Even in a hyperinflation, I'm sure that there would be many people willing to buy your silver or gold for cash --- which you would have to go right out and spend that day, before it lost its value. This is how it was in many of the Latin American hyperinflations of the last fifty years. Now, some people argue that due to the unique position of the dollar as de facto world currency, it might not just suffer hyperinflation, but undergo an overnight crash --- to zero value. In that case (which I know of no parallel in history), we're all screwed I think, because the whole economy would lock up instantly. Better have lots of food on hand in that case!
Frankly, I think if it came to having to try to barter silver and gold for food, people would be so monstrously desperate that we'd be living in a Mad MAx world at that point, at least for a little while. That scenario (total dollar collapse) would be, economically, uncharted waters.

for me, i have been reading and learning, and there is much info on a possible economic disaster.
cash will have little buying power and silver would hold its value. i want to keep my buying power. so i buy silver. disaster hits. i now need to buy food to eat. so i need to use my siliver to purchase that food. how do i go about doing this. are sellers going to take silver?
maybe what you guys are talking about is that this is only for people that have extra money and use silver as an investment.
