John Dennis Speech from Walnut Creek Tea Party 10/28/09 (original text)
I'm John Dennis and I'm running against Nancy Pelosi.
That is the greatest applause line of my life.
Thank you all for your gracious support in our effort to unseat the most reviled politician in America
And I want to thank all of you for inspiring me to run. I never wanted to run for office, I didn't build a career or resume for a politician. But like many of you I was frustrated and furious with the growth of the Federal government. And I waited for a candidate to stand up and say the things that I wanted to hear. Finally, I decided to be that candidate.
Last Friday Nancy Pelosi was asked whether or not the Constitution authorizes the Federal government to create a health insurance program. Ms. Pelosi replied “Are you serious? Are you serious?” Later at the same press conference her spokesperson made a point of belittling further the reporter who asked the question by saying “You can put this on the record. That is not a serious question.”
This country is a mess. We have a mountain of debt we can never repay. Consequently, the dollar is continuously being devalued, which will have a devastating effect on a country that relies on imports. We lose hundreds of thousands of jobs each month. And unemployment, if it was measured the same way now as it was in the 1970'2, would be over 20%.
I ask you: If the Federal government had followed the Constitution, would we be in this mess today?
So yes, Mrs. Pelosi, with all due respect, we ARE serious. We DO want you to defend the constitutional authority of every bill. In fact, that should be the first question YOU should ask, Madame Speaker.
