Fix this web site or dump it!

I have never experienced such a POS web site as this one is. Every other time I try to open a page on it, I get the "page can not be displayed" error. It is beyond ridiculous. Fix it or dump it. It's getting to be more a joke than anything else. Pathetic. And, I know others have complained about this, but who ever is running the show doesn't seem able to fix the problem.

manystrom does have a real job on top of keeping this site going Give the guy a break or just have a little patience. I believe he has a lot on his plate and I'm also sure he want's this site to be the best as possible. Patience and Positivity...I'm not sure I quite understand the reasonings for all the negativity and hate. too many here and in many posts are getting to Negative the negativity is getting out of control People. All i'm trying to say is to please Think Positive : )

This site is a little slow, because it's so active and busy!

i love this site

just like real life, full of problems but warm, informative and with a real hart
and dont worry ellobo, the job will get done.
and let go of your negativety,a RP supporter always looks at the bright side to find a solution!

When You See Something Wobble, Push It

Chrls - Thanks for not blasting me. I am surprised nobody has yet. I am a rabid Paul fan, but i also believe I am grounded in reality.

The supporters on this site, to be sure, put me to shame for positivity. Perhaps everybody here has watched the secret and they will create reality. I sure hope so, but it's hard for me to remain so upbeat.

Personally, i have already shifted my mindset for a decade long challenge. Willl I be active everyday? Probably not. But, i am watching closely what RP is going to do with his list of emails he has collected from those that have donated, Trevor's list, and the master precinct member list.

Read Gary North's analysis on what could be in the makings. This, for sure, i would be a part of. Depending on how it pans out perhaps there is an opportunity for a major role. I personally think this is how we will get the job done. It's going to take time. By that time Many's site will have a unix back end with RAID 10 with 5 nines up time. HA! HA! I am not a techno guy but i understand the jargon.

Enjoy!

Growth is a challenge

This is a good post; many good suggestions.

I wish there were monitors hired so that the CFR trolls who delete real issues -- could be stopped.

I believe this site uses

I believe this site uses Drupal... which sucks and collapses easily under pressure. It can't handle the load very well. They need to have two dedicated servers and a raid setup -- one server for the database and the other for the front end. It's not that expensive either -- go to liquidweb.com and get it from them, plus get 24/7 phone support. They rock!

hey tank, maybe you could email Mr. Nystrom with those

suggestions. Maybe he is already arranging something like that, I have no idea.

Liquidweb can help them.

They only need to call liquidweb.com (800 number on their site) and just tell them the truth about the traffic numbers and that they're running drupal -- the rest liquidweb will take of. They will tell them exactly what they need, hardware upgrades, etc. I've been with them for nearly 3 years and they have a 100% uptime guarantee. Great service, so I do hope they are reading this post.

You are a POS.

If you want to visit this site and complain about the performance, donate! Get off this site if you're not willing to put your money where your mouth is. Small minded, whiny, phuks like you should join mcain or romney's team. this site is offered to you free of charge and YOU have the balls to complain? PHUHK U!

actually, $4,000 was raised here last week to

update the servers or capacity of whatever. We DID donate. I was expecting the problem to be solved by now. However, often it does take time to find a server and make any required design changes. I assume problems will clear up soon.

Yes. I gave.

I got a great poster in exchange. I ove this site.

good stuff

Truthy

you're a funny SOB. You have the balls to beat up this site and owner right on the site itself. good stuff. But, now everybody hates you. HA! HA!

Maybe this site is a symbolic of the RP campaign. It is set up well, has great information, and a bunch of rabid followers, but it just does not seem to get the job done.

Sound familiar?

Now, i am going to get blasted and somebody is going to go tell me to hold a sign or be a precinct leader. Of course, they will have no idea about what I have done to support RP. But, that does not matter. The most important thing to do around here is not to question or demand results. The campaign knows what it's doing and it was of strategic importance to get 5th in the most libertarian freedom oriented state in the country. To question that strategy is blasphemy. Don't forget about the secret plan!

