Students clash with police as tuition is set to Inflate 32 percent this year.
They are NOT happy.

Wards of the State
It is clear to me that if anyone benefits from a person getting a college education it's that person. So I see no reason why a college student shouldn't have to pay for his education himself, with some modest use of loans, rather than be subsidized by the taxes of working class taxpayers who never got to go to college themselves. (When I went to MIT 30 years ago I paid for 70% of the costs with summer jobs, my parents paid for 15%, and the other 15% was a loan that I quickly paid off.) It is true that college costs have inflated much faster than other prices over the past few decades, as have health costs. But both college and health care are heavily subsidized by government. That encourages padding of costs and discourages creating better efficiencies, so is the reason why the price of education and health care keep going up so fast.
Keep in mind that 80% of what you learn in college can be learned by buying the right textbooks, reading them, and doing the exercises at the end of the chapters. Despite the high costs of textbooks that's still orders of magnitude cheaper than tuition.

UCLA Protests are as Impotent as Voting and Lobbying
They are PROTESTING to get their Gov't Controlled and Fiat Financed Educations back on track.
If I knew then what I knew now I would have never got an advanced degree in Economics / Child Development.

I learned a number of years ago that CA had stopped building new colleges, they extended campus, and offered BS courses, but colleges were shrinking despite the mioney being poured in, and prisons were booming. The privatized prison industry has jobs, and I'm sure it's the intended furite for many who oppose war.
The raise is in "fees", not tuition
Still one of the most affordable instate tuitions in the country.
What do you mean Tuition "Inflates"...there is no inflation!
That is sarcasm for anyone that doesn't get it.

I just got a call yesterday
from a community college in California I was supposed to start teaching for next semester. It was only one class and the field of nutrition is in extremely high demand. I figured that the community colleges would be filling up because 4-year college tuition is so high. It was the Dean and he told me they were told to cut back on over 1000 hours of education so they couldn't hire me. I was ok with that because it was only one class but what I had to go through to get hired by these clowns. I had to get fingerprinted and a TB test for teaching online!
Anyway, so not only are they raising rates but they are also cutting the amount of classes. There will be rioting in the streets. Where are these young people supposed to go when the unemployment rate is so high and they can't get an education? Education is the only way out for most of these kids.

The reason it seems the only way out
for students is: decades of minimum wage legislation eliminated so many entry-level positions; and it's illegal to take someone on as an unpaid apprentice, though they have no usable skills.
Plus years of public school propaganda told them the only "worthwhile" jobs were white collar drone jobs working for corporations or the bureaucracy.
We have several generations that have no real knowledge of productive work, so they are helplessly dependent on the system. Of course today it's even worse because federal mismanagement of the economy has squandered and looted resources until businesses are broke and have to fire even productive employees.
The only way up is to get the parasite bureaucracy and its taxes and regulation off peoples' backs so individuals can create their own entry-level jobs. Small entrepreneurship can only flourish in freedom. the more managed an economy, only powerful corporations and special interests on the dole can survive.
The rest of us become wage slaves forever with no way out. If the State fails, as they always do, the people get sucked down with it.
Seriously... unpaid apprentice is illegal?
how can the govt tell you that you cannot work for no wage in order to learn a skill?
When I graduated highschool I was an apprentice for 18 months in a machine shop to learn how to build racing engines for all types of races and manufacturers. It was a great experience and taught me invaluable skills as far as order, precision, and cleanliness.

