I have been watching the Republican candidates for several weeks now and I noticed something during the NH Republican debate and was wondering if anyone else noticed. RP has been called "flakey" and "a nutjob" by many in the media and others in politics. But it seemed during the debate (and not until he got 10% in Iowa) that these other GOP candidates started using some of this "nut job"'s catch phrases. I haven't heard a single one of them (until the NH debate) use the word "constitution" or "welfare state".. which are things that RP talks about all the time. I thought it was so interesting that they all tried to make him look like he was crazy but yet they were picking up the buzz words that he uses. Seems to me that his 10% showing told his competitors that people like what he is saying and that, without making him look credible, they had to somehow have that same message... I found it infuriating. The biggest violator was also his closest competitor in the Iowa caucus results. Just me? Anyone else notice? I will be listening more closely in the coming days to see if they continue to hijack his message.
Not in audience. It was on a public access channel here- MCAN.org- which is channel 23 via my Comcast cable (not digital).
It had a horrible reception in my home- buzzing noise which drove me nuts but of course I watched the whole thing. :) I believe a good number of residents in Manchester watch this channel, especially the older, 55+ population. I only hope they had better reception in their homes than I did.
I was quite upset that this did not make it on the streaming internet venues, as it would have reached far more people. But at least the campaign got it on YouTube within a couple hours!
is a blessing in disguise this was Ron Paul at his best and the audience was overflowing.
Seeing Mrs. Paul, Barry Goldwater Jr this is something you would never have seen on FAUX or like ABC last night, they showed everybody's wife except Mrs. Paul this is the classiest woman in politics.
Great job campaign have more of these in thed future, Please !!!!
I am not sure why someone gets so critical like it is their job. Ron Paul is not God, that's right. So, he is not perfect and will not perform to perfection. So, get over it. I loved tonight. I could see that their were lights coming on for people. The man that asked the question about Israel was so surprised and enlightened at the answer. He had never heard this before. People need to hear that answer. They need to hear all of this. It isn't too complicated but tells the important things that people needed clarification on. Even if people didn't understand everything he was saying he communicated effectively that he knew what he was talking about. They saw that his positions are well thought out and not just thrown out there to be popular.
Now, someone please tell me how I can copy this onto a CD. I would love to pass this around or even get it shown on my local Cable station.
What a great program! I agree that the audio needs to be better. He needs to be in a bigger auditorium type room, but there's always next time :) I wish everyone that was voting had the dedication to watch this whole program, they would all be Ron Paul voters.
Health care: C+
Main points seemed to be that
1) Costs going up due to government involvement (for example, I had a benign cyst removed from my face 2 years ago, and due to government regulations, the procedure was done in what appeared to be a fully staffed OR with 2 nurses (outpatient OR). 20 years ago, this would have been done by the plastic surgeon in his or her office with a single prep kit).
2) General devaluation of the dollar also driving up costs
3) Malpractice fears increasing the costs.
4) With technology, costs should fall, rather than increase
5) With the money we save in foreign entanglements, we have more to spend at home (but then were is the savings going to come from to get rid of the income tax?).
But you have Romney, who wound up covering a lot of people with insurance in Massachussetts, and the fact that in most developed countries, some form of generalized health insurance exists. It may bankrupt the U.S., but so far it does not seem to have bankrupted Canada or many of the European countries. Something other than "just leave people alone, let them keep more of their money" is required to have a saleable candidate, I believe.
Foreign Policy: B+/A-
On foreign policy Dr. Paul was fine. Talked about McCain's 100-year war, and moral, constitutional, and economic arguments against the war.
Monetary policy and the Fed: B-
On monetary policy and the fed, he was still not too clear. It's still not completely clear to me if, for example, we could run a balanced budget, if the Fed would continue to be bad for the country. Is it the lack of balanced budget, or is it the Fed, or is it both? If it's both, how is the presence of the Fed exacerbating an unbalanced budget (other than the fact that the Fed makes it easier to allow deficit spending). But is this really so? Can't we just borrow the money if we need it? He did make the point of Fed secrecy, and Fed decisions that may benefit interest groups. But all of this is done without a lot of clarity or specific examples.
