Registered Republicans vs non-Rep (before Ron Paul)

At our meetup we had a show of hands to reveal the following:

The proportion was 1 registered republican to 15 non-republicans before they learned about Ron Paul.

I was non-partisan.

How about everyone here? Were you a Republican before you got on with Ron Paul? If not, what were you?

Here is an online poll about the same idea. Let's participate!

Yesterday Republican - Getting out Today

I've been a Republican for many years. I went to Caucus for Ron Paul last night. I am going to file papers and get the hell out of that party today.
I completely encourage all of you to register Republican or stay Republican for RP, but I'm just glad today is the day I get liberated from that fascist organization. I've come to realize what a bunch of damn arrogant hippocrits there are in that party and I never want to associate my name with them again.
After your primary/caucus I would encourage all of you to free yourselves and leave that party in the dust - The people in control of the organization will not change. Why would we want to carry all of their baggage around anyway? They are nothing more than Democrats.
Some people need to be brought down to their knees before they start to get some sense.

Anybody have any input whether to go "Independent" or "Libertarian"?

The problem is, the GOP is

The problem is, the GOP is the only place that a libertarian wing can hope to flourish. There are similar efforts to "fix" the DP, but those are doomed to failure because leftist philosophy is anti-liberty by definition.

Which Way: Out or In?

I understand, MotoXDog. I am having an internal debate on that topic.

One side of me says "Get out as fast as you can!" It isn't as though I enjoy political activities.

On the other hand, the Republican Party is vulnerable---ripe for change. We may not have another opportunity to really influence the party (and the future direction of the country) unless we take this opportunity and use it to best advantage.

We should be encouraged about finding each other. Until now, I thought I was alone and I easily persuaded myself that fighting the fight would be lonely and thankless. Now, with the company of so many good people, I don't have that excuse any more.

What will I actually do about my Republican registration and about activism? I'm not certain right now. I do know that discovering all of you gives me hope that things can be turned around...especially if we act together to make certain we are heard in the Republican Party.

Considering how rigged the system is, is there any other effective alternative?

Hope!

These posts are inspiring. Nothing is more important than the cause of achieving liberty in this nation, and certainly nobody should let a political party affiliation be more important than the cause.

I thank everyone here (whether you were an I, L, D, etc.) who is now supporting Ron Paul. I am convinced that Dr. Paul has not only done more for liberty than anyone else in our lifetime, but he has begun the awakening in this nation we've need for so long.

I really liked reading an earlier post from someone who had been an LP member for over 20 years who has now become a GOP delegate and in support of Dr. Paul. That is wonderful! Thanks to everyone sharing such stories, as I find such personal stories to be powerful testimonials for hope despite appearances in this nation.

i registered just to vote

i registered just to vote for kerry. but you better believe i'ma vote for the great dr. paul!

14 Republican out of 52 non Republican before Ron Paul

That's going to surprise a lot of the polls.

The willies?

Aside from some people who don't follow the platform, the GOP is the party of the republic. I don't understand how a Paul supporter can be a Democrat after this. I mean, to Demcrats, government is always the solution, the UN is king, and taxes are not something bad. Did you see Hillary's Christmas ad? Everyone else had greetings but she was putting things on the Christmas Tree that she was going to GIVE everyone, using everyone else's money, of course. Universal pre-K was one, and as a teacher THAT gave ME the willies!!!!!!!!!!

This is why I've always

This is why I've always voted Republican, as the lesser evil. Still, I think it's time everyone woke up and realized that the Republican Party has been taken over by neoconservatives, which are the offspring of communists. They are effectively the same now, except (dare I say it?) the neocon-Republicans are starting to scare me a lot more, with their looming police-state mentality.

The one area where Republicans still trump Democrats, however, is on Supreme Court nominees. The Republicans tend to favor strict constructionists, whereas the Democrats love those activist judges who legislate from the bench and decide arbitrarily which parts of the Bill of Rights we shall be allowed to keep -- for now.

This is why we need a libertarian movement in the Republican Party. The Libertarian Party will never amount to anything, due to endless bickering and infighting, and the Democrats will never abandon socialism (their greatest success, FDR, having been a devout socialist), so it's up to the libertarian wing of the Republican Party to save America from itself.

If the Republican Party doesn't change...

I don't see how we can be Republicans either.

Demo vs Repubs vs Libertarians we seem about 30/30/30

I havent gone and counted everybody but it appears we are pulling about 30/30/30 from all three parties...

Lifelong democrat, now a republican for paul!

break the left/right paradigm and realize you're being manipulated
~ alex jones

Democrat 20 yrs, then Libertarian, now a RP Republican

Fortunately, I have seen the light.

I voted for Dukakis. Really.

How embarrassing.

Democrat

Brainwashed by my parents and was too lazy to change...until the good doctor cure my lethargy.

I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes,
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards

Was an Independent (Libertarian-leaning)

Now I'm a Ron Paul Republican.

ONLY Ron Paul.

None of the other GOP candidates reflect me AT ALL.

Been a Republican since I

Been a Republican since I was a wee lad! I am 25 now and have watched my party become hijacked by big business and corruption. I didn't like any candidate till I heard of Ron Paul!

So Disgusted with choice between evil...

and EVILER that I hadn't even been registered to vote for pretty close to the past 25 years!!!

The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle;
pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and
worship without sacrifice: Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi

Previous Non-Republican

Past four presidential election!!!!
I registered Republican for the freedom message!

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Registered republican

voted Constitution Party in 00 and 04

24 year voting Republican in

24 year voting Republican in the house.