The Liberty a society retains is inversely proportional to the number of Lawyers in the Government.
A bit long, but here's a summary from
The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries:
"Nowadays, apprentices are members of a production force as they train on the job and in the classroom. They are paid wages, work a regular workweek, and live in their own home rather than that of a master. Their apprenticeship agreements set out the work processes in which they are to be trained and the hours and wages for each training period. At the end of their apprenticeship, they receive certificates that are similar to the diplomas awarded the engineering graduates of universities.
Annually there are nearly one-half million registered apprentices in training in American industry. They are learning under the guidance of experienced craft workers in such skilled occupations as computer operator, machinist, bricklayer, dental laboratory technician, tool and dye maker, electrician, drafter, electronic technician, operating engineer, maintenance mechanic, and many more. Management, labor, and government work together to promote apprenticeship and to develop sound standards for its practice. In many communities, joint management-labor apprenticeship committees conduct and supervise the local programs." the link to the page containing that quote is here:

Frankly, these kids would be better off if they leaped into real
life and shook the dust of UCLA off their sneakers. Whatever the price, the "education" they're getting has to stink. Besides, it's based on a world that is passing away in front of our very eyes.
yes, but *they* don't know where to begin--

lol basically I'm agreeing with you
This is just the beginning: CA has a $20.7B deficit next year!
None of this is going away.
"The state will face $20 billion annual deficits through 2015"
State budget drowning in red ink for next year
Wyatt Buchanan, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau
Thursday, November 19, 2009
California again is facing a mammoth budget deficit and the prospect of more severe cuts to state services, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office warned in a report released Wednesday.
Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor said the state will face a $20.7 billion deficit next year and that the Legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger need to start work to fill that gap "as soon as possible." He also noted that many one-time fixes state leaders have relied on in the past to close deficits are not available. The state will face $20 billion annual deficits through 2015 if permanent fixes are not made, he warned.
The dire news comes only four months after lawmakers approved a controversial plan to close a $24 billion shortfall in the current fiscal year, which began July 1. That plan, signed by the governor on July 28, relied on state worker furloughs, partial closures of state parks, and funding cuts to the California State University and University of California systems and many health and welfare programs.

Welcome to reality.
This is what happens when the government pays for something then runs out of money. All the liberals think its the greatest state then .....bankruptcy. They can't squeeze any more taxes out of anyone. Now the liberals are mad....where is our free stuff? Why is the middle class not paying for our free stuff?
reality, yes--
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
but I believe you are oversimplifying---
not all of these young people are wealthy OR liberals. Some of them are struggling, and they have seen (up to now) education as their 'hope'--
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
expect more of this
As the government 2 party system destroys the currency and the federal and state governments are forced to shut down massive payment programs and services and more and more people are unemployed and state program cost skyrocket from lack of money and inflation on imports, tax protest, cost increase protest and welfare and pension shortage protest will increase exponentially over the next 24 months....the problem now is that the fascist in government have given the capital and resources to the international bankers and their cronies. Their last option is pure inflation...crank up the printing presses and hand out devalued fiat currency....but our foreign creditors may have something to say about this....
Kalifornia
Why anyone would have anything to do with Kalifornia is beyond me; vote with your feet, folks.

Jesse Ventura had the right idea I think. He lives off grid in Baja. He says the waves are good and no crowds.
A problem California has had
A problem California has had for a long time, is politicians here realizing the natural attractions of the state are so strong, people will put up with almost any kind of abuse without leaving. I can only imagine what a wonderland it must have been for those who came out here, before the busybody slimebags now hell bent on running the place into the ground for their own amusement, caught up with them.

To describe California like a dream, it really is. Its amazing that such as place exists but much of it is based on illusion, from standard of living, fashion, and perfect weather. They are eating themselves alive.

Riot? looks like a protest to me
For Freedom!
For Freedom!
Probably they meant to say some
of the police rioted, arresting and tazing.
.
Well there you have it, eh? Now Mr. Soetoro needs only sit back and watch the mayhem unfold as no one can afford to continue their education. By next year they will be lining up in droves to become part of his heavily propagandized Civilian National Security Force.
jk......I hope. ;D
Comparison of nonresident tuition
Undergraduate CA resident tuition & fees: $8,266
Undergraduate non-CA resident tuition & fees: $8,914 + $22,021
The non-CA tuition and fees figure is probably the real, non-subsidized cost of school.