I hope i am wrong, eat the biggest crow pie, and Tuesday changes the dynamics of the race. Until then ,the snarkyness makes me laugh b/c RP supporters (myself included to a certain degree) are delusional.

LOL, maybe we are all delusional

to expect this dumbed-down country of nanny state lovers and subsidy or welfare hungry lazy ass citizens to actually want their liberty back. I'm serious. They don't.

The hordes will flock, however, to the candidate with the biggest smile and offers them lots of free stuff and feel good slogans. I present you Barrack Obama....

BO

Barack Obama makes me feel good inside. I like his idea of change...but, I don't really know what that means, but it sure makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

I love the idea that he wants the folks in African huts to know how important they are to me as an american citizen. That should, for sure, be a $20 Billiion govt. program to ensure they are aware of that.

BO...oh geez.

Don't Bitch. Pay to help. Jeez this costs money and is grassroot

It's not manystrom's fault

I see some posts and threads going up that are pointless to even start, thus wasting valueable bandwidth because people are always curious about the post and click on it, only to find out it was a waste of time. To me, I would almost classify it as a denial of service attack on DP.

"In the old days..."

they used to say that if response time was more than 10 seconds, the Enter key would need to be replaced within 6 months due to the person hitting it over and over and over.

I just read this thread and selected another thread, only to have it take 15-20 seconds to return "page not found", then another 15-20 seconds using the Back key to end up back here.

Guess I was destined to post here!

I understand enough of the "techie" talk to realize the validity of it, particularly the cumulative effect for bandwidth/transfer times.

I just know that during major high bandwidth times like during the debates, I use the RonPaulForums, instead. I can read 30-40 short comment posts, while DP is still loading (or failing) in a different window.

As someone who *tests* corporate Windows applications, performance is a major factor in whether an application is moved into production or not.

Can the hosting provider be notified of the predictable high peak periods and have a backup plan? Or can there be a stripped down mirror site?

I can't imagine this site on Super Tuesday- I probably won't even try.

I'm not sure why I received a total page not found when I doubt that it is a high volume period right now (4:50 p.m. CST).

On Preview Comment, I've had several pink error message boxes display, as well. I now create a post like this in e-mail and copy it in, so I don't lose all of my work!

Example: The Preview just took about 20 seconds to show!

The experience you described is EXACTLY

what I am experiencing. The time of day and traffic does not seem to make any difference. And, about the pink boxes...I have the same thing happen to me repeatedly.

Posting time was over 4 minutes

I sat and counted seconds (estimated) for more than 4 minutes.

Here's my 2 cents...

Support Ron Paul, our next president of the United States of America.

The truth shall set you free. Hey it's a free site, no subscription. What can I complain about?

Wow

Constructive criticism is one thing, but that was one whiny, spoiled rant if I've seen one. One wise thing to do is think before you speak.

My thoughts exactly...

I'm a webmaster so I

I'm a webmaster so I understand the plight of keeping a site loadable, fast for everyone and so on.

A bit of research and the following information is available. I'm not saying this 'should' be done, it's not my site, I'm not the webmaster, but it's here for the info if desired:

1. Page is loading over 150k of images

2. Two swissamerica.com links, with a total filesize of 55621, could be cut in half by removing one of the links.

3. The google ads code is repeated 3 times in the page - yet only displayed once (triples the download from google for a single spot)
- Google Ad section is showing links to Romney, McCain, Clinton.. kind of counter-productive

4. Multiple images on the page are loaded from 3rd party sites - grab a copy of them, put them on THIS site (leave the anchor links the way they are, just stop relying on 3rd party sites for the graphics).

5. Back-end scripts are being called from 3rd party sites that seem to serve no purpose, or maybe they do. Regardless, every time the code or image comes from somewhere other than dailypaul.com, you are putting your faith in that other site to be fast-loading and capable of keeping up with the bandwidth requests from dailypaul.

