So I was at college putting Slim Jims on cars when an officer came up to me....UPDATE!

He said " what are you guys doing?" (there were three of us). We told the officer that we are trying to get people to vote for Ron Paul and he said..."procede".. well after we get literally 500 cars finished, the same cop (public safety officer) says " the orders from headquarters are that you guys have to take back all of your flyers because they become litter". We said thanks and now i am in the library hiding out...UPDATE! The security officers took all 500 of them off the cars.......What a waste of time and money...It does make me more determined though

Putting flyers on cars

Though I admire your zeal I have to ask everyone out there to NOT put any Ron Paul materials on cars. It is both an annoyance to the car owner and is usually considered "littering" by your local municipal code. May I suggest you check with your local meetup group (www.ronpaul.meetup.com) or ronpaul2008.com or your county registrar's office for a list of registered republicans in your area. Go to their homes, ring the bell, and HAND Dr. Paul's message to them. It is more effective than sign waving, TV ads, phone calls, etc. If we all do this RON WILL WIN.

boy, that stinks! But there are some

really great ideas on this thread

First thing you have to do

Well, check the laws before you go out to make sure you do not waste your time. Also be aware that many times the laws are not the same for advertisements and campaign material. When stopped, be very polite and ask what law are you being questioned about violating and what are the rules for distributing political information. Make sure that the person asking you knows the exact laws and if they do not request that they speak to a supervisor. The sad part is that most people enforcing the laws have no clue what they are. I live in Dade County Florida and posted my phone number on my meetup so that people could call and get free slim jims to hand out and the next day someone from code enforcement called to tell me I had been reported as the "Leader of the Ron Paul Campaign" and I was in violation of the law because there were signs all over the city. I was a bit upset because it was clear that some anti Ron Paul person had been stalking my meetup waiting for me to post any personal information so they could report me. I asked what the laws were about putting up sign and the person could not tell me. I requested to speak to a supervisor and they could not tell me, all the while the story was I had be reported there for I was the one in the wrong and I had to take down the signs. I had my lawyer call them back and the referred her to the city attorney who also did not know the law. Finally after 3 days, my lawyer got a call from the City Manager telling her the signs were perfectly legal and I can put out as many signs as I want on city property as long as I do not block traffic or nail them into trees and take them down after the election. So that is what I am working on now. Be informed and make sure the people enforcing the laws are as well and keep up the good work.

BTW the City Manager wanted to let me know they supported Ron Paul!

not worth it

They can charge you with a number of things if they get complaints. If the land owner complains and they find you back again after warning you it's Criminal trespass. If a car owner complains about a damaged wiper, it's tampering with a motor vehicle. If they end up on the ground it's littering. Then the land owner can sue you for clean up costs. (he needed the parking lot professionally swept anyway)

Sam...

You're not asking the right question.

Ask them if they can patrol the parking lot from "way over there" for you.

Hint, hint... but NO bribe.

Ask for favors. they'll do it.

What's the phone number to

What's the phone number to their office. I'll call them from Tokyo and give them a piece of my mind. I'll ask them if they realize their country is being stolen from them by power brokers and elitists. I'll also ask them how much they make and how many taxes they pay.

Don't flush the Constitution down the toilet

I printed up small clear labels and am putting them in bathroom stalls. They are easily taken off and everybody wants to read something in the stalls. I place them right above the toilet paper dispenser and on the top of the mirror. Nobody has taken them down as of yet

This is cheap. Nobody sees you doing it They are not litter. They are easily carried and concealed. I have about a hundred in my purse right now. I must walk my campus!

Great idea.

Thanks so much for sharing this.

I use the freedom cards

on cars in shopping malls and street parking. I will soon be expanding this to include church parking lots, campuses, park-n-ride, train stations, etc. I have found these business sized cards are less invasive, lower litter value, and offer quicker placement. People in a hurry can easily scan the information on the card and download them into their pocket, purse, bag, or visor, to be pursed later without being upset. My experience has seen less than one percent litter as a result. The many ideas on the use of Sim Jims are great but when it comes to cars I believe the freedom cards are the best bet.

Church security?!?!?

Church security?!?!?

Litter

Why not commit to picking up the "litter" after the event? Lots of municipalities have such policies for campaign signs. The "litter" has to be removed within a month of the election. Sure you wouldn't get 100% but if you agreed to pick up the immediate area, no litter and some could be reused!! This could take some time to get written into the policies but sounds like it would be worth it!

We asked him that

They said "Nope"

Next time, get to the candidate or their highest representative you can find and ask them if Huckabee (or other candidate) supports free speech. Then tell them that campus security is trying to stop you handing out flyers, and would they please stick up for you.

Some places have policies against putting flyers on car windows

We should always check out the legality of what we're doing first. I'm not sure this was the case, but it is quite possible.

