The Washington establishment suffers a serious defeat
By Glenn Greenwald

Something quite amazing happened yesterday in Congress: the House Finance Committee -- in a truly bipartisan and even trans-ideological vote -- defied the banking industry, the Federal Reserve, the Democratic leadership, and mainstream Beltway opinion in order to pass an amendment, sponsored by GOP Rep. Ron Paul and Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson, mandating a genuine and probing audit of the Fed. The Huffington Post's Ryan Grim has the best account of what took place, noting:

In an unprecedented defeat for the Federal Reserve, an amendment to audit the multi-trillion dollar institution was approved by the House Finance Committee with an overwhelming and bipartisan 43-26 vote on Thursday afternoon despite harried last-minute lobbying from top Fed officials and the surprise opposition of Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who had previously been a supporter.

Grim details how key Committee Democrats such as Frank -- who spent the year claiming to support an audit of the Fed in the face of rising anger over its secret and bank-subservient policies -- suddenly introduced their own amendment (sponsored by Democratic Rep. Melvin Watt) that would have essentially gutted the Paul/Grayson provisions. Banking industry and Fed officials, as well as the Democratic leadership, then got behind that alternative provision as a means of pretending to support transparency while protecting the Fed from any genuine examination. Notwithstanding the pressure exerted on Committee Democrats to support that watered-down "audit" bill, Grayson convinced 15 of his colleagues to join with Republicans to provide overwhelming support for the Paul/Grayson amendment. As Grim notes:

[Frank] urged a no vote, yet 15 Democrats bucked him, voting with Paul. Key to winning Democratic support was a letter posted early Thursday from labor leaders and progressive economists. The letter, organized by the liberal blog FireDogLake.com, called for a rejection of the Watt substitute and support for Paul.

Grayson was able to show Democratic colleagues that the liberal base was behind them.

"Today was Waterloo for Fed secrecy," a victorious Grayson said afterwards.

Special points of interest to me were...

The author (obviously coming from a progressive/liberal perspective) is loath to credit Ron Paul, prefering instead to emphasize the role of the Democrat "wingnut", Congressman Grayson.

You'll notice that he also characterizes the Republican congressmen's support of HR1207 as "hypocritical" and strains to credit as many of his usual "good guys" as possible, as in:

Those progressive advocates' refusal to be distracted by trite partisan considerations, and their reliance on substantial GOP support to pass the bill (as hypocritical as the GOP's position might have been), was particularly crucial -- and smart.

And you probably thought this was Ron Paul's bill.
Whatever makes him happy. I just wish he had enough intellectual integrity to give credit where credit is due.

It is obvious that even as he states that "many of the most consequential political conflicts are shaped far more by an "insider v. outsider" dichotomy than by a "GOP v. Democrat" or "Left v. Right", he is having his own problems letting go of that artificially constructed paradigm.

I think a careful reading of this article reveals a significant chink in the Conspiracy's ability to divide and conquer through their ideological gerrymandering. Keeping the true interests of the people divided between opposing camps has always been an essential part of their strategy.

Having the population as a whole start to recognize that it truly is a fight between us and Them, and that Them is not the strawmen that they have so carefully constructed, has to be one of Their greatest nightmares.

To that end, HR1207 has already been a great success.

Washington establishment suffers a serious defeat

This is a good start for the protection of our democratic freedoms. It is also a good example of why we need freedom of speech in this country and the world. As it is now, the private corporate owners of the media selectively choose what they want you, the viewer and consumer to see and choose, so that they are always in control of how people behave in a social manner. This corporate control encompasses all of our habits, especially during election time, the marketing of political agendas along with all holidays and goods. To help ensure that we have a free press and nation, all news media within the United States should be required to accurately report the daily events of the major committees of our congress, especially the banking committee. If this was a requirement of owning a Newspaper, TV or radio station, then our voting habits would more accurately reflect who we want as a representative and our representatives would be more inclined to represent the views of their constituents

What are the odds that HR

What are the odds that HR 3996, the "Automatic Bailout Bill of 2009", gets modified, or even killed, to let HR1207 go down?