6. For SEO, reduce the charactors in the meta keywords tag to 250 or less - the rest are ignored (Google doesn't use keyword meta tags at all) beyond the 250 mark.

7. Canx the favicon.ico reference - the majority of internet users will never use it, browsers dont support it, and it's a preload so it adds to bandwidth whether it works or not.

8. I dont know what DB is used for this forum, but I dont think it's access or it would have crashed by now.. if it's MySQL that would explain the slowness. If not, I'd put my bets on all the overburdened scripts and tooo many ads within the individual forum pages.

Run ads on the homepage, side pages and such - but since the forums are the most highly active for both bandwidth and hits - I'd cut the ads on those pages down by as close to 100% as you could.

As I said, it's not my site and I'm not complaining or pointing out ANY faults at all. There is NOTHING wrong with the way this site is put together, displayed or the choice of content providers. I'm just pointing out ways to make it faster. These are just suggestions.

I spent over 3 hours waiting to get 'in' just to be able to read anything at all yesterday. My own ISP was reporting back 'no such domain' for awhile, and I had 100% packet loss for two solid hours when doing occasional ping requests to the server.

CF

What he said! :)

I don't know anything about this stuff, but if this info helps that would be great!

I may be a vegetarian, but I'll defend to the death my right to eat pork!

Wow I didn' t know we had 15 year olds on here! =)

Good detective work though.

Thank you Michael for all your dedication to dp and RP!

This is the info Manystrom needs in place of rants

Thanks ColdFusion

BTW - I received an error code message with a Mysql references to the "sticky" function during one of the many slow periods.
May want to have a DB person look at how the DB connection string calls are being coded. This is often a bottleneck.

I've never had a MySQL error

I've never had a MySQL error here, so I wasnt sure which database was being used. But since it's MySQL I'll just keep my mouth shut (grin). I'm in the group of DB designers that think MySQL is a sin.

Not that it doesn't work.. there are just better alternatives.. albeit they usually have a price tag attached to them. Many forums come in 'packages' that are not written by the actual site owner - and those tend to come with a MySQL database to run them on because MySQL is free.

there we go

America leading by example.

yea!

..............What he said! LOL

sounds like you know what you're talking about ;)

I get many comments over on

I get many comments over on my site that ask, "Why do your forums load so fast?".. as if that's some amazing feat hehe.

It's because I built them myself.

But that is not to say that this forum is 'incorrect'. Mine is just streamlined the way I want it to be. It has less bells and whistles right now too.

It's also got next to nothing for posts.. only a couple people have used it. Which is fine. My site is for video stuff, not massive forum communications.

In order to know other ways to speed up DP I'd have to have the kind of access that most webmasters only entrust to themselves and people they've known for a long time. Query structure, data structures and types, how relationships are achieved, nested queries.. yadda yadda lots of techy mumbo jumbo.

Anything can be made faster than it is on the net. What is the 'ultimate in speed' today can become the 'turtle with three broken legs' tommorrow. It's all dependant on how upgradeable the systems are in real-time, without having to take the whole site down to do an 'upgrade'.

I hope my previously posted information will be taken as either 'reference material' or 'friendly suggestions' and not critisism. As I said, there's nothing really 'wrong' with DP.. just a couple things that could be changed - which would cause no difference in how the site looks/feels/displays - that would speed things up immensely.

Often, when I load a page here, I see the 'gold' banner at the top while the rest of the page remains white.. sometimes for many minutes at a time.
That tells me the site is working - but I'm 'waiting' for something to load up.

9 times out of 10 that 'wait' is due to some image, script or other application that is being brought in from another site - and that other site is slow.

Ok.. enough said. I dont want to end up writing a novel here (which I usually do when I get to talking about internet engineering).

Kudos!

This is a private site

Go and buy a new server for Michael or send him a check for $3000 is what he needs for improvements. I rememeber the time I was at my sister and Brother in law's home and their faucet was leaking and I said rudely George what the hell is with your faucet and he replied if you don't like it fix it yourself.

