Obama's campaign has this - do we?
Yesterday I saw a short piece on CNBC about Obama's campaign textmessaging collage kids on their cellphones. I'm not too savy about how to do this, but the interesting thing is they estimated that a tv commercial costs about (and I may be off a little on the numbers, I don't remember exactly) $75/ new voter, door-to-door canvassing costs about $25/ new voter, and text messaging costs about $1 / new voter. The piece also reported that Obama got permission to "remind" voters to go vote on the day of the primaries... some talking head said THAT was the key which made this textmessaging so effective.
Do we have this, if not, can we get it?

In favor of a free
In favor of a free downloadable ring tone instead. Let's have a contest and a vote for the best, most memorable ring tone and promote that as the "unofficial official" ring tone!
I'd love to hear hundreds of instantly identifiable Ron Paul ring tones coming from our supporters phones.
Bad idea
Don't do it folks. You will only turn people off to RP. It's a creepy thing to do and the idea comes from a creepy campaign. They are telling voters that they are stupid and need to be "reminded". It says it all about the way those people think. The idea is to get people like that out of government and out of our lives.

I guess this hasn't gotten much exposure yet, but Ron Paul has had an opt-in text message service since JUNE!
It's through twitter, though only 576 people have signed up so far.
I've been getting messages for about a month alerting me when he will be on tv and some general messages such as merry christmas.

Check it out and join it if you have free text messaging or can afford a few extra a month.
Thanks for that dfan. I pay
Thanks for that dfan.
I pay per text, and it seems the campaign sends one or two a day. I did add the RSS feed to my homepage though. Here's the RSS link:

For what reason?
I don't see the point. If it's to get new people on board, yes, but how do you do that? Messaging people who are already supporters, with what?
I got my first 'poll' today from the official Ron Paul campaign. It asked a few questions and then who I was going to vote for.
"I don't see the point." I
"I don't see the point."
I do, to remind supporters to get out and vote. You know as well as I do that even the most enthusiastic online supporter doesn't mean a thing if they don't actually make it to the polls. We have different levels of support ranging from those who never voted before to those of us that plan to drag our entire neighborhood. I'm for any measure that improves our conversion rate.
text messaging on cell phones
If it can be done with the WILLING permission of the recipients, it sounds like an excellent idea. I don't know about the specifics but it sounds like the normal prohibitions against "spam" and phone harassment would apply.
I don't see anything wrong with a courteous and brief text to "Google Ron Paul" or something like that, if the recipient is already active in politics or campaign work.
The cost savings and possible recruitment benefits would indeed be impressive at a very important time, when actual Primary and Caucus season is beginning!
PEACE AND FREEDOM!!

Barack's system is an opt-in system, but there are options.
People have to subscribe to the service like propmaster suggested. We do not require this as a group because WE ARE VOTING. there is no question about it. We will not miss our Primaries.
Having said that, there are services that one could use (that are free-except to receive messages) to remind your close friends, that you have brought over to the Revolution, to vote.
You can send an email to any 10 digit cell phone number by emailing it to the 10 digit number @teleflip.com ie 800ronpaul@teleflip.com or 3145550101@teleflip.com
As I said, it is free to send the message but the standard charges apply to the recipient. Test it out on your own cell phone get the hang of the format.

Where is the Rudy Library and the Mitt Library. Has anyone found them? Do we even know if they can write?
get message out with your cell phone greeting
How about this? Change your greeting to a 30 second Ron Paul comercial. For my greeting I said, "Thanks for calling and leave your message after this message," then I record whatever RP message I want to record. Works great and costs nothing.
That is a better idea.
You start messaging people and they are going to wonder how you got their number. At best they will only be annoyed. Don't do it.
Not for me, thanks anyway
My cell phone to me is private. I do not give out its number to just anyone, so recieving text such as this would be considered spam. I want to be left alone to live my life and allow others into my life as I invite them. Does this sound familiar?
However, with this said, I am in the 50+ age range, so perhaps the younger crowd, i.e. college kids, this type of message is ok with them. Or maybe I'm just an old stick in the mud, but I don't care for this idea.
Texting Friends and Family
CPAforRP
How about coming up with a standard text that everyone uses. Text would include something about Ron Paul, when to vote and "Pass this along to all your friends" etc. We could schedule one for every week. I have heard that in China they have actually had huge "scares" due to text messaging because a false rumor spreads so quickly. We would of course be sending a positive and informative message that would come from a friend or family member. I know there are people in my life still on the fence that may be influenced by a text. Especially one recieved the morning and afternoon of the election.
We have got to use this technology!!!
Text messaging background...
I am a computer programmer for a text-messaging company called Red Fish Media. There are different ways to automatically send a text message. One is to use the email gateways provided by each carrier. This is free for the sender if they have access to a mass e-mail program or service. The other way is to use 'real' SMS messaging, which in the open market can range from $0.03 - $0.10 per message depending on your volume. This is a premium service and is much more reliable than using the e-mail gateways.
As for the end users, their costs are determined by the plan that they have. The majority of young people out there receive no additional charge for text messaging as they have unlimited or a relatively high volume of messaging. Many people might complain of being charged per message.
The way the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) has established guidelines to prevent users from getting unwanted charges or text messages. It requires that users fill out a form of some sort to opt-in to this service -OR- that users directly opt-in from their cell phone by sending a keyword to a text messaging service's shortcode. For instance, I might text 'PAUL' or 'VOTE' to 23000 to begin my affiliation with Ron Paul related text messaging.
If anyone would like to discuss this with me, please feel free to call or send an email to me at my office. (305) 538-2731 or jorge@redfishmedia.com

Cost comparison
Door to door canvassing may cost Obama and the other establishment candidates $25/voter, but it costs Dr Paul NOTHING. And door to door canvassing is the most effective form of advertising. I have nothing against using cell phone text messaging to get the message out (especially since Ron Paul supporters are supposed to be the most tech savvy), but $0/voter still beats $1/voter, especially when the free route is more successful.

