Daily Paul Hosting Problems - Site Outages - My Apologies!
Note: My hosting provider keeps telling me that "everything is fine." If you've had problems accessing the site today, or had any of your posts disappear into "page not found" errors (my apologies! I know how frustrating that is!), please post them to the comments section below so I can show them that everything is NOT fine. Also, it might be a good idea to write your comment in Word and paste it into the comment box, as it might just disappear when you hit "submit." Sorry!!! I am working on a solution so that this does not happen again in the future.
Dear Friends,
It has been a frustrating day for me today as the site has been on the blink due to ongoing problems with my hosting provider. This has been ongoing for the past several weeks, but today has been by far the worst day. I have been reluctant to switch providers, since I have been with this one for around three years, and service has always been fine.
However, as we get closer to the elections, it is clear that I need to get the site onto a more reliable platform. If anyone out there has any recommendations for a good VSP or dedicated hosting provider - please contact me or leave the name in the comments below.
I apologize for the outages and the downtime. Believe me, no one is more frustrated about this than me!

Unable to connect to database server
If you still have to install Drupal, proceed to the installation page.
If you have already finished installed Drupal, this either means that the username and password information in your settings.php file is incorrect or that we can't connect to the MySQL database server. This could mean your hosting provider's database server is down.
The MySQL error was: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.
Currently, the username is manystrom and the database server is dailypaul.dailypaul.com.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
For more help, see the Installation and upgrading handbook. If you are unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your hosting provider.

New problems
OK, before I commented it might just be a software problem.
Now I'm not so sure. Earlier this afternoon there were all sorts of problems.
I was getting all sorts of server errors like this:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@dailypaul.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
-----
Also, I got what appeared to be a Drupal error (with the shady little man with the shades).
I had the same problems
About one hour ago (1730 to 1800 Central European time) it was impossible to access this site.
When I reached the site finally, there were only 13 users and 88 guests online.
So few connections and already problems?
How many curious people were turned away?
And I am sure traffic will increase within the next months......
Seems OK now.
.
I am glad I can get to this page and see what my old pals are up to.
By the way... Google news can be tailored to search for, and display, stories relating to Dr. Paul. Many of them have comment sections, but one must register first. This takes a little time while the authorizations go back and forth, but it is worth the small effort.
That way, the posts from respondents appear in the major news sites and may have a little influence. I have fun kicking USAToday in the shins for their staggering presentations of half-truths. OpEd News is another good one, and The Liberty Papers is run by a deranged lunatic who presents mindless fiction as truth.
Whee!
Easy workaround
I don't know why, but every time I get a Page Not Found error I can fix it instantly and get to the page I wanted by removing the "www." from the URL.
Throwing in my 2 bits.
I run a bunch of sites that are PHP and use MYSQL. I recently went through a very similar issue. Static images and parts of the page would show up but not the guts which live in the MySql database.
What had happened is with the increase popularity of 2 sites the traffic grew. Users were being really bad and leaving the home page open and were registered on the site. Looking at stats there are always 600-1000 users logged in. With these PHP driven sites where people register the database is loading up till the point that it crashes. The web site still works but the database is no longer feeding it.
A restart of the database/server solves the problem for a bit and then all goes nasty again.
I looked at MySQL and found that it was showing lots of errors. A quick repair of the database (Tables get corrupted with crashes sometimes) and upping of some memory variables and we purring like a tiger again.
If you have the web interface PHPMyAdmin to look at your database it has a selection "Show MySQL runtime information". That will let you know how everything is running and tell you what variables need to be increased.
Other point that is worth noteing. MySQL does not write errors and the like to logs. By default the setting is turned off.
Your bandwidth is fine. A dedicated server would be a smart move as this site is destined to grow quickly, but it does come with a whole new set of issues to deal with. I have used valueweb.com for 4ish years. 90 ish $ per month. They have a good support department with people to help install, maintain and the like, at a fee though.
Good luck. Good Luck and don't pull your hair out. You are not the first to have these troubles and not the last. Readers are patient and understanding. I sent in a message with my skype contact if you would like to talk it over.
Software CMS problem?
I've gotten several of the "page not found" errors. I *think* I may have (once) had the connection time out.
I'm not as tech savvy as some people, but I suspect the "page not found" errors are not the fault of the hosting provider but likely a software or database issue.
The opposition or something else?
I run W2K on a land-line, so I'm always slow! Even the night of the Ames Straw Poll (700+ I counted once), the system here still moved along! I think Sarcasmo and True Believer are closer to what's going on: some type of DOS or re-routing. At one of my small Meetups, we started having access probs. this weekend, and on others that I visit around the country, systems seemed to really drag and not act right. One of my Members is blocked from anything Ron Paul. Thank goodness, we have ph.#'s/private email. Even then, can't use Ron Paul in subject line. Two nights ago, here at DP, my post and an edit didn't appear, either~no errors or any indication other than not there! I just checked the page; it's there. I made an edit again, it's there. DP site seems to be running smooth right now. Lots of nasty people out there with nothing else better to do, or RP Opposition en force, or running a bit on the paranoid side, I lean this direction:

www.news.wired.com/dynami...
EDIT: oops! replaced w/correct link
Did lose one post
When I selected Preview comment, got nothing for a long time, then an error page (I didn't record what it said).
Response was also generally slow earlier today.
Page not found
I kept getting “page not found†today. For the past few days had trouble getting comments to come up. Really love this site. You keep it so current it’s amazing!
The last few days
the access was extremely slow (I use broadband cable) and after noon (evening here in Europe) almost nonexistent.
everything is NOT fine
For at least the last two or three days I have been getting the following errors, and all of them within the last hour:
Internal server error
Connection timed out
Page not found
Access trouble
At your request, I'm letting you know that I've gotten quite a few page not found errors over the past few days. I'd say it's been down about 50% of the time I've tried to access the site.

