"Where Did That Come From?"
by Rob Sandwell, Thesemindz@hotmail.com

A friend of mine was talking with his girlfriend about marijuana use recently. He doesn't use the product, but he was explaining why he is in favor of the elimination of drug prohibition on moral and practical grounds.

She was deeply and emotionally opposed to the very idea. Drugs are bad. Drugs hurt people. Drugs, and drug users, and drug dealers, are evil. He pointed out that they both drank alcohol, which is far more dangerous than marijuana, and attempted to press her on her position. He wanted to know what the difference was. He wanted to know why she felt the way she did. She quickly became defensive and simply stated that she didn't have a reason for feeling the way she did, she just felt that way.

Think about that.

She didn't have a reason for feeling that way, but she did, and she had a strong emotional attachment to the idea, and that was enough for her.

A young lady I work with the other day was trying to tell me that soldiers are moral. I asked her if it's right to hurt people who never hurt you. I asked her if it's right to do so if someone tells you to, or pays you to. She said no. I asked her what the difference was between that and soldiers. It was at that point that she started screaming at me and demanding to know why I "hated this country so much," and telling me that "people like me" were the problem with the world.

I didn't make any positive declarations. I only asked her questions the entire time, but when confronted with something she believed but had obviously never considered herself, she became extremely emotional and aggressive.

Think about that.

Imagine if you woke up in the morning and suddenly realized you hated some group of people. White, Black, Christian, Atheist, doesn't matter. But you knew you'd never hated them before today, in fact, you'd never even thought about it.

How terrifying would that be? You'd think space aliens had planted thoughts in your head, or some evil trickster had hypnotized you in your sleep. The implantation of thoughts in your brain without your consent is a terrifying thing even to contemplate. And yet it happens to people all the time. It happened to these two girls. And when they were faced with it, instead of reacting with horror, instead of trying to figure out where the ideas came from, they not only ignored the problem, they continued to advocate those positions.

Think about that.

It isn't just women, these two examples just happen to be. I've known people who argued that they felt legality is more important than morality, and even after I showed them how their own actions and lives contradicted that statement, they continued to hold it. I've talked to people who say things like, "there have always been governments," or, "without public schools no one would get an education." Of course, these statements aren't just false, they're also quite silly. It shouldn't take a moment's thought to realize that.

But that's just it. They haven't even given the ideas a single moment's thought, yet they are not only proclaiming them as patently obvious, they are deeply emotionally wedded to them.

Thanks for sharing my article!

Hi. My name is Rob Sandwell and I wrote the article "Where Did That Come From?" Thanks for reposting it here for others to read! If anyone is interested, you can find more of my work at the Libertarian Enterprise, and over forty articles I wrote at,

www.ownyourfreedom.blogspot.com

I'm glad some of you found some use in what I had to say. Thanks.

Government does not exist. It is an abstract fiction. In it's place and under it's auspices you will only find individuals conspiring to commit violence against their fellow man.

My pleasure, Rob!

I do always try to post the GOOD stuff! :-)

Sandwell, you are bookmarked

Now I guess that I have a lot more reading to do! When will I ever get my work done?

Thesemindz~Thank you, for a well written piece!

for dropping in to the Daily Paul! We enjoyed you article and insights! I bookmarked your site!

*Truth is the Enemy
To attempt to speak the truth on any subject of importance requires a deep reserve of determination, for to speak the truth requires that one first sweep away an infinite number of rationalizations, false alternatives, and numerous other failures of logic and the most rudimentary forms of thought -- as well as the endless lies.

On that single occasion in a thousand or a million when a person overcomes these barriers and speaks the truth, he or she discovers an additional, terrible truth: almost no one wants to hear it. This is how we live today: lies are the staple of our diet. Without them, we would die, certainly in psychological terms." ~Arthur Silber

"I think we are living in a world of lies: lies that don't even know they are lies, because they are the children and grandchildren of lies." ~ Chris Floyd

Welcome to Daily Paul, Rob.