Viva La Constitution!
This is good tech for reminders
I heard the same idea weeks ago and have the technology to make it happen. I promoted it to the campaign officers here in Washington state (so far no reply).
When we communicate, we need to ask ourselves what's the best medium for the message? Text messaging is good for time-sensitive, simple messages like "Don't forget to ask for time off work tomorrow to vote in the primary!" or "Have you checked to see if your voter registration is active? Deadline is two days away! (link)" However a random "Vote for Ron Paul!!!!!!!" is going to annoy.
I think the campaign must get on board with this. They can use this capability to send text message reminders to those thousands of Ron Paul supporters with cell phones who have registered at the official campaign site. Several of us (me included) have the technology to send out mass text messages, but we don't have access to the crucial supporter data which belongs to the campaign.
The only other option would be to contact (independently of the campaign) meetup members, rally attendees, or registered voters who have provided a cell phone number. However you then run a higher risk of the unsolicited message.
(sigh)
Allow me to be a little childish for a moment and say...
I was promoting this idea WEEKS ago, but nobody seemed to care then.
OK, I'm done.

If I got an unwanted text
If I got an unwanted text message from one of the other camps, I'd want to send them a bill for the annoyance. I don't support this, unless people care to sign up for it on an individual basis.
Depends on what it's used for
If it were used only for the election-day Get Out The Vote effort, yeah, let's do it. If it is used for ordinary campaign-season "junk mail", no, let's not.
I'd be extremely irritated to get text from any campaign, particularly if I had to pay for it. And there is no need. Young people are attuned to this election. Getting a little text on a cell phone would just come off as lame.
Sent a letter to the campaign
Thank you for the great responses...

CALLING
the campaign and getting in touch with the right person does a whole lot more than sending a letter or email. Harder to ignore a real person on the phone.
I agree
I'm a comp. programmer as well, and I write code allowing stock brokers to recieve data and alerts via email and text messages, all done through apache framework (i.e. FREE!!! - I'm sure if Ron Paul investigated the issue, he'd be ALL FOR open-source, but I digress).
not only bump this issue, but EMAIL CAMPAIGN HQ about this. Obama and Dr. Paul are the only two candidate's "for change" - and everyone knows this is a "change" election, thanx to Bush's glorious handling of our country. So we've got to tap into the "younger" crowd that uses text messages prolificly (sp?).
Freedom is Contagious.

How many cell providers charge for receiving text msgs?
There's go to be a way to make it so it doesn't hurt the voter.
free - both ways
can be free for sender (see my reply below), and provided the subscriber has adequate or unlimited sms txt msgs on their calling plan.... it's free for the recipient too.
Not for me and other people I know
It costs me 50cents to send and receive.
again
based upon your carrier and calling plan.
for example: my pda phone has 300/mo free of charge. my cell phone costs $0.15 ea. as I do not have text messages on that device. my wife's phone has unlimited.... and these 3 plans are all even on the same bill.
Necessary!
Texting has shown a 4% jump in voter turnout. That may look small but Dr Paul needs every vote.
Agree
Keep this posted.
this can be done
my company has written software that does this... it is not difficult... nor expensive. In fact I'd love to help RP '08 campaign if they wish.
My customers use this to send out "hot deal announcements", but use for Ron Paul is a much more noble cause!
I can deliver infrastructure, software, and support resources for this endeavor, at the charge of $0.00 per text subscriber, $0.00 per hour spent, and $0.00 towards costs incurred.
Note to corporate, I'm happy to have your techs review my company etc for 'related ties' etc. Also I'd be happy to release my app to you to manage yourself on your equip.
We can have unlimited "groups", so we can send to Iowan's (sp?) Jan 3, ppl in NH Jan 8, and even have a group for delegates, boots on the ground, etc.
Note: It will take approx 48 hrs for me to provision, customize, and be ready for use.
RP '08 will need a privacy policy - as simple as "we won't sell or release your info is a good start", and beyond that they only need schedule their msgs to be sent.

I think this is an idea worth pushing.
And thank you for offering! Let's get this one going people.
It seems to be a great idea
I will still say we need to get the seniors because THEY VOTE. They all vote every one of them. The van shows up at the senior home and runs them to the polls. These people are registered and they SHOW UP very damn time.
The young people don't. Our young people will, I am no the least worried about them, but we need to be on TV because the older folks watch a lot of it.
The above said, I think we should support the text ads if someone can prove they are cost effective.
We want it more than they do so we come up with ideas that will help win.
T
Should have young Ron Paul supporters hit the Nursing Homes
Old people love young people that come to visit - should have a nursing home brigade in Iowa and New Hampshire that visits just before the vote
this is the best idea ive heard yet. great idea, bedr1.
ron paul 2008
are they able to get out & vote?
yes, I think that is a FABULOUS idea! The young reaching out to the old... but it should not be manipulative.... should be in the name of young generation & older generation connecting, reaching out, helping each other over concerns for everyone's futures.
Is there some facility for nursing home patients to vote? I'm sure some are mobile, maybe family/friends take them to polling places. But what about those who are not mobile, or who do not have someone to take them out to vote?
Also - hospitals too. With Ron Paul's stance on medical in hand as appropriate.
This is a great idea.
College kids really like Ron Paul's principles. Mass text messageing would be great.
