The good new' days
I was replying to a blog topic on this site and it occurred to me to write that we needed to get back to the "good ol' days". Then it occurred to me that while this country has had it's ups and downs and many great patriots and good proud accomplishments we did not ever have any "good ol' days", not for everyone. The idealist memory of the revolution does not paint the entire picture.
People fled from oppression to the new world and then proceeded to oppress the people they found there and even brought over new people to oppress. When "We the people" was written they didn't really mean everyone but the words they wrote were greater than the writers.
By the time the Civil War was over, the federal government had already suspended habeas corpus, for a period of time, and began to squeeze the people. The last century saw the constitution and our money ignored and abused and we are now paying the price. The "greatest generation" had segregation and began the trend of undeclared wars.
I am a patriot and I am proud of most of America's history. I served my country as a US Marine and I am in no way anti-American but I do not believe all of our flag waving press. We are the first country to use biological warfare (on the Native Americans) and the first and only to use the A-Bomb. We have overthrown elected leaders of other countries to install dictators and we support preemptive wars. We have become the empire our founders fled from and we might prefer the tax burden that led them to throw tea in Boston Harbor to what we currently pay. At our best we are the greatest country in the world but we also have bases in 130 countries and we spy on our own people.
At no other time in our history have we been more ready to live up to the great promise of the Constitution. The founders created something that was bigger than their faults and if the rule of law is honored we could snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The stakes could not be higher. If the wrong person becomes president we could end up losing our sovereignty and becoming national ID card carrying members of the North American Union, with chips under our skin and completely safe from our liberties.
If, however, Ron Paul becomes the next President we could really fulfill the promise of this country. The mandate of the Paul Presidency would make the Congress either fall in line our go home in 2010. We would see the bully pulpit used to free America from the 'Matrix'. Americans would not have to have two incomes to pay for the government and the inflated mortgage. It would not be a utopia but it would at least be ours. Our voices will be louder in county or state politics as we continue to argue about ideas, as free people must do. America would invade other countries with investments, ideas and an example of liberty. We would at long last be "the shining city on a hill", "the land of the free and the home of the brave" and everything else we were taught already existed.
I am sure the British loyalists during our first revolution thought that our fore fathers were annoying and kooks. They disagreed on many issues and the only way to settle the issue was war. Today we can have a peaceful, truthful, revolution. We all agree! Everyone swears to uphold the constitution when they hold office or put on a uniform. If a politician disagrees with the Constitution they should create an amendment. Every sane American must agree on this issue or cease calling themselves an American. No-one wants to pay for oppression by the IRS. Given enough exposure to the unflinching truth of this message, people will understand and agree.
I think we understand this and we feel the need to post comments on polls when we used to not bother. It's why we bring the subject up in common conversation when we would have talked sports or weather. It is why I will volunteer for and donate to my first political campaign. No-one should be ashamed to stand shoulder to shoulder with each other, even if we only agree on one subject - Dr. Paul. We must understand that it does not mean we must agree on all things, just the most important thing - Freedom.
Thank God for Ron Paul!
