I think its pretty obvious why the Blimp is staying in the South. You can fault the organizers for not doing enough research in to the realities of flying a Blimp in winter conditions, but you could fault yourself for that too. They didn't know much about Blimps, soon found out the NE and Iowa weren't practical destinations, and changed plans accordingly. It sucks but it is what it is and with SC and Super Tuesday on the horizon, their current flight paths will start making a lot more practical sense. I think showing up for the Bowl Game was a great move.
Personally, I'm a little annoyed with the blimp project. The blimp has been in Florida for about 10 days now. It's currently hovering around Orlando.
Florida is important and all, but we were paying for a blimp that would go to New England, New York and Iowa. This change was not communicated to us very clearly. Personally, I don't think a blimp in florida is worth 400k/month. I've given nearly 400 bones to the blimp and I'm certainly not donating anymore.
Floridians are ALREADY VOTING now that absentee voting restrictions (you used to have to lie to the state to get a form) have been relaxed. I voted about a week ago for Ron Paul, and various other FL voters' counties are mailing their absentee ballots to them. The Blimp is getting fine coverage, and neocons are whining-incessantly about it for added entertainment value. It's worth more than we've paid for it in publicity so far, and the ride's not over yet. How can that be a bad investment??

Actually, Florida is fine. Would I prefer NH? Sure. Weather prevents that, and I knew that the day they said they would be launching a blimp for NH. Not going to happen. Iowa, same thing, and in fact they said that from the get go.
New York though? No way. FL is at least an early state, with a ton of people that seem somewhat interested. They are arguably the most involved meetups in the country as far as statewide. From what I know of New York, though I am not there now, I lived there for 5 years, on LI and in Westchester ... that state is going to be VERY hard to win.
Reality

Florida is a great place for the blimp to be!
Florida is often a make-or-break state. It is very contested.
And it is huge territory. So 10 days in Florida is nothing to speak of. 10 more would be no problem at all, in my book.
FUND THE BLIMP. It doesn't fly without us.
