Charts for Tonight!
A timely post for Campaign HQ BEFORE tonight's 1 Hour RP program. Are you listening? Don't let RP go before the cameras without some charts to emphasize his critical points!!! America would be in HORROR if they saw charts like this one. Anybody remember the impact that Ross Perot had with his charts??? It works.

That dang Bush!
An option
Our first solar panels will be used in a solar power station in Germany," said Erik Oldekop, Nanosolar's manager in Switzerland. "We aim to produce the panels for 99 cents [50p] a watt, which is comparable to the price of electricity generated from coal. We cannot disclose our exact figures yet as we are a private company but we can bring it down to that level. That is the vision we are aiming at."
He added that the first panels the company was producing were aimed for large- scale power plants rather than for homeowners, and that the cost benefits would be in the speed that the technology could be deployed. "We are aiming to make solar power stations up to 10MW in size. They can be up and running in six to nine months compared to 10 years or more for coal-powered stations and 15 years for nuclear plants. Solar can be deployed very quickly," said Oldekop.
The third wave of PV, now being developed by firms such as Nanosolar, can print directly on to other materials and does not use silicon.
Well actually...
The cost of a kilowatt hour is about 6-8 cents from a coal plant and about 50% more from a nuclear plant.
Coal plants take ~4-5 years to build a 600-1000MW single unit.
Nuclear plants take about 10 years (because of federal regulations and inspections)
There was a guy on the discovery channel last night
who lives in New Mexico, and he's developed a solar station that grows algea in a series of thermal panels that really looked promising.....no kidding. The guy was smart, and knew what he was talking about. The ultra high density algea fluid was potent enough to be combustible ( I think that was the story )......but his final summation was that if his system was implemented on 1/10 of the land of New Mexico (which is a lot of land, no doubt) it would produce all the liquid fuel to run our transportation needs. Now that's ingenuity, with no corporate sponsership, or government money. Wouldn't it be nice if our Gov't focused on solving ONE problem at a time.....pretty soon we might run out of reasons to go to war.

Good luck. RP forever.
Just Say No to Charts
Charts remind me of Ross Perot and all he got was 17%. I want to win, not bore people with charts. If he came out with charts the MSM will do a Dean and Perot on him. Please Dr Paul, no charts!
Not really
Perot was polling highest among all canidates, he then dropped out. He said his family was threatened, no one believed him (its probably true, but who knows). He then reentered the race branded as a a dropout and a nut, and still got 17%
I think some people miss the point
The point is that most people don't "get" economics. You start talking about the fed, fiat currency, etc.and their eyes glaze over and they switch the channel to the All-Brittany Channel (faux news). Like someone said in this thread already "a picture is worth a thousand words". Since Dr. Paul isn't getting the chance to say a thousand words (or even 100 in most cases) He HAS to get his points across and charts will do this.
While this particular chart seems to have some people up in arms because they don't want to spend the money on energy research either, the principle is the same. How about a chart of GDP vs. debt, value of the dollar over time, cost of basic items like bread milk and gas in dollars vs. gold over time. We have to wake up Americans and charts have the shock value to get people to listen to what Dr. Paul is saying. As far as ridiculing him - they are already doing that! Have you seen the debates? Not only are the other candidates smirking and giggling, but the MSM makes sure they get all of their reactions on camera. We have to break through the B.S. If you want to see a good example of some effective charts, try these. http://www.youtube.com/wa...
if what you say is true then
if what you say is true then there is no reason to even worry about this country... this is my greates fear.. if Americans have thier heads so far up into the unknown recesses of thier bodies then whats the point.. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE TIME TO STUDY AND BE INFORMED! The public being uninformed is why this nation finds itself in the terrible situation it is in! WAKE UP FOLKS! Voting for socialists and communists the past 80 years has killed us!
Well said
Americans need to realize that personal liberty is COMPLETELY dependent upon financial independence. Not educating yourself on economic issues defaults the control of your money flow to those who have spent their time learning how to manage the money of others...namely bankers. And he who controls your personal economy controls your personal liberty. What America needs is not only a shake up, but a wake up...or all of our hard work will have been for nothing, even after the next 8 glorious years of the Ron Paul presidency!
Ignore This Red Herring!
Charts, yes.
Pouring taxpayer money down a rathole of special interest tapeworm psuedoscience parasites, NO!
All this talk of electricity costs making solar viable -- what do you think solar cells are made of? Sand and ENERGY. They make sense where they make sense, and nowhere else.
Anybody that wants alternative energy, go out and invent it, you'll be the richest man in the world. As for me, keep the taxman's gun out of my belly, please!
Please educate yourselves before advocating this stuff.
Wow
This is great. Can I use it?
Charts I would like to see
The real value of the dollar/ How much we are borrowing a day from foreign countries/ When Dr. Paul said the gold and oil compared against the dollar.
Best graph
I personally have converted many people using this graph,,,,when you find something that works USE it
The Graph's Message is Wrong
All the bars on this graph should be at $0, there's little point in comparing them.
No its to the point the war is oil plain and simple
We could have multiplied spending 100 times on solar or nuck. and had an answer but no were still attempting to push a bad angle,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
but the free market and
but the free market and business are the ones who should be studying this.. the federal government should not give 1 dime! all that iraq money come from the printing press... can't print money to find new energy.. the private companies should be doing that ... the constitution does not give the federal government the authority to use the public treasury for this stuff!
There is no "good" angle
We could have multiplied spending 100 times on solar . . .
Your response makes my point clearer than my original post. It's not be that we "could have spent" it on other alternative energy, it's that we should not be spending it on energy [or Iraq] whatsoever, as it's unconstitutional and doomed to failure.
He should have charts. A
He should have charts. A chart of the national debt, etc. However, a chart showing the expense of Iraq vs how much money the government spends on energy research would not be included since Dr Paul (nor myself) believes the government should be involved with spending tax dollars to research alternative energy. The Free market should make that determination. Just think of the waste that has come from corn based ethanol research
The charts worked for Perot
The charts worked for Perot because he was the first one to do something like that in a big way. People loved it because he was speaking to them in a way they could understand, and he seemed to know what he was talking about. But now, Perot and his charts elicit chuckles. If Ron Paul did this, he would *immediately* be compared to Perot, and the chuckles would follow.
If you think the other candidates were crass in the ABC debates, just wait until they have pictures of Ron Paul and His Silly Graphs to point and laugh at for the cameras. Congressmen use graphs on the House floor all the time; it's a great technique, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that Paul would become the butt of jokes.
He can make the same points by just reciting the facts. Anyway, charts are not his style.