I heard leaving a few slim

I heard leaving a few slim jims inside the bank's "deposit" envelopes seemed to get people's attention as well as inside a few grocery stores in the hallmark card section...

Great laugh this morning

I read your post and couldn't help from visualizing 3 RP supporters huddling in a corner of a dark library hiding from the police. I shared with all my work colleagues for a great laugh. Keep up the work and GO Ron!!! Thanks for the post.

you hand a flyer to officer?

No

But now they have about 500 hundred because they took them all off...Sometimes I hate GA.

the university is making money

the university is making money on his tuition so I doubt they'd ever harass him much; at the university of minnesota, a professor on the "beautification committee" talked about how he was making the campus "corporation friendly" so they'd get more corporate donations. thus, universities are slowy becoming pawns of the government again and uncensored thought is a thing of the past.

i.e. i'd bet that the cop removed the flyers because universities simply don't want to encourage political organizing on campus anymore; the cop's action was like painting over grafetti in the bathroom as quickly as possible in an attempt to suggest that students can't "get status" via grafetti-- a good thing in my opinion. but I do wish that universities wouldn't censor political speech. it was disappointing to see St. Thomas University "uninvite" Desmond Tutu because he had empathy for the Palestinians and wouldn't call them terrorists.

for the record...

I am with a registered student organization (Gamecocks for Ron Paul) and I was kicked out of our student union for handing out flyers prior to a Huckabee event for similar reasons. I was told I was "soliciting" and that passing out educational information was the sole right of the University of South Carolina. Likewise, when I probed further about why what I was doing was considered "soliciting" and why I had to always reserve space inside the student union ahead of time (which typically takes forever, doesn't always work, and does little to help a political action group when they find out at the last minute Huckabee would be propagandizing on my campus). They replied that it was a "safety/security measure" and that it was to prevent "litter." It seems this "litter" thing is the new ways universities are counter-acting student activism. The sad thing is, just two months back there was an article in our student magazine asking why activism on campus has decreased so much in the past 30 years.... gee, I wonder why?

Herein is the full story:

Late last Friday night (Friday, January 18th, 2008 - one night before the SC Primary), I found out that Mike Huckabee would be "jamming out" in my university's student union. Horrified by this, I proceeded (on my own cognizance, which is to be stressed as I am not officially connected with the campaign) to make photocopies of a flyer about Huckabee's pardoning of Wayne Dumond. With a decent stack in hand (maybe 100 copies) I proceeded to the student union (here called the Russell House) and stood politely across from a table of Huckabee supporters near the entrance of the Huckabee rally. I did not wear any Ron Paul information, and only very politely passed out my flyer to those who would take it. I wasn't confronting anyone verbally, nor was I being rude to the Huckabee people. For the first 20 minutes I was there, campus security and the information desk could see me in plain sight and made no qualms with my being there. After awhile, however, the three ladies running the Huckabee table were beginning to get upset that a significant portion of attendees were taking my flyer but not their 'I like Mike' sign (sidenote: *vomit*), and began to give me uneasy stares. Soon thereafter a student went to walk into the rally with their own homemade sign, at which point the Huckabee people began to harass the student, and make sure the sign was pro-Huckabee before letting them enter (bear in mind, these 'Huckabee people' were not students, but paid supporters). Noticing my frown at the activity, one of the Huckabee ladies then proceeded to walk up to me and ask if she could have one of my flyers. I shrugged and told her, "sure" and then proceeded to continue politely handing out my flyer to those passing by without harassing them by any means. Well, after the three ladies quickly whispered to each other and pointed at me, I was accosted by student union security within 90 seconds. Asking to "speak with (me) over there for a minute," they told me I could not hand out my "solicitation" material ("Solicitation? But I'm not selling anything, and I'm an officer in an approved student organization," I tell them), and that I had to be oustide of the union grounds, which included the street in front of the building.

Upset, I immediately called my student organization president, dumped the flyers back in the car, and immediately returned to the information desk to seek out my university's "solicitation" policy in writing. Upon entering the building I was followed by security (fearing I would make a scene, I suppose), and I walked briskly up to the information desk. Thereafter, I was shown the policy by a number of people and was horrified to read "providing educational information or sessions (exclusive of formal University of South Carolina academic classes)" was considered solicitation. The information desk also took offense that I used the phrase "was escorted out of the building," as they claimed they only said I could not pass out my flyer, even though security personnel walked me to the door. The following week (i.e., yesterday, Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008) I inquired further about the solicitation policy and who wrote it, only to be told the policy was in effect (which required reservations by approved student organizations) for safety/security purposes and to prevent litter. I countered that I *was* with an approved student organization and only found out about the rally at the last minute, and that if the university didn't like our activities, they shouldn't have approved our organization status. I can understand to some degree why they wouldn't want lone anarchists or the like standing in their building shouting obscenities and passing out literature, but I'm with an *approved* student political organization, and was only politely passing out flyers to entrants at a political rally. I was told there was nothing that they could do, and that next time I should make sure I go through their reservation process for everything.