This delay is worrying me...

Any chance currently, to get HR1207 standalone?

Regards

Barney Frank

It should come as no surprise to ANYBODY that Barney Frank is a 100% enemy to HR 1207, and to Liberty in general.

Watch what they DO and not what they SAY.

What has Barney Frank EVER actually done to support auditing the Fed? Did he bring it up for a vote? Did lobby other democrats to support the bill? Did he vote correctly this last vote?

NO, NO, NO. He has sold out, long ago. He's sold his soul to the devil (the International Bankers) long ago. They absolutely own him.

Is there any doubt that every single committee chair is owned completely by The Powers That Be? Every single key position is in The Fed's back pocket.

The main weakness of Ron Paul is also one of his great strengths. He appears to me, to be naive in some cases. Maybe this is not the case. But didn't you get the feeling that he thought (at least he SAID) Barney Frank was supportive of his bill.

Barney Frank is an open homosexual and hard core liberal who has nothing but evil intent for destroying our country's core values of morality, and adherence for the US Constitution.

Ron Paul's a gentleman -- and perhaps is so non confrontational (a strength) and trusting (perhaps a strength) -- that he does not "rat out" the Establishment plants.

I trust Ron Paul and am grateful to God for his courage and presence in Congress, so let's continue to watch him, and follow what he says, as he is the best inside source we have. He is our champion of the US Constitution and the immortal enemy of the central bank that owns Washington DC.

I agree 100% with your

I agree 100% with your point, but...

"Barney Frank is an open homosexual"

...this has absolutely nothing to do with it. Please stay on topic. Tossing comments like these about randomly is a large part of why people are hesitant to listen to the liberty-minded. The true libertarian believes that one's sexual orientation is his or her private business.

Where do we find out who voted for what in the ....

sub-committee.

I have been working on Congressman Driehaus and I was wondering how he voted.

Anybody know the answer to this?

I appreciate Glenn Greenwald's high-quality journalism BUT

he once came out defending Ron Paul and it disgusts me how he marginalized him here. Notice that even though it is Ron Paul's crusade and HIS BILL, Greenwald totally neglects to give him any credit, and hints that "the GOP" was hypocritical in its participation:

"One can count on one hand the number of times that establishment attacks like this fail, but this time -- at least for now -- it did. And it reveals a winning formula: where there is a strong and principled leader in Congress willing to defy the Party's leadership and the Washington establishment (Grayson), combined with leading experts lending their name to the effort (economists Dean Baker and James Galbraith), organizations standing behind it (labor groups), and a shrewd and driven organizer putting it all together (FDL's Jane Hamsher), even the most powerful forces and opinion-enforcers can be defeated, as they were here. Those progressive advocates' refusal to be distracted by trite partisan considerations, and their reliance on substantial GOP support to pass the bill (as hypocritical as the GOP's position might have been), was particularly crucial -- and smart."

Greenwald claims to NOT be partisan...but the only explanation for this omission is that he IS.

I assumed he was rallying his people, the libs and Democrats

to the cause and thus over emphasized Grayson, one of their own.

At this point, whatever works to bring down the beast is fine with me. As it's now bipartisan, that makes its chances all the better. The Dems are beginning to behave like a herd of cats ... beyond the control of Barney F. Besides, let them shoot at Grayson and leave RP alone. What we need to focus on is the fix after the fall. Whoever has the ability to lead us out of this mess, wins the game. That's RP because the Dems haven't had a decent idea about anything for decades.

Disgusted?

I read Glenn every single day, he is my fave. While he may not have given the good doctor the credit you feel he deserves ( and I do not disagree that he absolutely does), Glenn isn't a writer for the Daily Paul which I also read every day. He is a champion for the Constitution and does everything possible to nudge our society back to it. I think you are unduly harsh on someone who is on YOUR side and I urge you to direct your attacks on more deserving foe. There are plenty out there.

I was not attacking Glenn Greenwald the person

and I, too, read his blog regularly (though not daily.) I was just complaining about his treatment of Ron Paul here.