The opposite of freedom is slavery; if I am 99% free, then I am part slave, which is like being "a little bit pregnant." Freedom versus slavery is a zero-sum game.
Exactly right, no Perot comparisons please. Powerpoint, maybe..
Perhaps using Powerpoint (Apple's Keynote, more precisely) a la Al Gore would be an acceptable way to help explain his more tricky points. This would avoid the Perot association problem.

Alternate power
Conventional electrical costs are raising to be at the level of solar very soon. Solar power is experinecing rapid gains in technology, it is becoming cheaper and more productive. I saw a comparison in late 2005 I think, that showed the money spent on the war at that time would be enough to put one half of all residences in the us on wind power. Imagine, your electric bill cut in half ! By now it would be enough for 3/4 of all houses I would guess. Not that Ron Paul would use the government to build wind power, but we could do it ourselves if not for all the war spending.
I calculate that would allow the purchase of enough solar
to produce 20.4 billion kwh
However there are much more efficient and cost effective ways to produce energy, from solar thermal to wind, magnet motors, geothermal etc.
or consider this
with a trillion dollars we could buy about 333 billion cfl bulbs. which would reduce our electricity consumption by 66 billion kwh
or
34 billion kwh of wind power
of course these are retail prices. I assume it would be cheaper if we were buying a billion of them
or (and get this)
25.5 million plug in electric cars like the General motors EV-1 which was on the road and available to lease in 1997. this is about 10% of the passenger cars on the road today
try this
Price at .99 per watt
Solar < Nuclear < Coal?
thought that was backward considering current technology and regulation? Oh well, Go Ron Paul!
Solar Power is Expensive
That chart seems a bit off about the solar figure. It is way expensive to try powering your house using solar power.
No its not
Check ot nanosolar.com
Ron Paul should have started
Ron Paul should have started using charts and numbers to explain his positions a long time ago. I think he would have converted many more by now.
No charts, or..
...at least very few charts. IMO, Dr. Paul just needs to talk to the people and explain his policies without getting overly mired in economics. He doesn't need the comparisons to Ross Perot at this point, and he has powerful major platform points that differentiate him from all of the other candidates in both parties and inspire confidence!
Namely: government for/by the people, obeying the constitution, reversing the damaging policies of the Bush administration, shrinking the Federal government/spending, humble foreign policy, ending the War, increasing military use for defense instead of nation-building, and most importantly, taking steps towards preparing for and mitigating the impending economic crisis.
He can communicate with the people as our president and explain where we are and the bright future we can have with a return to our American roots.
Cheers,
P4P
Holy CR@P! Has anyone
Holy CR@P! Has anyone figured if you took that same amount of money and bought solar cells how many Kilowatts the government could produce for free?
No Free Lunches
The government wouldn't be producing solar power, as you say, for free. The government can do nothing for free. Free are only those things that are found in a state of nature, unworked and unaltered.
Anything of value only acquired that virtue because some person(s) used mind and bodily effort to create it. Individuals produce wealth; the government does not. Government can only take wealth from the individuals that produced it.
great idea
This is a great idea. I even like the scale. Dr. Paul could throw it off the end of the podium and let it unrole. Don't forget one showing what has happened to inflation since 1913. Prior to 1913 there was no inflation, except for the war of 1812 and the civil war. Even then prices went back to normal.
How about one relating the price of gold to oil and dollars to the price of oil like he mentioned during the ABC debate.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Can some of you guys close to the campaign make this happen.
Liberty & prosperity at home and peace abroad.