Your article gives food for thought.

wasn't it hitler that said

It's good for rulers that men don't think? People take information they recieve at face value and seldom question it? Thus it makes brainwashing easy if know one ever takes the time to "check the facts" Take the supposed Tea Party "leader" pretty Palin., She sounds like neo-con light?? and she's no leader and certainly no leader of mine........ Then again I'm a libitarian and well I don't really need a leader......as I perfer self education and thinking for myself........Question EVERYTHING!!!!!

Complicated issue

I'm from christian territory and am christian myself.
A tremendous amount of us are brainwashed by the state. Quite a few pastors read into Paul's appeasement of Roman rulers as the divination of authority figures in all places even down to condoning slavery. I disagree with that reading.

I have many agnostic and a few atheist friends with which I spend time. Many christians don't.

My point: An atheist should seek out liberty minded christian to sway christians.

Cuz the facts is: Most christians don't give a damn about an atheists' point of view. Regardless of truth.

911 is a perfect example. I

911 is a perfect example. I didn't say it was an inside job (wink, wink), but the last time I checked, there were only 20 people who supposedly did the dirty deed.

"It is better to vote for what you want and not get it than it is to vote for what you don't want and get it." --Eugene V. Debs

When people believe the collective they lose their self.

It is socialism (To Nationalize the Means of Production) when one believes, but for the sake of the collective needs no reason to support those beliefs. We people produce education in all systems… to identify the produce as healthy or unhealthy one would have to look at the derivatives which formed the production of our education. The girls above have produced an inefficient education by forgoing their self and as a result they poisoned their reasoning.

The role of a farmer, in Fukuoka's mind, is an observer, not an intervener, of the natural order in his/her particular landscape. How is that any different than Hayek in regards to Economics?

Great post!

I was just talking with my girlfriend about terrorism and terrorists last week. I said that the reason they are so angry with us is because we impose sanctions that kill their innocent, prop up cruel dictators, build military bases on their holy land, and bomb them. It is for these reasons that they hate us and they use terrorist tactics because they can't compete with our military strength head-on. She disagreed. I then asked why she thought they use terrorism. She said "because they're evil". When I asked which makes more sense--that they react to the cruel things we do to them or that they're just "born evil", she said she thought they were born that way.
My girlfriend is an intelligent, thoughtful, college-educated working professional. I was really taken back to hear her say this. I gave her a copy of Revolution. I hope she reads it and then has a better understanding.

Very, very frustrating

I too, have post-graduate friends with that mindset. I get pro military, anti-muslim e-mails that drive me crazy. I am pro military, protecting our shores but not empire building, big difference. I often fire back something Libertarian for them to muse. Starting to get some positive responses.

He missed the most "sacred" of the current religions...

Political Correctness.

Even though the author seems to be advocating free and fearless thinking as an antidote to the establishment's brainwashing, even he is afraid to go where modern angels fear to tread.

What are the unforgivable sins today? Advocating the legalization of marijuana? A mere peccadillo. Calling for an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? You might even be able to throw a party with all of your buddies after the anti-war demonstration.

No, the REAL intellectual mine fields are laid around the issues of racism, sexism, etc. (If he thought his girl friends reacted vehemently before, he should try questioning them about comparative I.Q. scores of different racial groups and "No Child Left Behind". But of course neither he nor they have ever even allowed themselves to think about such things.)

These areas are so taboo that the establishment news media and academia have worked to suppress whole schools of scientific thought (like sociobiology)and psychometrics (like I.Q.) just to avoid dealing with the "inconvenient truths" about human nature that they inevitably unearth.

If you want an example of the potential power of evolutionary science on political thought you might want to read the article about Natural Law linked in my signature below. (This is what John Locke would have written IF he had understood modern genetics and evolutionary theory.)

But otherwise it was a pretty good article, for a beginner in free thinking.

Statism is the last, great religion.

Because it's an irrational, faith-based religion, it's very hard to overturn with reason. Pointing out its essential immorality, its total reliance on aggression and only aggression, is one approach that works for me in discussions.

interesting

I never thought of "statism" in this way. Interesting.