$3000 for improvements??

$3000 for improvements?? are you serious? I don't know how much you THINK a top notch dedicated server costs, but it's nowhere in the neighborhood of $3000. Little things like upgrading the hardware (i.e. Ram, CPU, etc) will make a huge difference in the speed of this site. As it is right now, it clearly cannot handle the amount of traffic it is receiving. Something tells me this site is on a shared server with other sites. If it is, shame on the site owner for not moving it over to a dedicated sooner. If it is on a dedicated, then it is in desperate need of an upgrade.

Go with the latter Truthy...

and everyone who "offers suggestions" in this manner should dump DailyPaul.

The site would then be filled with useful, positive, pro-active posts.

Maybe you can make a better one

Be thankful, not spoiled. This site has being great for a long time, and just because they are having some problems lately doesn't give us the right to bash them. If you don't come with a solution don't be destructive.

A little less insult and a lot more constructive criticism, please.
Perhaps you might want to rewrite this.

Truthy, I imagine Michael would be happy to accept your check to buy more band-width.

YES SIR!

Thanks for the orders sir!

My suggestions as a web designer

There's got to be a way to optimize the SQL queries particularly on the index. Using LEFT or INNER JOIN queries? There are tons of thing that could be done better including the design.

There IS a maximum allotment for concurrent queries using PHP. If the site is going down then it is possible that SQL is working itself to death (crashing which causes timeouts every 2 minutes). Also poor PHP coding can put the site in an infinite loop which will timeout and crash every 2 minutes. I know. I've done it on accident many times though that's not what is happening here. SQL crashing maybe but not PHP.

What I would like to see done:
1) Get rid of the who's online block. Kills loading times and doesn't serve this site well since of the amount of users.

2) Put most recent posts center stage above the news articles. Limit it to 10 most recent which will force people to actually go to the forums instead of beating the index refresh button to death like i know most do.

3) Move the index banners to either far left or far right of the site.

4) Make the site 100% width instead of fixed width. I hate not using my 1280 real estate.

5) Definitely needs a new site header graphic. Something nicer like on the official ronpaul2008.com site

6) xhtml compliance would also go a long way to speeding up the site since it's got some insane traffic.

7) remove recent blog posts and replace only with recent blog comments.

8) switch to a better provider that can aptly handle the increasing traffic. I doubt you'd have issue with finding people to chipin for that. ;)

There are a LOT of things that could be improved upon that would actually speed up the site, lower bandwidth consumption, and improve visibility. I am a web designer and am offering tips to the webmaster of this site. I do not want to participate in doing any of the work unless asked to but I do have a good understanding of web coding and hope my suggestions can help improve the functionality of the site and concerns of the many many users (including me). :)

Wow I Love "techies'"

I don't have a clue about what you are talking about, wish I did but why don't we send these suggestions to the web site owner and see how much the changes would cost if anything. I really appreciate this site so I would chip in.

See, Truthy??

This is an intelligent and polite way to suggest modifications to improve the site for us users. You should try it.

Forgive me,

But you are a real arrogant a*hole for posting this. If it's so bad, why don't you start a forum of your own? Prick.

LOL I second that!

America leading by example.

Go somewhere else OR

Create you own! Manystrom has already addressed the issue and the faithful here chipped in money toward a new server.

Thank You

for showing your general ignorance.

In case you didn't realize how the internet works, websites tend to slow down when they get more traffic.

Since the Ron Paul Revolution is picking up speed this site is getting hammered especially on donation days.

There isn't anything wrong with the site, it's the allowed bandwidth that's maxed out.

Think before you smack talk the owner of the site.

all-knowing one....

wrong wrong and wrong again.
2 points...I have checked the number of users when it happens. it has happened at less than 500 as well as higher numbers. secondly, why not have the "allowed bandwidth"?