I always thought that, if the government needs 100 billion dollars, they go out and sell 100 billion worth of Treasury bills.
So it's not clear to me how this process is different if (a) we're on the gold standard, or (b) we're off the gold standard with the Fed.
And I've been following Dr. Paul for the past 4 months. So either I'm not that smart, or Dr. Paul has not succeeded in explaining this well. (or both may be true).
The ugly truth is, that the true cause of the impending U.S. bankruptcy is not the defense budget, but entitlements, which will ultimately dwarf defense spending. Of course no one, even Dr. Paul, dares to talk too much about this, since it would be political suicide.
The point about the CPM underestimating inflation and the damage it does to people with fixed incomes was made.
Immigration: C+
Sort of rambling and confusing. Didn't mention no amnesty and abolition of illegal immigrant birthright citizenship. Said it was an economic issue, but without being very specific. Talked about Mexico going on the silver standard as being one thing that might help this, which I think just confused a lot of people.
General: C
He needs to stop verbalizing his pauses.
Eeehhh.. Eeehhh. Eeehhh.
This was a generally sympathetic audience, but for the most part, people just seemed to sit there somewhat confused.
There was very little (no) attempts to make emotional connections to the audience.
Sorry, I like and support Dr. Paul, but I don't worship him. He needs to work on his speeches and message to develop them into coherent policies that go beyond libertarian idealism. And he needs to go out and make an attempt to touch people emotionally more if he wants to win this primary and the following election.
I agree that he could hone some of these messages to greater effect. Dr. Paul is an intellectual and an idealist (as you mention), so I think it's difficult for him to address these issues in sound-bite bumper-sticker ways. Yet, I think that's exactly what to some degree he must do in order to succeed.
My sister, for one, was really anxious to listen to Dr. Paul and when she did, she was disappointed. I think she said she was expecting more. This is the emotional connection to the audience, or lack thereof, that you speak about.
We all have to deal with this when we talk about our specialties with non-specialists, like communicating complex science to the general public. The best somehow do it without dumbing it down. Dr. Paul needs to do this with his political stances.
Entitlements are the real budget nightmare, you are also correct. Especially medicare, but you have to offer people the solution not just what needs to be eliminated.
Maybe some props would be fun. He could pull out a 1 oz American Eagle gold coin, explain how this could buy 10 barrels of oil in 1997 and 10 barrels of oil in 2007, then have two piles of dollars for the same thing...one 300, one 1000...that's a lesson in inflation and debasement of currency.
What a fantastic program and an exceptional platform. Dr Paul should make town hall meetings a campaign focus. A town hall meeting in every primary state. Questions from the citizens explained in full measure. Bring the campaign to the people.
affirmation: President Paul 2008
There he is, folks - the people's President!
Dr. Paul is brillant with his knowledge - a continuous history lesson.
Pray for Dr. Paul; I love this guy:)
Is anyone else having problems with the volume on this. I have volume control at three different locations on my computer up to max and still can't really hear the broadcast. Maybe if I turn my air conditioner off, it might help, but the recorded volume is too low.
They had a little trouble getting some of the questioners microphones turned on, in time for them to speak, but thats the only audio issue I noticed. Sounded great on Youtube.

Did anyone
view this live in New Hampshire? Was it on a major station with an audience? Did this reach voters? Sorry that I'm not clear about it.
I watched it live on TV

Listened to the Townhall meeting.

Thank you
that was great
Good program, but was "hard to hear" at times (volume)
but I did like the program, especially Barry Goldwater, Jr. making his endorsement known :-)
Great Interview
Thanks for the link!

Great show
I think Ron Paul did great.
I wonder why they did it in such a small room. It was overflowing but that didn't really take much to make happen.
Please tell me
Was this broadcast on a major network in New Hampshire? Who did this reach?
I wish
I knew as well. The campaign said that they'd bought TV time throughout the state but that's all I know.
right around 20 min. in
Great McCain & Obama question -
Same here
Volume's on max, still straining to hear RP. I'm at the 2nd question, can't understand what the guy said. Audio quality could use serious work.
Commercial
There are some brilliant portions in this clip that could be turned into a real nice commercial if properly edited.
I have been sending to people.
Thanks
