Lincoln is a funny character and not that simplistic, pre and during the Civil War he was a very bad guy, but the carnage of the Civil War caused him to seek God, and he did a lot of things post Civil War to try to make up for it. Shrugs..

It's totally ironic that Lincoln was the first "Republican" President; he destroyed the Republic, and created a centralized State. He created the first military draft (enslaving "free" men while emancipating the slaves, more irony) and first introduced an income tax to pay for his war of agression against the South. This is just my opinion, but it is one shared by many Americans, especially in the south.
The Gettysburg address was quite hypocritical since it was the southern soldiers that were fighting for self determination and government by the people. The north was fighting for Federal control of everything which is why we have centralized control today. I've often thought that God held his nose and chose the lesser of two evils between human slavery and federal slavery. Now, we need to defeat federal slavery.

Lincoln suspended habeus corpus, imprisoned newspaper editors who wrote against the war, imposed the first imcome tax, and sent the military to MD to prevent their legislature from meeting and voting on secession. All of this was done in the northern states. So, George Bush is taking a page from history and imposing the same types of unconstitutional restraints on our freedom today in the name of the war on "Terrorism", a tactic, not a country.
