The Pros & Cons of a NH Recount

First, let's begin with this quote from Noam Chomsky:
The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.
Let's expand the range of debate by discussing the pros and cons of a New Hampshire recount, and then give your opinion about whether you'd like to see a recount or not. As for me, I've heard that a recount would cost $65,000. As another supporter put it to me, "that's chump change" for the campaign. It would amount to something like .50 for each of the people who contributed. Let's see...I maxed out my donation, so I'd be happy to see .50 of that go towards a recount.
I've heard some people say we should "drop it" and continue to work because it makes us looks like we're wearing "tin foil hats," and it will only hurt our chances and make us look bad in future states.
My response is:
1) What is the point of "dropping it" and continuing to work if we have no confidence that the votes are being counted properly? This is not just an issue for this campaign, but for the future of America.
2) The people who are wearing "tin foil hats" are those who believe in black box voting. Anyone who believes that the new American way is to surrender your vote to a computer with no paper trail, no possible way of being audited, and plenty of ways of being hacked simply isn't thinking properly. Reagan said, "trust, but verify." Can we please verify?
3) If the best we can muster is 8% in the "Live Free or Die" state where so much of the campaign's resources went and where we had the best chance of scoring big, then it is pretty hard for me to believe that we'll do much better than that in any other states. In order words, there is very little to lose. Furthermore, some of the best battles are won by those with little to lose.
I have read about the various irregularities that took place yesterday, and I have long read about those terrible Diebold machines. Personally, I'd like to see a recount, or some type of investigation into the irregularities.
That is what I believe. I'd like to hear what others believe, pro or con. Finally, I don't know whether the above quote is really Chomsky or not. I found it on the internet and it rings true whether he said it or not. The point is: think everything over for yourself, come to your own conclusions and act accordingly.

After a careful investigation, I have decided against seeking a recount in New Hampshire. I am confident that not asking for a recount is the right decision.
I carefully considered the arguments for and against a recount before instructing my campaign staff not to pursue it. Without a firm belief that vote fraud had taken place, and without the possibility that a recount would have increased the chances for success of our campaign, a recount would have diverted campaign resources, time, and energy away from crucial battles elsewhere.
We have taken concerns about vote fraud seriously. In Iowa, campaign volunteers carefully monitored the caucuses. Campaign staff placed Paul supporters in every precinct to watch and verify the voting and count. We had supporters phone in results from their precincts to a campaign hotline while others ensured that those numbers were reflected on the official display board at the Polk County Convention Center. The numbers our caucus watchers reported agreed with the official tally, and both results also aligned with the campaign’s internal polling. In relatively pro-Paul counties, our sampling pegged support at 11.5%. This is consistent with an overall 10% finish for the entire state.
In New Hampshire, while I would have hoped for a better result than eight percent, I am convinced that vote fraud played no role in this result. Rumors of vote fraud were investigated, and in the end they proved to be the result of errors in early media reports that were not reflected in the official numbers. In one notable case, when a campaign staff member contacted an individual who had on the evening of January 8 claimed that his vote had not been counted, the person said that he had made a mistake and that the next morning the error in reporting on a newspaper website had been corrected both in the media and -- most importantly -- in the official tally.
Many have expressed concerns that those ballots counted by machine yielded a 2% lower total than those counted by hand. However, machine counted vote totals were more than 2% lower for both John McCain and Mike Huckabee. Hand counted votes were more likely to be cast in rural areas. Results almost always vary between urban and rural areas.
My campaign staff and I have analyzed the numbers in New Hampshire and I have reached the conclusion that it was the high turnout -- not vote fraud or counting errors -- that left us with eight percent of the vote. Our total vote count of over 18,000 votes was well within what we projected given the efforts of our extensive statewide get-out-the-vote program, giving me no reason to believe that vote fraud played any role in the results of the Granite State’s primary.
In both Iowa and New Hampshire there is much to be proud of. Taking both states together, I am honored that over 30,000 people cast their vote for me -- more than either Rudy Giuliani or Fred Thompson. Unlike many other candidates’ efforts, our campaign for freedom is growing and our message is spreading.
Now is the time to redouble our efforts. Our resources must be spent on the upcoming primaries and caucuses, and on ensuring that, with your help, we organize every state yet to vote with our Precinct Leaders program.
We can't win primaries and caucuses that have already happened -- but we can win those yet to come. To become the Republican presidential nominee, a candidate must have 1,191 delegates. Iowa, Wyoming and New Hampshire determined only 32 delegates, so we have much opportunity remaining.

