My local Catholic church asked for everyone to call their reps...
And vote YES on the Healthcare Reform bill.
it was a message from the Bishop.
(sigh).
Edit:
This was at the following parish: http://www.sij-parish.com...
They said that the Bishop supports the new Healthcare Reform. We must call our senators to remove insurance companies that participate in............... Abortion.
The implication is that everything else about the bill is good and that everyone should have health insurance.
then i found this:

Those who blindly obey a
Those who blindly obey a chain of command- particularly one that leads up to a mere mortal who presumes (blasphemously) to understand the will of god- have surrendered their critical faculty in favor of unmitigated, ignorant servitude. Despite what a lifetime of religious programming might have you believe, "faith" is not a quality to be admired; on the contrary, it is a substitute for truth, or the pursuit thereof, and when shared across a social organization- like church- it manifests all of the disastrous consequences of groupthink that have been the bane of social and scientific progress for centuries.
Isn't that a violation of 501c3 rules?
Anyone else remember the Pasadena church that was investigated by the IRS for an anti-war sermon?

U.S Bishops ignoring JPII's warning of the "Welfare State"
Although papal documents are infallible, pronouncements from the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops have always been suspect. They seem to be picking and choosing Catholic doctrine that fit their pre-conceived political agenda:
http://www.usccb.org/heal...
Yet, we have to look no further back than Pope John Paul II's 1991 encyclical Centesimus Annus for a condemnation of the "Social Assistance State" and an advancement of the principle of "subsidiarity". Subsidiarity says the individual should help himself, and if not, his family, and if not his family, then his church and/or local community, and if not his church and/or local community, then his local government, and if not his local government, than his regional or larger government.
http://www.vatican.va/hol...
It is precisely due to the violation of the principle of subsidiarity that we find ourselves in the situation today of not being able to depend upon family and community and instead depending upon the federal government. Catholic hospitals used to be the ones who provided healthcare to the needy, but now the government does by way of Medicare, Social Security, various state programs, and the government-subsidized employer-based healthcare system. Catholic hospitals have been edged out by secular hospitals as a result (so much for the idea that government should neither advance nor hinder religion).
If there is to be any government healthcare at all -- in order to keep with the U.S. Constitution -- it should be at the state level, not the federal level.
Colorado, for example, already has a "public option". It's called Cover Colorado. Although not cheap (its premiums to subscribers are comparable to market rates), it eliminates the supposed main complaint of the current healthcare system, which is one cannot be denied for pre-existing conditions.
Pelosi-care constitutes an usurpation of what should be the purview of the states.
thank you...
good post.
It is the churches job
to take care of the sick, feed the hungry, cloth the naked, give the homeless a place to stay. If your "church" feels someone else should be doing there job then you should go somewhere else.
Mixing of religion and politics frighten me
This should not happen.

I have promised not to comment again there
but please see my thread "Why I am afraid of Christians."
Why does that not threaten their tax status?
you normally have some good
you normally have some good posts, but "Why" one was not one of them...
you might as well have said, "Why I am afraid of People", because the number of christians you need to genuinely fear is so minute as to make their membership in the said collective....irrelevant.
perhaps you could have just gone with, "Why I am afraid of Bad People"
I've posted my fair share of heated posts in response to many holier-than-thou types on this board. But I've also layed into atheists as well.
I think you're wasting your effort trying to keep a crusade going against the "bad christians".
It's pointless. Now if you have a specific person to critique then by all means.
Anyway, these "atheists will be the end of us all" threads or likewise the "christians will be the end of us all" threads are just plain stupid.
It's like when I read some comments on youtube, "Islam is evil", I can't help but think it's some idiot, michael savage wannabe, sonofagun who can't help himself.
That's how you come across. Like the guy posting "islam is evil" crap.
Some
relevant prophecies by Catholic saints: "When the Church and the world are one those days are upon you." "The Church shall be in eclipse." "Satan shall enter the highest levels of the Church." The fault lies with that bishop. A Fulton Sheen would be helpful about now.
I'm ashamed of some of these responses
As a libertarian, all people to me are individuals. Blasting entire groups of people because of the actions of individuals is folly. It's like saying all congressmembers should be voted out of office (Dr. Paul?) or are racist because they have racist campaign supporters (Dr. Paul?).
Please don't live your life hating people you don't even know.

