Final update
Money has been paid, contract has been signed.

On the morning of the Rose Parade, "Ron Paul for President" will be skytyped 2 miles in the air. Each letter will be taller than the empire state building. You will be able to see it 15-20 miles away.

We've got someone on the ground ready to take pictures and video.

Since the LA meetup group was already planning on doing heavy flyering (I checked their meetup site) this will be a great time to get Ron's name up in the sky. There's also talk of anti-war protesters being there, and those could be Paul supporters in-the-making.

Thanks to all chipped-in on such short notice.

YES, there is discussion of repeating this type of promotion, especially since a member in our meetup already has a PAC set up; however, we're staying quiet about that until we see the results up in the air on Tuesday. The $1,000 we paid for this is unusually low, and more ambitious sky campaigns can be more cost prohibitive.

The annual Rose Bowl parade has been a tradition in my house since I was 10 years old, and one I’ve passed on to my own kids. But this year, keep your eyes on the sky! Why? Thanks for playing.

Ten thousand feet above the action of the parade, a series of five enormous sky “billboards” will unfold with messages in support of the ongoing Writers Guild (WGA) strike. The sky writing banners, created by a series of precision aircraft, are miles long with letters as tall as the Empire State Building. The planes emit biodegradable vapor “puffs” that type out messages that resemble dot matrix print. The message will be visible for miles around. ...

Skytypers Air Show

I checked out the Skytypers web site at http://www.skytypers.com. It turns out the way they write the message is by flying five planes at once with each plane making appropriate dots to write each letter of the message. Click the logo for the Geiko Skytypers for a video explanation.

Watching the video, I realized that the Skytypers are actually a mini-air show with five planes precision flying and also writing a message. They can write any message up to 30 characters. I envisioned them flying over the tailgate crowd the hour before the gates open for the Super Bowl, skytyping multiple Ron Paul messages. In an hour they could probably get in all the major messages.The video even showed them drawing the stars and stripes.

The trick with skywriting or banner towing or blimping is to be where people are outside with not much to do, like waiting to go into the arena. The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year. It is a huge social event drawing celebrities and millionaires. On February 3rd, there will be no bigger event in the whole country.

I would like to see the video of how the skytyping works out on Tuesday at the Rose Parade. If it works well, maybe holdino would be willing to organize another ChipIn to buy an hour of pre-Super Bowl skytyping. If we could present 10 Ron Paul messages to the Super Bowl attendees for reasonable cost (10,000?), I would definitely help fund it. Is anyone else up for this?

1) Sports editor
2) Political editor
3) Local editor who covers the local flora and fauna (assuming you're part of that)

the service does NOT cost $1,000 per flight. This was a special price for this event, since they will be spraying a few other products during the hours of the parade. LA for a day would normally cost $10,000 (that's several banners during the course of the day though.)

The price also various greatly by region. I asked about NH, and the cost became insanely prohibitive.

We have some other prices that we were quoted, that would require the use of one of our member's PAC. Once we see the first banner, we're going to see how it looks and consider future banners. For now, we want to focus on the 23 Million Ron needs!!!!

So you probably have at least 4 or 5 channels in your area that give local news. They like news tips. You just call and tell them you have a news tip for them and they'll be all over it.

Same for your local papers. The contact info is on their websites or on the paper itself.

You can also get this by using the RNC 'write your newspaper' tool at:

So you put in the city and zip code (Long Beach, CA, into the form:

You can use the addrss of one of the newspapers there just to fill out the form:

So you check them all, and write them a little letter. When you press submit, you will be given a choice:

email or print letter.

You can do both email and print mail. The printmail is nice, because you can save the letters to file, and then get each address of each paper.

Then you can send your emails, but I would recommend phoning each paper individually.

I'm not from CA, so I don't know if this newspaper list makes sense and if the RNC tool is that good. It did not pick up the Long Beach Press Telegram.

Anyway, this is the sort of stuff that the blimp folk, I hope, are also doing. If you spend so much effort to do the event, it's really not that much more work to publicize it properly.

the whole key is, they NEED ADVANCE NOTIFICATION to cover the story properly. And on weekends, editors are away from their desks, etc. etc. So you have to get this info to them well ahead of the event.

It would be of interest to both sports editors and to political editors.

Well, you should certainly try to leverage this...

Usually the news desks at local TV stations are starved for interesting news like this and they will jump on it in an instant.

But it helps immensely if they are forewarned, and this would increase the value of the skytyping immensely. It may well be broadcast nationally.