Screw these kids
I guarantee you these rioters were not free-market capitalists. They're a bunch of spoiled brats angry that their heavily subsidized tuition isn't free. Instead of being angry at the Federal Reserve they point the finger at the completely wrong people. These weren't peaceful protests either. No, these are the same people that will be begging to employ state power against the libertarians for "hoarding" food and silver when the real crash occurs.
I'm a UCLA transfer student,
I'm a UCLA transfer student, and just about to graduate, so I've been fortunate to have an inexpensive education for the most part. My parents saved money for my brother's and my educations from birth, and both educations have been completely paid for, debt free, out of pocket. It took hard work and SAVINGS (what a concept!) to do it, but we're out free and clear. Any extra money I'd use for grad school, so that's why I'm not happy with the increases. As a person who understands how the free market works, I know why these increases are happening.
This led me to an interesting observation: the workers at UCLA have kind of latched on to the student protests, because the workers have been in a labor dispute with the university for a long time. A chant I heard today on my way to class was "Students and workers united, we'll never be divided". Ok, fine. Now what signs were the workers holding? Ones decrying the non-living wages they are paid, and that they want more money. Ok, fine. Now what signs were the students holding? Ones decrying fee increases. OK, FINE. Now what happens if both get what they want? It throws the budget into an even worse downward spiral of debt! But do any of these "genius" econ students or poli-sci students connect those dots? OF COURSE NOT! THEY'LL NEVER BE DIVIDED. And that is why they will fail. So much wasted talent.
HOWEVER, I had a conversation with a classmate of mine who allowed me to really lay it all down and explain why fees would increase as a result of prolonged periods of people getting high quality educations for a heavily subsidized price. Well, I think most people here understand the process, so I needn't explain it again. He was very much in agreement with what I had to say and even admitted that he held mainly libertarian views (so why's he registered as green party, who knows?). He even pointed out that borrowing money is not a sustainable option! So at least the gears are turning...
I also managed to walk thru a few newscaster's shots as they were filming, proudly wearing my easy to notice, highly visible, white on black END THE FED shirt. I hope it made it on TV!
I had another conversation later, similar topic, this time with an econ student, though. We weren't in as much agreement. He was saying things like inflation is a good thing, and that there's no problem with borrowing now and putting the burden on future generations. These are the kind of people for whom there is no hope; they can't see the moral hazard in that.
Have faith, people, that not all UCLA students are stark-raving liberals! There are a few of us Bruins that can connect the dots!
That is just WRONG
There are NO "free market capitalists" coming out of public education, but that is no reason to abandon the victims of the crime.
Screw public education.
good point; these young people have not been taught--
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
I was wondering when *it* would "hit" *education*--
:(
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
"Higher" ed is ran by socialists
I tell you what. Even the school of business of my former school taught "social responsibility." Students are taught that businesses have responsibility to take care of social problems. I felt that some tenured business professors there did not believe in free market.
Not sure how it is in a private school though.
Of course schools teach
Of course schools teach this. Look up the original purpose of gov schools, "to create good gov subjects" among other things. A lot of people think the education system is a total failure, that is not the case. The education has been one of the things where the government has actually succeeded in what they set out to do.
Anyone down there handing out dvds and schiff videos?
Sounds like they're going to protest again, we should spread some info. It'll be the best education they'll get out of that place.
They're waking up, we should serve some intellectual breakfast!
good point, exactly--
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
this could be used as an opportunity to teach--
but *I* wouldn't enter a mob like that!
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
That's what I'm always thinking
Where are the patriots giving answers to the clueless. Get them understanding the root of the problem. They are primed for some education. Have you ever tried to educate an average student in a normal college setting? They could careless about the message you're trying to spread. They are too focused on dating, their ipods, the home team, and maybe their next final. These students are ready. Send a YAL and C4L group in there to clean house.