Run for a position on the government

seems to me that you should run for a position on the government, and get some friends that believe this policy should be changed to run as well

Discrimination?

The Supreme Court (I believe) already ruled that political speech is not solicitation, and that local ordinances against solicitation do not apply. (I'm sorry, I don't know which court, but I'm sure you can find it on the 'net.)

But the obvious thing is, if they let some people hand out material, they must let any student do so.

They were embarrassed by your flyer, because they were hosting a presidential candidate. But embarrassment is no excuse.

But now we know: Huckabee's campaign is against free speech!

IMissLiberty

you're right!

I looked it up, and you're right.... though it has been upheld for nearly forever, my right to anonymous political speech was most recently upheld by Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of New York v. Village of Stratton, 2002. Wish me luck... I'm going back to the school today with this ruling in hand demanding they change the solicitation policy and issue a formal apology!

definately worth an article in your campus paper!

you may have already done it - but that was a great read and it would make a good article in your school or local paper.

Another idea ...

I was in the store yesterday looking to buy some reading glasses. Was looking around for something to read and saw nothing. Then I remembered I had some slim jims in my coat pocket. Pulled one out and used it to help me select the right power. Then I thought, well geez, everybody who buys reading glasses is going to be looking for something to read, so now I'm on a mission to go to all the places that sell reading glasses and leave Ron Paul slim jims on all the displays!!

I take my marching orders from the Constitution!

since were on the topic

I also leave slimjims in those pouches in front of your seat on airplanes. It's a lot easier than reading Skymall or the other stuff crammed in there. :)

haha keep it up

good work man.

I go to a very small private college and have been accused of placing ron paul bumper stickers (the official campaign sticker) all across campus simply becuase I have the same bumper sticker. I had to assure campus security it was the offical campaign bumper sticker so it is widely popular, that I lived off campus so such an act would be rather rediculous for me to do, and that Ron Paul is widely supported.

Turns out some other fellow Paulites took the liberty of putting Ron Paul bumper stickers on the security cars and golf carts and on signs across the campus - the best placement being right under a sign pointing to "the president's house".

Not the way I would cavass (bumper stickers on college property), but the college hasn't taken any of them down - which is funny.

Check local laws first

If you check local laws before going out with slimjims, you'll be in a better position when the cops come. My township has no laws covering cars and political campaign lit. so I got the smiling privilege of educating them on the law.

Also

I usually place slim jims in the public bathroom stalls, people tend to want read in there for some reason

Don't we all guys know it. LOL

Drink Cups

With that logic, the Cafeteria should not be able to serve drinks in to-go containers because they too could become litter.

KMoore
May our efforts in support of Doctor and Congressman Ron Paul's Campaign to be President of these United States of America be blessed with supernatural productivity and success

here's an idea

Since they are using paper drink cups anyway get some "Who is Ron Paul?" cups made up and leave them at the student union by the coffee machine, or make your own and do the same.

We were putting slim jims on

We were putting slim jims on cars at a church and had church security come out and pull them off the cars. They walked up to us and told us we could not be putting Dr. Paul's slim jims on the cars. We asked if we could have them back and they ripped them up in front of us. We were blown away that they would do such a childish thing so we waved our Ron Paul signs across the street as the church let out.
Who says I'm not a church goer now, I'll see them next week with my sign waving friends. We love to here them honk in support of Dr. Paul and watch the security people get huffy!

Swithching screen savers, home page defaults, etc...

on computers at electronics stores and libraries works alright, too!

j

yeah

I do that a lot!

Nice!

Nice! I have been doing that too!

doesn't it feel...

kind of sneaky? But so much fun!

j

Legally you do not have to collect them

It's a transaction between yourself and the vehicle owner, the officer can not stop you from distributing flyers in a public place. Of course...if it was College property...I don't know.

Liberty

Is biodegradable.

another idea

is leave a slim jim in some books as book markers. Especially the political books.

LOL

I do this too! Hahaha..I go to our local library a few times a month and do it. Cool...

I also will drop coin to get in the newspaper boxes and stuff all of the papers. USAToday is my favorite, they owe us anyway, RP coverage in their rag has not been pretty.

Halarious!

You are my new heroe!

Who would throw away such a good thing?

"He who exercises government by means of his virtue may be compared to the north polar star, which keeps its place and all the stars turn towards it." Confucius

Do this

Pull some Ron Paul books off the shelf and leave them scattered on the various tables. You don't have to sign them out, just lay them on the tables. :)

I do this..

whenever I am in a waiting room and there are magazines, I place a slim jim in each magazine. I especially like finding news magazines, and make sure to place them where there are articles about the other candidates.
