It's quite possible that eventually Elin Nordegren could go to prison for her attack on her husband, Tiger Woods.
That's backwards. Tiger Woods should be the one to go to prison -- for adultery (assuming the TMZ rumors are correct). In traditional moral thinking, fits of rage over adultery are somewhat excusable.
By placing the definition of marriage in the hands of the state, and entrusting it to enforce the "marriage contract", we have allowed the state to destroy the meaning of marriage far beyond what allowing gays to be married would do.
The state can retroactively redefine the marriage contract. The most affected, of course, were those who got married before the 1970, only to have the laws changed to allow unilateral divorce, whereby the abandoning spouse is rewarded monetarily. But even today, alimony and child support laws are tweaked, adultery and abortion notification laws changed -- all affecting the marriage contract and all retroactively modifying that marriage contract for already-married couples.
Evangelicals on their anti-gay-marriage tirade are missing the boat.
Now, as a social conservative, I also am opposed to gay marriage. But after seeing what the state has done to heterosexual marriage, I'm opposed to all state "licensed" marriage.

But I understand why you are and I agree with, what I believe your thought is here, that the state, having no respect for "Marriage", has established "licensed unions", which are ultimately beneficial to THE STATE.. both of you "wed the state".
It's one reason I never made got licensed.
And yet, the church works with the state.. some might say, sold out to the state.

I agree with you about marriage licenses, but since we don't really know anything about Tiger Woods and his wife, there's no real lesson to be drawn from them.
Seems to me like Tiger and his wife
would like to not publicize this incident. And I don't blame them for wanting their privacy. But the media will not let it rest, we will be hearing about this crap for weeks.
Another distraction from the issues,

as a victim of secular marriage contract license I agree with you. My divorce lasted 6 years, relentless litigation, the good news, i learned the system. the bad news, It left a horrible taste in my mouth.
I believe in biblical marriage and if I get married again I will sign in the bible with 2 witnesses, but no state church or licensed pastor!! I also quit going to church when i figured out how the 501c3 the church sold out to the gov, they keep silent on many issues so they can be tax exempt!!