a guess about MySQL problem
"The MySQL error was: Lost connection to MySQL server during query."
Could that be the server getting overloaded and taking too long to sort through all the data? Maybe we're talking it to death. :-P

Get active NOW to put Ron in the general election. ronpaul.meetup.com
"page not found" errors
Got a few page not found errors in the past few days, seemed pretty random. Sometimes I could access the main page, but then some active forum links would be the ones with the "page not found" error.
I agree
this site can't afford to go down, this is UNACCEPTABLE.
Dreamhost is CHEAP but SHITTY.
Let me know if I can donate some resources instead. And I know other people can too. ohmyjosh@gmail.com
Computer Network Guru
I'm a highly paid network engineer. I've noticed outages and latency on Daily Paul for about the past 3 days.
Use http://www.serviceuptime.... (at least) and get statistics of that.
Wow
Computer network guru? Highly paid network engineer? Golly gee! Thanks for the highly specialized information. I hate to tell you this, but problems with network latency have been pretty widespread as of late. I can't tell you why, but you probably can tell us.
How about a piece of humble pie after that?
Slow or unavailable all day
The first time I tried this morning, from home, it worked okay, but before I left for work I had given up navigating pages because they were timing out with a variety of error messages including one about installing software and needing a password.
I could not get in most of the day from work, either. Links to your site from RonPaulPlanet did not work. I e-mailed a friend that your site seemed to be having server issues.
Note that when you last had an automatically loading audio file on your main page, that page was very slow to load until it was moved off the main page.
Incidentally, one can "select all" before hitting the preview button, and save this text to the clipboard, saving the pain and aggrevation of MS Word.
Here goes nothin'!

Problems, yes
I was unable to access the site for 2-3 hours this afternoon; the following message appeared:
-----------------------------------------------
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@dailypaul.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
-----------------------------------------------
Then I did get through once, saw this story, and tried to comment; when I clicked the "Preview comment" button, after ca. 60 seconds of "contacting 'http://dailypaul.com'" the message above appeared again.
In addition, since I began visiting the site, a month or two ago, I've noted that nearly every time I go to a DP page there is at least a 5-10-second delay ("contacting 'http://dailypaul.com'") before the page begins to load. I have DSL, and while such delays do occasionally occur with other sites, only Daily Paul does it so consistently. In fact, I've developed a habit of clicking on a Daily Paul link, then going to look at another website in another window rather than wait for the DP page to begin loading.
So I'd definitely say you have server problems.
I've had problems all day...Site NOT fine!!!
Search function doesn't work, site down about half the time, slow as all hell the other half. Maybe it's me, but it seems like it might be a DDOS.
And this is totally off topic except that it's the subject of my failed searchings, but if someone has the URL of the thread about a dude who offered a reward for good Ron Paul videos, can you please email it to jray AT martincam.com ? Thanks.

Traffic is increasing
I think this is a testament to the busy and popular nature of your website -- the database can only handle so many connections and so when it's really busy, it gives an error message.
And here again is AP, noting to readers that they'd better hop on the Meetup contest bandwagon as the game ends tonight before midnight!

I read that on the main page
I read the post on the main page but I had to check in every ten minutes to see if I could access this page to respond. Yes NameCheap.com (I think, them or someone under enom.com.) I'm definitely having connection problems.
'Page Not Found'...
when I tried to get my lunch hour DP fix.
Dedicated
For dedicated (or VPS), check out liquidweb.com
Use Hostgator
I personally have always liked hostgator.com it is relatively cheap and usually reliable. BTW I never have had problems accessing your forum page but the main page I have issues with sometimes.
Hosting provider
Try hosting.com
Too much traffic
The site probably got alot of traffic after being mentioned in an article online, the WSJ or the ABC one, could be a blessing in disguise.
I new something was going on
It took me 4 hours to get on the forum today. I'm afraid the opposition is going to attack this media prety hard from here on out. I am predicting there will be a black out tomorrow around the texas straw poll. It wouldnt suprize me if they outright ban anything on the inernet on the subject Ron Paul. I personaly think we should go so called underground and give Ron Paul another name like a code name for a new forum. Then point people to it by word of mouth for people to learn about Ron Paul. Its one thing for them to take this away from us, cause all of us are going to vote for him no matter what but the new people brought into the fold need a place to learn. Even if they black out the name Ron Paul. I'm not really mad for me im mad for the people who don't know. No matter what folks keep working. They are worried for a reason if that wasnt true they wouldn't be going through this much effort.
As for service providers I use AT&T Its pretty good service, but I would say they would be more likely to be in favor of blacking Ron Paul out they are to big of a CORP. We live in the best of times and the worst of times. Reamember if this goes down (Internet access to Ron Paul) we start taking the message door to door and person to person we don't stop till its over. If they knock us off here take it local (meetup group) get behind any libritarian you can. Start taking them out locally if they dont want us in their party. Then what choice do we have THE TWO FACES OF EVIL! I think not.
Yeah, everything's not fine
I've had some "page not found" errors and even the front page loads pretty slowly. Postings have been slow.
I don't think any extra black-out effort will surround the Texas Straw Poll. They will just ignore the results like they have in the others. They have an extra excuse to discount Dr. Paul since it's his home state.
We won't see new black-out efforts until we start seeing successes that can't be ignored as easily.
Just sent you an email
.
Maybe if you set up a PayPal link and asked each of us for a few dollars you could either get more bandwidth or maybe bribe the people who run the site?
Just a thought ! This site is way too important to wobble.