A Recount would work against him
My opinion is that a having recount would be a unnecessary time sink. Ron Paul is running a marathon race from state to state. It would sap time and energy out of him, both of which would be better spent in winning new supporters.You can't have it both ways, especially since time is one thing he has so little of before the primaries.
If you will forgive the analogy, it's like an invasion. You don't stop and fight the enemy at every point. You bypass him and move on to the objective.
And Ron Paul's objective should be the White House.

The recount is important
However, the WHOLE ballot trail has to be assessed and found to be 'OK'. Else, there will be no telling how it may have been compromised.
Given that, the recount HAS to be done to ensure integrity, or to ferret out the lie, for vote fraud is a fact!

If Ron Paul has thoroughly investigated the situation, we need to believe him. 3 votes in one county, or 31 total is miniscule. IF someone had witnessed an unauthorized agent or technician pose as a Dieblod employee, and IF it was discovered by an IT expert that fraud had occurred, then, THAT would have been MAJOR NEWS.
That hasn't happened. However, I put Dr. Paul in touch with the Princeton University Professor to verify if there was any way they could examine those Diebold machines to determine if there was a virus inserted.
I do not know the outcome. I can only assume this was indeed looked into, so I'm giving Dr. Paul the benefit of the doubt, and SO SHOULD YOU.
Yes, I would not put it past the neocons or the banking cartel types to interfere with an election process, BUT they know they have the BIGGEST BRAINWASHER on their side that reaches the MASSES, and THAT'S the MEDIA and the PUNDITS, the boob tube, and several radio talk shows. Ron Paul is the MOST PRINCIPLED man we've ever known in politics. When he started off on this venture, he had his doubts. He wasn't sure, but he thought...maybe he could reach enough people to make a difference...
He did....he reached US....and thousands and thousands and thousands of others. He NEVER DREAMED he would be recognized by so many.
So, let it go is what I say.....there is just NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE to warrant a major recount. We gave $50 to the Granny Warriors we wished we'd given to the campaign, but oh well, we don't regret it in that they mean well. Yes, there could be some more fraud, but read what Dr. Paul said. It satisfies us.

Vote integrity is more important than any other issue Ron Paul - or any candidate at any level for any office in any state or country - and We The People face. At the very least, Ron Paul owes We The People and his thousands of supporters among the grassroots a press conference which addresses and acknowledges vote fraud in America while supporting the decisions Dennis Kucinich (Democrat) and Albert Howard (Republican) recently made to order a recount of the New Hampshire vote.
Ron Paul and his campaign staff need to acknowledge and support any and all efforts that can help restore public trust in an election system, the legitimacy of which, is founded in two vacuous words: "Trust Us...."

Al Gore in 2000 comes to mind. My point is that the recount would likely be rigged as well. Fraud on voting machines will likely be undetectable. From what I've read/viewed, it's pretty easy to write code to alter votes that also deletes itself afterwords making it very difficult to trace. Also, like Al Gore, we'd be viewed by many in a negative light for nitpicking or whatever.
That being said, screw those trepidations. It's time to stop pulling punches. And if the campaign doesn't want to fund it, I'm not bitter towards them. This is about us empowering ourselves anyway. Donate to the Granny Warriors to help pay for this if you can afford it.
We are capable of handling this and all the other attacks on all fronts; we are large in numbers and have the will to do so if we choose.
I also wonder whether it's time to put our grassroots efforts towards fighting fire with fire... I'm not advocating rigging votes at all but I am saying we need to focus much more attention to overcoming the MSM. They're pushing pretty hard right now and we need to push back in more ways than one. The Fox sponsor boycott is great and the blimp is great but we need more ideas/actions along those lines.

While I agree that there is NO issue as IMPORTANT as our VOTE COUNT, and the problem with the voting machines most definitely needs to be addressed, I did not think about the problems we will face with a vote count, considering the fact that the ballot chain of custody has been compromised. In light of the lack of recount action in the Paul campaign, we should consider a new thought. Dr. Paul has proven to be a talker and not a doer. Kucinich and Howard have shown to be leaders that will not only talk the talk but will walk the walk...they deserve our support. I feel there is no further need to fund Dr. Paul's project if he will not fight for every vote of the people who have been fighting for him. I am so disappointed in him. Mr. Howard is to be commended for stepping in as a surrogate and demanding that accountability and due diligence are performed in this election process.

