What can I do for the Revolution? Write music. Presenting "Revolution" Performed by UNI Jazz Band One
Revolution was my primary composition project in the Fall of 2008/Spring of 2009 and was written to commemorate the Hempstead 15.
The Hempstead 15 was my inspiration for writing "Revolution". I was so moved, so horrified after watching what happened outside of the final 2008 presidential debates between McCain and Obama in Hempstead, NY that it steered me into a brand new direction on the large jazz band ensemble piece I was working on.
The solo section (guitar @1:40) was what went through my mind though shortly after watching the film that is shown @1:40. The beginning and the end of the piece grew from this climactic point stuck in my brain.
Revolution is written for 1 soprano sax, 1 clarinet/tenor sax, 1 alto sax, 1 baritone sax, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 bass trombone, guitar, piano, vibraphone, upright bass and drums.
Please comment and rate ~ this is my first attempt at making a video and sticking it on youtube.

Great work Courtney!
Lest we forget the treachery of the State.
Its rare to see IVAW and Ron Paul revolution used in the same breath. That is a sad state of affairs. Adam Kokesh would be proud.

awesome stuff
I, too, am a musician (guitar, piano, voice) and apart from my college work I've been getting into songwriting and concentrating on libertarian themes and such for my band. We're just starting up but I have a lot of musical experience and a passion for the movement. Hopefully we can come up with some great tunes.
If we don't change our direction, we're likely to end up where we are headed.
Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth
-George Washington
I like that quote the best. I love quotes, thanks for putting them to music, and it's refreshing to here orchestra stuff.
I imagine you had fun doing that. I give you a high five for the effort.
Write on brother, write on.
Absolutely fantastic!
I have been a life-long Frank Zappa fan. When he died sixteen years ago, and political correctness became the new fashion, I was afraid that unfettered freedom of expression had passed away with him. I was awestruck to hear how reminiscent your music is of his.To my ear, a bit of Sinister Footwear and something from Yellow Shark I cannot identify. It was often said that Frank was ahead of his time. Perhaps his time has come and will be brought to the fore by talent such as yours. That this wonderful music should be introduced here and in support of this cause is all the more prescient considering Frank's own battles for liberty.
For those that do not know, Frank Zappa was the original R3evoltionary of the post modern era. He fought Al and Tipper Gore when they tried to censor rock and roll records. He fought big corporate music industrialists when they told him "You can't make music like that! No one will buy it because we won't sell it." He made it and sold it without them and gained millions of fans around the world. He is considered by many prominent classical musicians in Europe to be the greatest American composer of the 20th century. And, he never ceased to comment on the corruption and tyranny of the 'Powers That Be'.
That such music lives again and joins in the fight for liberty gives me the greatest hope for our future. I think I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. ( I hope it isn't the headlamp of an oncoming train!)

Right On!
I was going to ask Courtney if she listens to FZ
I too am a huge fan of his music since 1969 ....
many of his political viewpoints were libertarian - i thought he ran in 88 as
libertarian when Ron Paul ran ... and of course RP was the nominee (??)
He surely stood up for the constitution ... clearly seen when he addressed congress and the PMRC .....
A great American composer!
(also - remember the basis for Joe's Garage ... the idea that music was going to be outlawed)
AWESOME Courtney!!!
BRILLIANT.
The composition is buffet of styles and techniques that never miss a beat, because of the great conduction by Chris Merz. What a treat to the senses, and to top it off... "Revolution". Perfect. The dedication to Hempstead 15 is political awarness.. very poeric, very beat, and despite the ugly and violent folm footage, with again, that awesome composition really attacking the senses,,, I think I heard the fat lady sing. ;))
I would really like to see this as a hot YouTube.

P.S. And, as an Iowan, I'm proud to see that you are a student at the University of Northern Iowa.

this is well done.
Thank you.
way to go courtney!
Thanks for offering up your creative talents! Music has the power to move people like nothing else.

Thank you so much. Your music is a beautiful reminder that we need to pace ourselves. In addition to fighting for freedom, we need to take the time to exercise it, and to celebrate it. The fight for Liberty is a marathon, not a sprint. In the documentary For Liberty, Ron Paul says that the revolution needs music.
I love your title, What can I do for the Revolution? Write music. This is another reminder that we all do what we are best at, and what we love, for the cause of Liberty.
As Ron Paul says, he ideas of the revolution will be all pervasive. They will permeate all of politics, society, culture, art and jazz. Looks like we've got a strong foothold in jazz. Thank you.
This came to mind as I was writing:
Bird on a horizon
sitting on a fence,
he's singing a song for me
at his own expense
And I'm just like that bird
singing just for you
I can make it through
you can make it too.
- Bob Dylan
