WSJ Opinion Journal: GOP Can Learn from Ron Paul

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2007/12/lessons_fr...

It's got the usual, he can't win stuff, which we know isn't true because 75% of Ron Paul supporters haven't voted in the Republican primaries before and we are much more likely to turn out to vote than everybody else's supporters who just had to answer the phone to get counted in the polls. Other than that, it's a very positive article.

Can I ask a question????

Why is it that lately everyone including the media is touting the NAU as this "crazy conspiracy theory of a North American Union"?

Let me take you all back to the Value Voters debate a few short months ago.

Do you all remember that most of the questions to the candidates from the several different moderators were about the NAU?

I remember one lady..don't remember name, on the moderator panel, who said the most important issue as the panel saw it was the US maintaining is sovereignty, and actually asked what the candidates would to to keep us out of an alliance with Canada and Mexico!!!!!
Come on people!!!
Yes, it is a conspiracy folks, but it is not a theory.

An "unserious candidate"?

"...his lack of a proactive foreign policy makes him an unserious candidate in today's terror world."

I have to agree with this assessment. If perception is reality (and it is) then Dr. Paul needs to address this ASAP. It is what kept me from supporting him up until a few weeks ago, and it is the biggest thing that keeps my GOP friends from supporting him as well.

He needs to revamp his foreign policy page on the campaign website so that he stops with the "blame America first" ("the war was sold with phony intel") and instead address where we are now and what to do about it (and terrorism) from here on in. To continue to not address this will continue to hurt Dr. Paul.

GO RON PAUL!!!

Let's Reign! (Rev. 5:10)

I agree

If you read Dr. Paul's book, A Foreign Policy of Freedom, you see that he actually has a very proactive foreign policy -- proactively restoring diplomacy, trade, and relations with foreign countries. But, the only thing the media's given him time for is a thirty second rant against the Iraq War and the War on Terror. Dr. Paul MUST counter this by SOMEWHERE emphasizing what he WILL do. He must show how his policies will make us safer without sacrificing our liberty. He must show how he WILL address and handle terrorist threats. He must show how he WILL restore America's reputation for diplomacy. Perhaps he could write a response to this editorial, which otherwise managed to get many things right.

The troll has a point.

The mere concept of "blame America" sounds like something from the USSR, "don't blame Mother Russia, comrade!", next we'll be asked to call each other "citizen" or "patriot".

Unfortunately the party of axing Big Brother now is buddy buddy with the idea of government ruling your life, as American citizens are mere pawns in the game of America, that mere human beings, the people we elected (or appointed) as our public servants "symbolize America".

You know, you don't support the policy of the Secretary of Defense; it's that you "don't support our troops". You blame opportunist politicians who, instead of doing what's right, they prefer to pander to "Cuban Americans", because they are a big bloc of one issue voters, in an important swing state; it's that you "blame America" as if America weren't governed by people (they are flawless angels) and for the people (America's actions are pre-ordained and serve a higher purpose)...

Okay, people are idiots, and a large part of the party of small government have bought into this dribble... RP has to be careful not to trigger the "Mother Russia" mechanism when talking about foreign policy...

Calling him a troll is the best solution?

See this is the grade school shit that hurts Ron Paul. The supporters are also killing the campaign. I'm getting blasted because I insist that the campaign actually hire professionals and step up its game with the advertising...your calling this guy a "troll".
Jesus guys..this campaign is ours to lose and right now we need a clear concise vision...

I think I'll lay it out in my next post...look out for it...
feedback will be welcomed.

I'm a troll...

that is actively involved in standing on major intersections in my urban area (Tampa suburbs) with my other fellow trolls waving Ron Paul signs, donating to the campaign, writing letters to Iowans, and trying to educate as many people as I can about Ron Paul.

It is one thing to criticize my opinion; you are entitled to yours as well (as idiotic as I think it might be), but to label me a troll because Ron Paul and the official campaign are doing a POOR job of effectively communicating his foreign policy and stance on terror is to shoot the messenger.

Grow up people, and realize that our freedoms are at stake. I'm the one talking with my GOP friends (many of whom are active duty military here at CENTCOM, etc.), trying to scour the Internet to find info that I can share with them regarding RP's actual foreign policy/terrorism stance (because I think the one on the official campaign website SUCKS). Like it or not, the perception of blaming America first turns these types off (as it did me).

My opinions. You don't like them, fine, but let's work together on getting RP elected instead of calling names. I think it's hurting him; perception is reality with a lot of these GOP folks who are very concerned about terrorism. Deal with it. But realize it's there instead of playing ostrich and hoping it'll just go away.

Let's Reign! (Rev. 5:10)

Well written and well thought out article

"Compassionate conservatism" was a smart move on George W. Bush's part, maybe even necessary to win. The GOP was dogged by a reputation as the heartless party... "compassionate conservatism" was just that: a way of selling conservative reforms. Tax cuts would help the working poor. Vouchers would help minority kids. Charities would fare better getting people off drugs than government bureaucrats ...

... a wing of the party now arguing that the small-government libertarianism that has defined the Republican Party since Goldwater is not only immoral, but an election-loser. ... book, "Heroic Conservatism," calls on Republicans to give in to big government and co-opt the tools of state for their own purposes.

Yes, how depressing were the Bush years, with Clinton looking in retrospect as the small government president.

... One shame of this race is that for all the enthusiasm the Texan has generated among voters, he hasn't managed to pressure the front-runners toward his positions. His more kooky views (say, his belief in a conspiracy to create a "North American Union") and his violent antiwar talk have allowed the other aspirants to dismiss him..

And I think he correctly describes how Ron can be dismissed so often by MSM by unnecessarily discussing conspiracies. I know, I know. The Conspiracies exist. These politiicians and bureaucrats who in everything they do are incompetent and short-sighted, are -- in Conspiracy areas -- masterminds.

Well, if i have trouble swallowing it after being around Conspiracists for decades, imagine Ethel American hearing it for the first time.

And it's entirely unnecessary... not central to his message of freedom and nonintervention.

... many conservative voters continue to doubt there's anything "heroic" or "compassionate" in a ballooning government that sucks up their dollars to aid a dysfunctional state.

I had worried that explaining the reality of an intrinsically dysfunctional state was too hard relative to the other side's rosey promise of an omniscient, omnipotent state! State as Beneficient God has often won with the masses.

When Mr. Paul gracefully exits this race, his followers will be looking for an alternative to take up that cause. Any takers? .

I wonder why he thinks Ron would exit gracefully before many others, given his passion, his support, and his war chest?