I'm not convinced that's the right word, though. To me, this is a general phenomenon. It's the result of massive propaganda blinding the hearts and minds of people.

So much that when they are taught the truth that they still can't bring themselves to confess the truth, and instead argue for something that's irrational and without basis.

I agree there are many forms of collectivism

people merge the self into. But generally only statism and religion are taken seriously enough to go out and kill for on command.

Ah.

But this is only a great ploy if it is something you personally believe in, I guess.

As opposed to giving yourself the same challenge.

If we honestly did that, we'd have no religion.

So although this is great in concept, be careful using it. Or you may find that you're a bigger hypocrite than the person you are trying to "educate".

Wow that is a real gem. It

Wow that is a real gem. It ought to be emailed and passed out as a flyer to every person in America.

Geordi: Yes Captain. Well, it's never been done before, but I can modify the warp coils to generate tachyons and then I can use the transporter to shunt them through to the deflection grid.

Piccard: How long will that take?

Geordi: About 15 minutes.

Piccard: Make it so.

Your "questions"

are loaded, suggestive and characterize things in one way, your way, not theirs.

Most people are not desirous of defending their positions from attack. They simply X the attacker out of their world.

If you want to change people views it is far better to build bridges that show common values first.

A story is also much more convincing than cold logic. THat is how Reagan used to do it. He put a human face on his numbers and research.

Thinking they will go home and "think" about it is usually wishful thinking.

Most people run on their feelings, on what they love.

"A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still", and moreso a woman.

you talk a good game michael clown...

but didn't i just read last night in a post of yours that it was useles to try and change your mind about cannabis? cannabis was destructive, you said, it was "evil" and anybody who tried to convince you otherwise was "wasting their time"...

building a bridge to you, in this case, would be fruitless! xntryk1 should have used you as an example in his post as you are, imho, part of the problem in this great country...you can have YOUR liberties but my liberties be damned!

if you are gonna talk the talk why don't you walk the walk?

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Per

Excellent thoughts

but I think once exposed to your line of thinking those ladies may go back home and think about your line of thinking and may reconsider their views. I reconsidered my thinking after listening to Dr. Paul.

the problem is not emotion vs reason

The problem is belief... emotion is simply the reaction to the challenge of the belief... in other words, Denial.

This is why the Super Bowl, I-Pods, war overseas, cable television, church attendance, high school sports and a plethora of other mind numbing activities are so dangerous... they support the illusion and keep the need for personal responsibility and self-examination at bay...

One wants to believe the government has everything in control... One wants to believe that if s/he goes to church every Sunday everything is fine... one wants to believe that simply voting Republican will solve the problem... One wants to believe that his son or daughter is fighting a noble cause...

This is no doubt the root of Ron Paul's unpopularity among the status quo... he is challenging deeply held beliefs and making people uncomfortable... but then again, he's a doctor and doctors are concerned more about the cure than comfort....

It IS about emotion vs reason

Emotion is usurping reason as the basis for decision making in the country and world today. Previously, facts and logic were the basis for truth. Now, feelings and emotions are the basis for 'truth'. It's even possible for me to have one 'truth' and you to have another. Hogwash, I know, but that's the way more and more people are thinking now-a-days.

Beliefs are a part of this. Beliefs can be based on feelings, or on facts. If a person's beliefs are based on facts, a rational person will change their beliefs when presented with new facts. If a person's beliefs are based on feelings, this (irrational) person will not change their point of view based on facts - facts hold no value to that person.

I think the asking of questions can be very effective in getting people to look at where their beliefs are based. Unfortunately, it is also a way of alienating people - you have to be careful when employing it.

Who are you talking to? Are they a rational person - great, then ask them pointed questions that make them question their beliefs. Are you talking to a more feeling oriented person? Then you have to be more careful. Ask questions that appeal to their feelings - that's a lot harder for me because I don't think that way.

Either way, stop talking before you think you should. Few people likes losing an argument, and nobody likes to be pounded into the ground or made to look like an idiot. Be content with planting just one or a few seeds. Trying to 'close the deal' will probably just give the person the excuse they need to write you off as an idiot jerk.