That is hilarious!
But seriously I don't know what it will take to get people to understand the economy, I remember Ross Perot had tons of charts and that gave the other candidates (and SNL) a chance to ridicule him. I think his explanation of inflation and costs that he presented to Blitzwhore earlier CAN be understood if RP would just have a chance to speak on ONE subject for a few minutes. Maybe the Town Hall tonite will give him the opportunity, hopefully questions from those present tonite will be more POLITE (as Ron is) than the "old media" commentators.
Off topic: Has anyone experimented with using spray foam insulation to do LARGE outdoor lettering?
Off topic, but spray foam
Off topic, but spray foam insulation like "Great Stuff" is really, really nasty to work with. I wouldn't recommend using it unless you plan on using gloves and throw-away clothes. Cover your hair, too. It's REALLY nasty to work with -- sticks to everything! And nasty to the environment and your lungs if you breath any of its vapors in. Be careful if you use it.
That Might Not Be A Good Size For TV ...
Change the scale or something. A Good chart would be a 4:3 ratio on poster board. Another good chart would be the all time CPI chart. I've got one here, I've seen it on YouTube too ... runs pretty flat from 1787 to 1913, then it starts climbing, in 1933 the growth starts to accelerate, then accelerates again in the 1970's. It's pretty alarming to see virtual zero inflation for over 1000 years, then after they create the Fed, it takes off like a rocket.
perhaps
he could do it special for youtube, facebook, myspace, etc.
The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny. James Madison
Putting Iraq in perspective
I think another chart would be causes of death for Americans and their numbers and then compare that both to deaths by terrorism to illustrate the fact that we are spending billions on a war while thousands upon thousands die every year as a result of diseases.
The CDC statistics show that 8 out of 10 of the top causes of death in this country are from diseases, with the other two being car accidents and accidents around the home. The number one cause of death is heart disease (about 1 million people a year). Terrorism on the other hand doesn't even register.
Another good chart would be to compare our infant mortality, life expectancy, debt, and education rates with other developed nations (a report was done not too long ago, and the US really didn't do so well). That would drive the point home that this ridiculous war is draining essential resources from our country.

Ron Paul is truth, and the truth will set you free.
Speaking of Iraq.....
Here is a December, 2007, article by Karen DeYoung at the Washington Post, regarding how our presence in Iraq affects the violence there.
http://www.washingtonpost...
"Iraqis of all sectarian and ethnic groups believe that the U.S. military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them, and see the departure of "occupying forces" as the key to national reconciliation, according to focus groups conducted for the U.S. military last month."
Ron was right!
Good article Feebs, it's
Good article Feebs, it's amazing what influence the media has on so many of these sheeple's thoughts.

wow. frightening. (i also
wow. frightening. (i also thought of the al gore example, which was very effective)
If I wanted to make it look better from a neo-con perspective
I'd change the y-axis to a log scale.
But the best thing for RP
Would be to have it on a LONG scroll, and be prepared to deploy it over the podium! ;) The problem is, I don't think the government should spend money from taxes on ANY of that stuff because we should just let markets decide, but I'm a radical libertarian who thinks the CIA got-away with smuggling blow, so what do I know? ;)
JMR
lol ...
I am picturing AlGore's movie ... the global warming one ... Did ya see it?
Anyhow, the supposed big moment in the movie was when Big Al got on a cherry picker to show a chart very similar to the one you have here ...
Man that would make some good television, wouldnt it? :)
Someone should come up with a chart how much the
FEDERAL RESERVE BANK so far earned on the Iraq war.
Please anyone who is good with charts and numbers should show that to the HQ before airtime tonight.
