Newly elected Cuban Mayor wants American police chief out. Will Miami , FL be a mess again?
To all Daily-Paulers: you need to flood the City of Miami, FL with emails, phone calls or regular mails to say "No" to New elected Cuban Mayor Tomas Regalado who cannot wait to get John Timoney out as chief of the Miami Police force.
Straight from New York, prior to his taking over as the head of Miami Police Agency in 2003, the City of Miami was marred with scandals, corruption which turned to be an embarassment for eveyone in South Florida. During his tenure, John Timoney (brought in by out-going Mayor, Manny Diaz also a Cuban-American raised, and educated in the United States) has cleaned up things and restored the image of Miami to a better reception. Apparently, Mr. Regalado, who immigrated to the United States fom Cuba during his adulthood, thinks that Mr. Timoney is too though for him, so he doesn't want him around anymore.
To tell the truth, I don't like police. Police do frighten, intimidate, and coerce by taking your freedom away; but I strongly believe anyone should have the liberty and choice to live, work, participate, educate himself anywhere he/she chooses to do so.
The main problem is that Timoney does not speak Spanish--a huge problem for non-spanish speakers in Miami. To hold a job here or to feel like being home, you must or ought to be bilingual (Spanish/English) regardless whether you are white or black, if not you should either be jobless or move somewhere else. That's the major reason why Miami-Dade County has been plagued with lack of integrity and honesty, and is always politically incorrect due the fact it's almost only one culture or ethnicity in command.
But, many Americans have blamed the federal government (precisely the Clinton and 3 Bush Administrations) for turning United States into a bilingual country.
English should be the principal and official language of the land to conduct trade and business in addition to all other social activities.
Even, Dr. Ron Paul once complained by not having English as the official language of the land.
The sad thing is , when many Hispanics even Cubans and Columbians commit crimes or do other bad things in Miami-Dade County, when they are caught, the first thing they would ask for would be an interpreter, pretending they did not understand their actions just to cover up.
Every immigrant should be required or mandated to learn english for better communication and understanding amongst all, which would be a plus for everyone.
Hopefully the Obama Administration takes this issue seriously by asking congress to pass laws requiring everyone to learn and speak English. Otherwise, be penalized for not adopting youself to the rules of the United States. If John Timoney is gone, his replacement to be mostly likely a fellow Cuban, and the City of Miami may soon turn to be a joke once again. You may see the FBI and Florida Law Enforcement Agencies come to Miami on a weekly basis as watchdogs for a second clean-up.
Mr. Regalado will take the Oath of Office on Wednesday October 11, 2009 at 12:00 PM, to contact him at the City of Miami:

It sounds like the new mayor
It sounds like the new mayor doesn't like to be held accountable. However, I do have to disagree as far as English being the 'official' language of the uSA.
This country has, historically, been considered the Melting Pot. The reason being that all immigrants were welcome in America where if you worked hard and did all the right things, you too could achieve the American dream. It didn't hinge on which language you spoke or where you came from. Liberty and the ability to reap the fruits of your labor was all that you needed.
At times in our country, sadly, we've discriminated against nearly each race and/or nation of people. Forcing someone to speak/know a language is another form of discrimination. Its another form of infringing on someone's liberty. If we held true to your logic, we'd all have had to learn a Native American language to be a true citizen of America.
I agree, it would be to everyone's benefit if those that chose to live in this country would learn to speak and read English. But the fact is, they are free to make that decision themselves. One can get by perfectly in America without having to know the language. All you need to do is find the community that speaks your language. Although your neighbors can act as your interpreter for everyday things, legal interpreters are necessary so that we can make sure that all are treated equally under the law. (laughable nowdays I know)
I lived in AZ for a time . . . to live there is similar in that the majority of people knew some Spanish and were able to get along in either language. The Mexican people, for the most part, learned English because they knew it would increase their chances for work and would help their children in the schools. (I'm talking about LEGAL Mexican immigrants.) They understand that they are looked down upon when they don't speak English. But they too have come here looking for the American Dream that all of our ancestors once sought, even though they didn't speak the language either
We are not all of English ancestry. My ancestors spoke Gaelic and French. They didn't speak English when they came here, but they contributed to this country as we each do in our own way. To force someone to speak a certain language is an infringement on liberty and all that this country stands for. Just my unbiased, rotten opinion.
