest the correct solution. I don't see anything in those lyrics that shows Marley to be a Libertarian. Martin Luther King complained about the lack of freedom and suggest more government plunder and control, hardly a solution to restore freedom.

Like a bird in the tree, the prisoners must be free, yeah! (free)
Never make a politician (aaa-aaah) grant you a favour;
(doo-doo-doo-doo)
They will always want (aaa-aaah) to control you forever, eh!
(forever, forever)
So if a fire make it burn (make it burn, make it burn)
And if a blood make ya run (make ya run, run, run),
Rasta de 'pon top (aaa-aaah), can't you see? (doo-doo-doo-doo)
So you can't predict the flop. Eh-eh! (doo-doo-doo-doo)
We got lightning (lightning), thunder (thunder),
brimstone (brimstone) and fire - fire (fire, fire);
Lightning (lightning), thunder (thunder),
brr-brimstone (brimstone) and fire - fiyah - fire - fiyah!
(fire, fire)
Kill, cramp and paralyze all weak at conception;
(aaa-aaah, doo-doo-doo-doo)
Wipe them out of creation (creation), yeah-eah! (creation)
Wa-Jah, Jah, Jah! Wa-Jah, Jah, Jah! (creation)
Wa-Jah, Jah, Jah! (creation)
Oh! Let i'es is i'es (i'es), in i'es is black (i'es),
In i'es is red (i'es), in i'es is dread.
Let righteousness cover the earth
Like the water (aaa-aaah) cover the sea, yeah! Yeah!
Lightning (lightning), doo-doo-doo (thunder),
doo-doo-doo (brimstone), doo-doo-doo (fire, fire);
A lightning (lightning), thunder (thunder),
brimstone (brimstone) and fire.

See them fighting for power (ooh-wee, ooh-wee, ooh-wa!),
But they know not the hour (ooh-wee, ooh-wee, ooh-wa!),;
So they bribing with their guns, spare-parts and money,
Trying to belittle our
Integrity now.
They say what we know
Is just what they teach us;
And we're so ignorant
'Cause every time they can reach us (shoobe, doo-wa)
Through political strategy (shoo-be, doo-wa);
They keep us hungry (shoobe, doo-wa),
And when you gonna get some food (shoobe, doo-wa),
Your brother got to be your enemy, we-e-ell!
Zimbabwe
Every man gotta right to decide his own destiny,
And in this judgement there is no partiality.
So arm in arms, with arms, we'll fight this little struggle,
'Cause that's the only way we can overcome our little trouble.
No more internal power struggle;
We come together to overcome the little trouble.
Soon we'll find out who is the real revolutionary,
'Cause I don't want my people to be contrary
If you can find it on youtube there is a video of Bob at one of his concerts were he gets both sides of the political parties in Jamaica to come on stage and shake hands and sing. Actually here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCckz9jFi9M
Another person I look up to when thinking about those that fight for freedom is Jean Leapold Dominique of Radio Haiti. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlB7Y7xDB6U&feature=related
If you like reggae check out Joseph Israel he did a free concert of two for Congressman Paul in NW Arkansas. www.myspace.com/josephisrael