Time for a new church?
Hmmm. All organized religion is suspect. This just confirms it.

The Church
wants the Government to do their work????
That is one of many
reasons why I have removed my name from the parish rolls and stopped giving any financial support to them.
that
is why I have left organized religion.
Has this Bishop ever sent out a statement about
Opposing illegal occupations of sovereign nations and the killings of MILLIONS of innocent civilians??? HAS HE???
I think not... Damn him and all other religious leaders that have a chance to speak out to STOP the KILLING and yet remain silent! Damn them all to HELL!! They have power over so many and THIS is how they choose to use it.?..to advance the ruling elite for more power and control!? Now you see why so many are upset with the role of most religious leaders today!

The Roman Church
has zero tolerance for other religions or creeds so they will not say a word about the occupations we have all over the world. They would have been extinct like T REX if they were not granted the power forcefully convert the pagans.

"Dear Member of Congress:
On behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), we are writing to express our
disappointment that progress has not been made on the three priority criteria for health care reform that we have
conveyed previously to Congress. In fact, the Senate Finance Committee rejected a conscience rights amendment
accepted earlier by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. If final legislation does not meet our principles,
we will have no choice but to oppose the bill...Exclude mandated coverage for abortion, and incorporate longstanding policies against abortion funding
and in favor of conscience rights. No one should be required to pay for or participate in abortion. It is
essential that the legislation clearly apply to this new program longstanding and widely supported federal
restrictions on abortion funding and mandates, and protections for rights of conscience. No current bill
meets this test..."

tax exempt?
If they were tax-exempt (your donations to the church were deductible from your taxes) they violated the rules. File a complaint and they will lose their tax-exempt status.
This describes how to file a complaint. Change the church name. http://lds501c3.wordpress...
Tax
I'm a Protestant and of course I disagree with unconstitutional national health care, but churches are not businesses. Why do you want the government to be taxing them? Also, I don't think you understand the tax law very well as it relates to churches; although there are some limitations, churches are not prohibited from speaking out on issues. See http://www.lc.org/media/9... and http://www.lc.org/media/9...
From the IRS website
You are right when you say, "Also, I don't think you understand the tax law very well as it relates to churches;"
Let's see what the IRS says. From the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/charit...
In addition, it may not be an action organization, i.e., it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.
Not that 501(c)3 is in any way good for the church
But, please define "substantial part" for me. Are there any guidelines or rules of thumb enumerated in prior rulings on the matter? If not, unless the church is "substantially" involved in political activity, or actively participating in elections, they are free to serve mammon until the last judgment. All the while advocating the expansion of the state. Do you really think that the IRS would take 501(c)3 from an organization which is encouraging the expansion of the powers of the IRS?

The Catholic Church will become the one world religion
Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must. like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.-Thomas Paine
The R3volution requires action, not observation!!!!
I used to be one, until I found a religion that did not think you could buy your way into heaven. No offense Catholics, but like the rest of this craziness going on, we have even been duped by our own religion. Bible said that would happen though, so no surprise here. Find a new church, preferably one that does not believe you can confess your sins to a priest and be forgiven. The only way to the Father is through the Son, I don't see priest or the Virgin Mary anywhere in that statement. Just one example for you. Do some research and find the Truth.

so why would you still go to
so why would you still go to church there?
A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 22:3
I would say that the almighty is
telling you something.....quit going to that church. More bull from the religion entwined sheep.
OMG! And they will ...
because the Bishop said so!! This is why so many posts on here concerned about how the power of religious leaders/churches are able to shape political and moral opinion . It's obscene and an affront to the thinking moral individual! Collectivism encouraged through religious mouthpieces for the advancemant of the ruling elite.

that's exactly what i was

all the people in that church heard it and i KNOW they're not half as awake as we are.
