UCLA Students Riot as Tuition Inflates 32%

It is clear to me that if anyone benefits from a person getting a college education it's that person. So I see no reason why a college student shouldn't have to pay for his education himself, with some modest use of loans, rather than be subsidized by the taxes of working class taxpayers who never got to go to college themselves. (When I went to MIT 30 years ago I paid for 70% of the costs with summer jobs, my parents paid for 15%, and the other 15% was a loan that I quickly paid off.) It is true that college costs have inflated much faster than other prices over the past few decades, as have health costs. But both college and health care are heavily subsidized by government. That encourages padding of costs and discourages creating better efficiencies, so is the reason why the price of education and health care keep going up so fast.

Keep in mind that 80% of what you learn in college can be learned by buying the right textbooks, reading them, and doing the exercises at the end of the chapters. Despite the high costs of textbooks that's still orders of magnitude cheaper than tuition.

I learned a number of years ago that CA had stopped building new colleges, they extended campus, and offered BS courses, but colleges were shrinking despite the mioney being poured in, and prisons were booming. The privatized prison industry has jobs, and I'm sure it's the intended furite for many who oppose war.

Still one of the most affordable instate tuitions in the country.

That is sarcasm for anyone that doesn't get it.

from a community college in California I was supposed to start teaching for next semester. It was only one class and the field of nutrition is in extremely high demand. I figured that the community colleges would be filling up because 4-year college tuition is so high. It was the Dean and he told me they were told to cut back on over 1000 hours of education so they couldn't hire me. I was ok with that because it was only one class but what I had to go through to get hired by these clowns. I had to get fingerprinted and a TB test for teaching online!

Anyway, so not only are they raising rates but they are also cutting the amount of classes. There will be rioting in the streets. Where are these young people supposed to go when the unemployment rate is so high and they can't get an education? Education is the only way out for most of these kids.

California again is facing a mammoth budget deficit and the prospect of more severe cuts to state services, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office warned in a report released Wednesday.

Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor said the state will face a $20.7 billion deficit next year and that the Legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger need to start work to fill that gap "as soon as possible." He also noted that many one-time fixes state leaders have relied on in the past to close deficits are not available. The state will face $20 billion annual deficits through 2015 if permanent fixes are not made, he warned.

The dire news comes only four months after lawmakers approved a controversial plan to close a $24 billion shortfall in the current fiscal year, which began July 1. That plan, signed by the governor on July 28, relied on state worker furloughs, partial closures of state parks, and funding cuts to the California State University and University of California systems and many health and welfare programs.

This is what happens when the government pays for something then runs out of money. All the liberals think its the greatest state then .....bankruptcy. They can't squeeze any more taxes out of anyone. Now the liberals are mad....where is our free stuff? Why is the middle class not paying for our free stuff?

As the government 2 party system destroys the currency and the federal and state governments are forced to shut down massive payment programs and services and more and more people are unemployed and state program cost skyrocket from lack of money and inflation on imports, tax protest, cost increase protest and welfare and pension shortage protest will increase exponentially over the next 24 months....the problem now is that the fascist in government have given the capital and resources to the international bankers and their cronies. Their last option is pure inflation...crank up the printing presses and hand out devalued fiat currency....but our foreign creditors may have something to say about this....

Why anyone would have anything to do with Kalifornia is beyond me; vote with your feet, folks.

I guarantee you these rioters were not free-market capitalists. They're a bunch of spoiled brats angry that their heavily subsidized tuition isn't free. Instead of being angry at the Federal Reserve they point the finger at the completely wrong people. These weren't peaceful protests either. No, these are the same people that will be begging to employ state power against the libertarians for "hoarding" food and silver when the real crash occurs.

Sounds like they're going to protest again, we should spread some info. It'll be the best education they'll get out of that place.