For me to applaud someone for high-quality journalism is extremely rare. In fact, I think Greenwald is the best of the best. I don't love everything he says, and sometimes he annoys me. But kudos to him and, as I said up front, I APPRECIATE his work.

As discussed below...

...Greenwald most definitely IS partisan. And this was obviously a commentary based on that partisanship. Nevertheless, it still can't help but reflect well on Ron Paul. Regardless of how helpful Democrats might have been in this particular effort, there's still no escaping the fact that this is Ron Paul's baby. Always has been and always will be...

Yes, and I think Dr. Paul is happy that it passed with such a

good majority even if he's not given any credit here, which is really kind of comical in it's glaring omission!

Debbie

You're right

I was just so happy with this article until I got to that part....and read the comments where no one is setting the record straight about Ron Paul deserving MOST of the credit. I don't understand why Greenwald did this about-face on Ron Paul, since he once defended him very strongly and very well...the mystery nags at me. Greenwald's good at explaining everything thoroughly, so I wish he'd explain that.

As I've said before

Fwank ith no fwend of liberty.

So what happens on December 1st??

Barney Frank it seems pulled a little stunt. He pretended to be "sympathetic" to H.R. 1207 and to "support" auditing of the Federal Reserve. He agreed to let the bill come before the Committee (perhaps knowing all along that it would be spiked by Nancy Pelosi, or someone else on his own Committee would succeed at blocking it).

To Frank's surprise, the Paul-Grayson coalition held in tact and voted to move most of the original H.R. 1207 forward (I still don't like the explicit qualifiers about excluding monetary policy from disclosure, and giving the FED 180-days, which is 6 months or half-an-entire-year, before any questioning of anything whatsoever at all is allowed).

So what did Frank then do? He took his ball and went home. No further action is to be taken until the magic date of December 1. Why did he do this?

It would seem that this action was made to buy some time, when during this interval, after having watched the Mel Watt attempt to derail the audit surprisingly go down in flames, Barney Frank then huddles together with Nancy Pelosi and they figure out a new "Plan B" way to gut the Paul-Grayson amendmant (by some procedural manuever).

So does anyone know what is going to go down on December 1?

What do we need to do to prevent this amendmant from getting quashed? I do not trust this delay.

Agreed.

I've noticed that we seem like-minded, and frankly, I don't trust the establishment crowd as far as I can spit.

And, I did spit when mush-mouth Bawney tossed out his delay.

If they pull a fast one, there is gonna be hell to pay.

They are waiting until after the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Grayson is jumping the gun calling it Waterloo

This is just the beginning of the fight.

The economy is helping with the battle though.

Overall I liked the article

However, very little credit was given to Ron Paul for this. Did you see this quote "And it reveals a winning formula: where there is a strong and principled leader in Congress willing to defy the Party's leadership and the Washington establishment (Grayson), combined with leading experts lending their name to the effort (economists Dean Baker and James Galbraith), organizations standing behind it (labor groups), and a shrewd and driven organizer putting it all together (FDL's Jane Hamsher), even the most powerful forces and opinion-enforcers can be defeated, as they were here."

He points to the people that made the Bill a success without even mentioning Dr. Paul. He says Grayson is the "strong and principled leader willing to defy the Party's leadership and the Washington establishment???" Excuse me, but you are wrong.

Exactly

I'm sorry, I posted about this exact same thing above...should have read the comments here first.

I noticed that, as well,

and it bothered me.

Context...

The article focused on how democrats supported the amendment.

I do believe Greenwald is a "liberal"...

...whatever that means, these days. In any case, he tends to look at things from that perspective. But thanks to the letdown known as Obama, he IS coming around, at least in some respects...

When he works for "Salon Magazine" it gives a pretty

big hint. BUT, he is a Constitutionalist and ALWAYS writes TERRIFIC articles. He has been MORE than disgusted with the disappearing left anti-war and anti-torture movement, and I believe he HAS noted and credited Ron Paul in the past. I think I saw him speak to the Future of Freedom Foundation on one of their videos. He commented at the time how odd it was for him to be there.... but noted that when it came to Civil Liberties and the Constitution there is much common ground. (I'll try to find that talk)
