Be realistic. If things get REALLY bad you will be under great stress. Your appetite will be affected and beans are hard to eat. So eat them now and buy some extra "comfort foods" for when you will need them Things that won't need cooking and that pack well.

If you've never grown a garden, forget about that as an emergency food source. Rather, plant a garden now to learn for the future and, more importantly, to create a place of peace and healing for yourself.

Canning foods destroys many of the nutrients and requires supplies and fuel. Try to eat with the seasons. Meats, nuts, sprouts, potatoes, cabbage in the winter. Eggs, dairy and vegetables in the summer. Learn how to preserve without a refrigerator using salt, oil, sandboxes, etc.

Don't forget to stock up on essentials like oil, salt, sugar, coffee, ketchup, flour.

Great post from a fellow upstater (Utica area). I wouldn't want to be anywhere else when the feces contact the oscillating cooling device. I would recommend everyone here heed this advice. It will not take long for the store shelves to become bare.

To Saul...we appreciate and respect your beliefs but let's limit this to political discourse. Please remember Separation of Church and State.

Getting prepared now is not hoarding. It will actually ease the load on the system when unprepared people like saul4paul and pajeff scramble to hoard "after" the crisis becomes plainly apparent to even the lowest common denominator of society.

Keep up the good work trying to inform people of what might lay ahead sooner than we think. They sure aren't getting any facts from school, media and "officials" in govt. Just don't tell others where you hide it or they will lead a posse to take it from you later.

What a shame that old fashioned preparers are laughed at, savers are decimated by dollar inflation and those with assets are preyed upon by trial lawyers, tax agents and common thieves today when the potential fall for society as a whole for not being prepared is so great.

up. You know people in the 1800's always put food up for the winter. Our family growing up always had a garden and we canned. This not having any food stored up is a relatively new thing. Our society eats fast food and junk food and most people haven't a clue what to do in an emergency. Just look at the Katrina mess.

They still have an unhealthy faith that the state acts in America's best interest. There is nothing wrong with being prepared.

Secondly, many here are the types that think anything outside of the status quo is a "conspiracy", and should be immediately dismissed. I know what you are talking about, all the FEMA camps, and I've even seen an interview with a head FEMA guy talking about them (he refuses to say how many there are, and also refuses to say why he cant say how many there are...)! He claims they are there in case of "emergencies" so they can lock up and control massive groups of people to "protect them from themselves". Germany anyone?

No, no, no, of course that couldn't happen here! Our beloved government would never do that to us!......sarcasm aside, what makes you think they care about you? They are busy torturing and murdering innocent Iraqis for a pretty penny, and you think they would never turn on you if they could??? How naive!

first paycheck of every month I buy a box of shells and a case of canned goods. Don't kid yourselves, if Ron Paul doesn't get elected we will need these things. If he does get elected I can give the canned goods to charity.

I have been preaching this to my family for a couple months now. Some people think this will be a mild recession--possibly at first--but there is nothing mild about a massively inflated market and a dollar that they sacrifice for it. I think it is definitely intentional. Problem-reaction-solution. They are creating the problem so they can eventually provide the solution of their choice. For those of you who are saying this is an exaggeration, tell me the fatal flaw in being prepared. Stocking up on food is "foolish" only if you don't plan on eating in the future.

We were advised today (Jan. 23, 2008) that NO food supplier will guarantee pricing any longer than three (3) weeks. Food prices are rising ASTRONOMICALLY! You can thank the Muslim oil producers, AND our government's meddling and forcing ethanol gasoline on us, for this.

Our dehydrated foods supplier is NOW working on a revised price list that will be out in a few days and all our prices WILL be going up. They told us that the only way they can think of to stabilize their pricing is to over-price items so they can absorb the increases that will follow (and not have to revise every 3 weeks).

If you have ANY intention of setting back some foods for hard times, or camping, or sailing. DO IT NOW! Putting it off could cost you 2 or 3 times as much.

Often, we in todays society like to think that bad things can't happen. So most people just flock to liars that say its all going to be ok. Well, when you have top financial pundits finally admitting in the MSM that the ship is sinking (it has been for three years, but they won't tell you that.) then it's time to start preparing. Top advisors tell us that even if we took our medicine and raised interest rates, letting the market crash, that we wouldn't se prosperity until 2010....and that is the "good news" or best case scenario. Instead, we have the fed just pummeling the dollar in order to save the billionaire share holders at the middle and lower classes' expense. One might even see this as a ploy to dump the dollar, take up the Amero and share our debt with Canada and Mexico.
The most important thing that people need to do is get out of debt as quickly as you can. This will be the "live or die" characteristic upon economic collapse. Thank God I decided a long time ago that college was a sham and all that one needs to do to become successful is to think critically, learn a trade and read allot. My wife however still has 15,000 in student loans to pay off, which we are now faster than ever.
I will be relying on the three G's through this tribulation.....Guns, God, and Gold. I am glad I'm a member of a church community that will help us through what is about to go down.