GOP

I was a "staunch" republican. Voted for Bush in 00. It still plagues my conscience. Voted a straight Libertarian ticket in 04 and 06 as a matter of principle. RP fan for 2 years. Saw some of his speeches on C-Span, and was very impressed.

12 out of 42...

12 out of 42 if I didn't count wrong.

20+ years as Libertarian

I voted for Dr. Paul in '88.
I've run locally as a Libertarian.
I've changed my registration to (for the first time) rrrrrr..Re..pub..lican.
(Yeah, I did it!)
Ready to run now for delegate, and hopefully a trip to Minnesota!

The meetup group has folks like me, along with R's and D's, along with
the NEWCOMERS (they're the best!)

I applaud you!

This is what we need--so glad you're a GOP delegate! You got my attention when your headline said 20+ years as a L. And now you're supporting Dr. Paul. Thank you for sharing this. I do not understand why any libertarian (in the party or not) would not be supporting Ron Paul. Took me a while to come to this decision--but after watching Dr. Paul speak and reading his columns and his voting record--I am convinced no one else in the political arena in our lifetime has done more for the cause of liberty. Thanks for sharing of your support for him, too. And thank you!

I also have met some of the best people in the RP groups...now this is what liberty is about.

but as they say, we'd take a bullet for ron paul!

independent

I am still an independent. live in GA ( open primary)

what party?

I was raised a republican, and remained one for over 30 years, then became a democrat due to trashing of the environment, and have become a republican again due to Ron Paul, and because I believe freedom is more important than the environment now, and also don't believe in the intitlements the demos give. When the election is over, I will re-register as an Independent.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety, and ultimately will have neither."...... Benjamin Franklin

Same

We have 2 registered republicans, 2 independents and about 10 democrats. We live in Ohio and have an open caucus.

I voted Democrat in 04 and

I voted Democrat in 04 and 06, but I've been realizing over the last year that I am republican (republican talk radio + the libertarian movements) and I was going to vote for dennis in the primary because of the war, until I heard Ron Paul of course - but I will probably stay independent (lib)- but at heart I am a republican

Rich in NH

Yes, Repub for about 10 years

I've been registered Republican for about 10 years

Before that I was Democrat for about 15 years or so. Bill Clinton and the Monica Lewinsky fiasco (and the Dem's response) cured me of that error in judgement.

Same Here Repub. for Over 10 Years

Voted for Bush the first time. Refused to vote for him the second time. Was not going to vote this time until I heard of Dr. Paul.

exactly my case!

Bush got me the first time, Badnarik the 2nd, would have not bothered except for Ron Paul this time.

add another 1

I never registered Republican before, I just felt it wasn't needed until now.

2 in 1

Apathetic 32 yr old. I had never registered to vote until October 2007. I am now registered and a Republican thanks to Dr. Paul.
Had I been registered to vote since 18 I would have most likely voted Dem.

My wife switched from Independent to Republican for Dr. Paul to vote in our primary as well.

Republican --> Libertarian --> Republican

I voted for Reagan and Bush Sr. But after the NWO statements and actions, never voted for a major party candidate again. While some might say that I "wasted" my votes on Libertarians (including the late great Harry Browne...whom I was fortunate enough to meet and sit next to at a private fund raiser.), I have ALWAYS voted my conscience, and will NEVER apologize for it. I have know about Dr. Paul since becoming a Libertarian, I have always loved his principled politics, and always considered him to be a Libertarian in Republican clothing. No matter, I have learned that it is really more about the person, than the party.

Republican

Always considered myself a paleo-conservative. Registered Republican since I was 18. Only voted in local elections. Have been disenchanted since the Republican takeover of the House, Senate, and then Presidency, and the subsequent failure to get any true conservative principles accomplished. They sold the Republican Party down the river. It was horrible to watch.

I stopped caring about politics, realizing that they are all liars and that we would keep losing our liberties year after year no matter who was in charge.

Well, because of your fundraising drive on Nov. 5th, I found RP, and now he has restored my belief in political participation. This movement truly is a second American revolt and it is a honor to be a small part.

I'm a party switcher...

...because the great crooked state of florida uses us, so i use them back.

recently, however, i switched from democrat to republican.

independently minded, atheist, huge sound money fan and civil liberty fan. as a former army captain, i think our exit from the just war theory is unAmerican and tyranical.

Lifelong Main Stream Republican

Registered GOP in 1972 when first eligible to vote. Only voted for two Democrats at federal level since then. Have not voted for a GOP presidential candidate since Reagan. Looking forward to votiing for GOP nominee Paul in November 2008.

Libertarian

... in Texas

In the same boat---

Independent, but libertarian leaning voter, 22 yrs old, Plano.
I vote on the candidate and campaign, not so much the letter following their name on the ballot...

R's, D's, L's, I's etc mean nothing when the candidates all begin to speak the same.

-jared-

When one person can initiate war, by its definition, a republic no longer exists.

Libertarian Party forever...

I haven't voted GOP in forever! Fortunately, I'm in Texas and don't have to register. Unfortunately, I can't participate in County LP Caucuses either. Oh well.

Republican to Libertarian to Republican

I was a Republican until late in college when I turned into an LP member. There was a time where the LP party was no longer considered a party in MD, so then I was an independant.

I was "NPA"

Which in Florida means "No Party Affiliation." I hated politics & politicians and I've always thought the government spends too-damn-much. Before that I was a partisan Libertarian, but I gave-up on the LP in the late '1990s due to ballot access laws. (Take heed, those who think we can afford to lose the Republican Party primary!!)

PS Good luck, Iowa RP supporters!!

Registered as a Republican since I was eligible to vote. However, other than local elections, I have never voted for a Republican...this will be the first time voting for a republican candidate for president and in the primary.