Our votes are worth more than Dr. Paul's dishrag of a response. He didn't acknowledge or support Kucinich or Howard's decision. He didn't address vote fraud in America. He didn't address the massive perils of computer-machine voting/tabulation methods. He didn't address the issue, period!! This is a disgrace! I really don't believe Dr. Paul would take this position. URGENT ISSUE
I've read that Dr. Paul and his official campaign do not want to contest the New Hampshire vote count because the attention on his issues would be taken over by the vote count problem. I'd like to know WHAT ISSUE could possibly be more important than the counting of our votes? Isn't "Democracy" what most of the wars of the past century have supposedly been fought to preserve? Why can't we have it here? Besides, no matter how important Dr. Paul's other issues are, they are insignificant if we can't change anything with our votes! PLEASE MAKE ACCURATE TRANSPARENT VOTE COUNTING an issue of importance! I understand that today is the last day to contest the NH primary. If this is not done, Dr. Paul and his entire "revolution" are dead in the water. All his supporters that I know are furious that they have donated so much to something that is being totally controlled by the neocons. He can't get elected with these voting machines and neither can any of his followers in the future!

It seems that voter fraud has already been established but was only caught because some of the precints were so small and the fraud so obvious. If they would commit fraud to such an extreme in these small precints it makes one wonder what is happening in the larger precints. Perhaps anyone who voted for Ron Paul should sign an affidavit to that effect and a class action lawsuit should be brought against the company for voter fraud. It would seem that these people's most basic right to be represented in an election has been circumvented. Is there any place online that is claiming to track the number of people who are voting for Ron Paul. Not only should Paul supporters be outraged but others as well. Unfortunately it seems only Paul supporters really even care about basic civil liberties anymore.
First in History
This will be a first, a FIFTH place candidate calling for a recount. Even if there are lost votes it will not be enough to make a serious change. The media will make so much fun of it that we will lose more votes in the future than we might gain in a recount.
Remember if they are errors they are probably there at some level for all candidates. If it was fixed why did the polls show mostly the same expected result right before the election? Where there really five times as many voters?
The most valuable thing to do is figure out why with all the volunteers, excellant message and money the antional campaign was not able to make a showing. Then chnage that FAST. For the first offiicial act of leadership the campaign might recommend that it would be better to focus our efforts on states that are still in play.
There are many things in this world that are wrong and certainly there are ulterior motives but but really there are much bigger issues for the campaign. Regardless of who counts the votes there is going to have to be a MUCH better effort at coordination nationally. Getting rid of electronic voting is a fine goal, do it after the election, there is no time to tackle that one now anyway.
You have to consider the unintended consequences of your actions and this has far more potential for harm than good.

Who gets to count?
We need an army of volunteers to do the recount. There’s no use in doing the recount if the same people in charge of the voting process is also doing the counting.
Also, there’s no reason for any state to deny a recount as long as volunteers are doing the counting for free. All states should require manual counting of the ballots as long as volunteers are available to do the counting. Random boxes can be counted until time to validate the results.
Having Paul supporters do a recount is no better than Clinton
If Ron Paul supporters do the recount nobody would trust the results, just the same as if Clinton supporters did the recount. There's too much of an incentive to fudge.
The state should pay people who don't have an active interest in politics to perform the recount in public.
Just letting anybody touch the paper ballots seems like a really bad idea. I hope NH is smarter than that.

It would need to be a mixture of people. Maybe some Democrats, Republicans, and Independents doing independent totals; and then compare the results.
Not only count the votes, but also check the math when adding all the totals up.

Please use my donations to pay for a recount in N.H. How can a candidate expect his ground troops to get out there and fight for every vote for him, if the candidate won't even make the effort to verify every vote has been counted fairly when there is evidence of vote tampering? There are things that simply must take priority. Ron Paul and the campaign must pay whatever it takes to get a hand recount of votes in New Hampshire so as to get a definable picture of the accuracy of the electronic machines. I believe that Ron Paul owes this not only to his supporters but to all Americans so that we can get an early indication of these machines accuracy. This needs to be done immediately. If the Paul campaign refuses to pay for any hand counts I will take that as a betrayal to myself and all Americans. Someone needs to do this for us now. I would personally donate to a"recount fund" if the campaign would use it.

I JUST SPOKE WITH NATIONAL CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS
AND the nice gentleman that I spoke with (Randy) assurred me that they ARE going to DEMAND a recount in NH! He asked if I had visited the official RP website and there will be postings there to keep us updated on the process.
He also told me that they have A LOT of advertising planned for the upcoming primary states.
I told him that I live in FL and I have not personally met ONE SINGLE Ghouliani supporter (the snake is currently trying to drum up support down here, UGH!) and everywhere I go, I see nothing but RP signs and sign waving events; tons on Meetup groups, etc.
Randy told me that he has spoken with many people from FL and RP's support is spreading down in the Miami, Orlando, the Keys, etc. area. (Randy is originally from Sarasota) and there is TONS of RP support here in the greater Tampa Bay area, even though Ron Paul hasn't really been here much. Our closed primary is on January 29th I believe and it will be very interesting to see how the liars and thieves plan on trying to STEAL Ron Paul's votes here!

Call 877-RONPAUL. They will listen especially if you are from New Hampshire and know that 1) you cast votes for Ron Paul and 2) they were not included in the total, i.e. Sutton County.
I do not see the thread active today. However I think Greenville was mentioned too as missing votes for Dr Paul.
I feel this is VERY URGENT that you CALL the Campaign NOW (during business hours).

Well thats an interesting theory, however the GOP would rather run a dead horse and cede the next 8 years to the neo-liberals than give the nomination to Paul and have AIPAC pull all their $$ support for GOP out of congress.

Could it be possible that they are intentionally creating such an even spread between all the candidates so that the winner will only be revealed at the convention?? By doing this:
1. the democratic nominee is known
2. the proven stance on where the American people stand on the war is revealed
3.enough time is given for "their" candidate to have either
(a) switched positions which is unlikely because that will look bad or
(b) enough time is given for "them " to switch to Ron Paul simply to win the white house.If by that time the fact that the American people want out of the war is proven, they will have no other choice but to support Ron Paul in order to win the white house.
(c) enough time to instigate some kind of horrific attack in order for the American people to support the war again

It's a question of winning Delegates - If Ron Paul is entitled to delegates in New Hampshire and he didn't get them because of vote fraud, he's not going to get any in any other state either. This whole thing will be over in 3 weeks with the help of Diebold. The campaign Must demand a recount now. There is no other option. Don't worry about being labeled a conspiracy theorist because guess what? There is a conspiracy to marginalize Paul's message. There is nothing to lose, I'm suprised Paul has not jumped all over NH by now.

If N.H. isn't remedied, the same thing is going to happen again and again! Why waste our time and money if there is a good possibility this is going to happen again? Ron supposedly had 51% of the hand counted votes, and some rediculous single digit percentage from the machines.

I found the county by county on MSNBC and there were 601 votes for Paul in Concord

How Meetups Work & A Clever Response on a Recount
Meetup members do not always live where the meetup is. However, if they did all live in the area, it is a very freaky statistic and a good indication to check those precincts out.
I also think it would be clever to say, "Why, do election officials feel they have something to hide?" That's what they say to us when we don't want warrantless searches and "REAL" IDs.
On the other hand, $65,000 does buy a lot of radio advertising.

if there is any way an "expert" can examine those machines AFTER a poll closes to determine if there has been any RIGGING or TAMPERING with the Diebold machines.
This is critical. DON'T CALL the Princeton professor. I already have done so, and he's not returning my 2 messages. I have sent all the information to HDQTRS, and I HOPE Dr. Paul will PERSONALLY contact the professor.
We (50 year olds) also traveled to Iowa, and we don't want to see our TIME wasted because we can't trust electronic Diebold or ES&S machines. It makes me wonder why Dr.Paul would even decide to run in the first place, if he knew the potential for VOTE FRAUD. Perhaps, he didn't think he'd be such a target. I don't know. EMAILS might be in order to explain more to his supporters.
IF DR. PAUL demands a recount, then, he has to say the following TO THE MEDIA and keep repeating it like a broken record:
"We are conducting a VOTE RECOUNT, because our records show that I should have come in 3rd place, period."
I would not say anything more than that. I would not give them the "SUSPICIONS" he might have or any information.
I would NOT give them ANY details!! Just keep repeating this like a broken recort.....

I would not get into WHO might have done this, PERIOD, nor HOW we derived at this conclusion. Don't give the MEDIA any more food for fodder.
NH isn't worth it
It's not the cost of a recount either. I've been really been weighing the options between demanding a recount and letting it go. I would love to see a recount prove fraud and increase the number of votes that RP received in NH. On the other hand, if a recount were unsuccessful (i.e. RP got an extra 100 votes not originally counted) it could be detrimental to the campaign. Other candidates and the MSM have painted RP'ers as conspiracy theorists, let's not prove them right. If NH were a much bigger state, then by all means, demand a recount. But NH is small. On the off chance that there was a very minor error, we end up looking bad, real bad (probably the end of the campaign). I think a perception that the vote was tainted is almost just as good. Does it make me mad? Hell yes. How can I channel my anger? By letting this strengthen my resolve. We need to look forward to the next few states and surge ahead with our message of the truth. We also need to do a better job auditing the counts (however possible, exit polls etc.) Any lawyers out there? I suppose now would not be the time to try and change the voting system. But, let's not give them reason to think we are conspiracy theorists, even if you are, and even if NH was a conspiracy.

I live in NH in one of the smallest towns there is - Sharon. The reason Dr. Paul has more votes with the hand-count is because the small _rural_ towns use hand counts and Dr. Paul is more popular in rural areas.
Really ....
Because I would think in urban areas where there are 1) bigger meetups working their asses off, and 2) more young progressives, he'd make a strong showing.
